To be fair, Zoro handled his cursed sword better.

Both the highs and lows (in emotional sense) of Gintama are just something you can get nowhere else. The perverted stalker, mayo freak and sadist wanting to off his vice-commander and the 3 goofballs of Yorozuya just seamlessly having these kind of arcs, it's incredible.

It’s crazy how I barely cared for Ito until the episode before his death, and his death _still_ nearly made me cry. What the fuck, Gintama? How are you gonna keep doing this to me?

And SPOILER ALERT: It gets worse.

This arc was actually made into a movie, but it was the second live action Gintama movie. They made a few changes to the plot and added some action scenes and it was actually very good.

Agreed. They refined how the Ito plot and the cursed sword plot better. Even in the 1st live action Benizakura movie. During the 1st reveal of Benizakura, I like the part where Oguri Shun forced Nizou's blade towards a non-fatal spot on his side. In the anime series and movie, Nizou deliberately stabs Gin on the side.

This intro actually lead me to discover DOES and I honestly love their music so much!

The best part is the arcs just keep getting better

This arc was made into the 2nd Gintama live action movie and it was really good, you should check it out sometime

Really nice to see how much you enjoyed this arc. Every serious arc in gintama pretty much one ups the last one I daresay.

I just noticed that a few scenes seem to be changed from the versions I've watched. For example, no blood on Sogo's sword at 1:07:33. Might be a good idea to look into it, unless of course you don't mind changes like that.
