Blichmann Engineering RipTide Brewing Pump vs Chugger Pump Review: Why I Switched

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I recently replaced my Chugger Pump with a Blichmann Engineering RipTide and am SO glad I did. See why I switched and my review of both pumps! It pairs VERY well with the Spike Brewing Solo (eBIAB) system.

@@ShortCircuitedBrewers I bought two RipTides and one of them made a terrible screeching sound. Blichmann sent me a new motor and didnt even require me to send the bad motor back. These RipTides are amazing and well worth the money. They truly are quiet as a mouse as well

Great video! I just sent you a message via Instagram showing how to add a Tee so the purging does not make a mess. Yes, it requires an additional part (kinda like what you did with the Chugger) so your review is still very true. Simply trying to be helpful since you are so very helpful to the homebrewing community. Cheers!

Great comparison video! I completely agree about the built in bleed valve - great in theory but it makes a mess of hot wort every time. Other than that I love my Riptide! I’m planning on adding a check valve like you had on the chugger for a cleaner air bleed solution.

100% agree with you Larry, the RipTide is hands down the best pump I’ve ever used. You forgot to mention that the RipTide also come with a built in flow valve vs. the chugger that requires our to buy one separately.

It appears?? that in your video the new Riptide pump has a magnetic drive. This is a nice feature as there is typically one easily replaceable "O" Ring for the shaft seal. It also isolates the electrical pump motor from the fluid pump. Also, if you have any type of a clog in your pump it will just slip until you unclog it and not burn up your motor.

I have been brewing using gravity and considered adding a pump being a hobbyist myself (aka frugal brewer) I looked at the MKII w/stainless head. The reliability of the product is a key factor in making a purchase decision.. Because on brew day if the pump fails you are kicking yourself and suddenly more than willing to pay extra for it ..

Larry, will the bleeder valve unscrew? Can you modify it in the same way you did the chugger with a small ball valve and a hose? I know.. added cost but could solve a problem for someone. Just a thought.

Interesting. A few months ago, I decided to upgrade my pumping system from a Chugger pump which was working ok. After 4 brews, the Riptide started to make a high pitch noise with high vibration and stopped pumping. The magnetic coupling is not working well. As a result, I went back to my Chugger pump.

I wonder if you just got a bad pump. I have two of them with a 2bbl brewing system and they run for hours per session and only make noise if they lose prime. If it is not too late, I would return it for a replacement.

If I was buying a pump now, I'd buy the Riptide. But I can't see the upside to replace my Chugger.. it's performed flawlessly, (aside from the occasional cavitation). I've added a small valve to bleed air and the Blichmann linear valve to my Chugger before the Riptide was on the market. Yes, it's a little loud, but I'm very used to it, and it's not as loud as my exhaust fan.

oh, and sure there are 8 phillips screws to remove, and it's a bit more difficult than a tri clamp, but It's never taken more than a minute to break down the chugger.

@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY Very True. But in my case I've had mine for a lot of years, usually break it down after every brew. I haven't even had one of the screws show any sign of head wear at this point. Either way, great video.. I can't disagree, with the pros for the Riptide.. but still love my Chugger.

Putting valves on the input side of the pump is a mistake. Aside from the minimal noise as it relates to streaming video, I get it. Running clean water after each brew and once a year disassembly cleaning has yielded me many years of perfect functionality. Never has a single problem. If the pump is below the output of the kettle, as is yours, it primes itself. I have none of the problems you experience.
