BLENDER on the NEW M1 Pro MacBook (CPU, GPU, RAM Usage)

Ғылым және технология

Blender running on the new 2021 M1 Pro MacBook is as smooth as butter... twice as fast as the 2020 M1 MacBook Pro in fact! In this video we go through some testing, including EEVEE, Cycles, CPU, RAM, and GPU usage and also fan noise, and thermal performance.

just quick note that cycles renderer can render utilizing both CPU and GPU, we're currently only have CPU support (no metal support) even on Apple silicon version of Blender. GPU render will be supported on Blender version 3.1. Im excited to see how well it will perform.

@asiri maduranga Benchmarks put them being very comparable to Nvidia 3080 laptop cards. High power 3080s at 160~W are still faster, but most laptops are in the 100-130W range and neck and neck to the M1 Max 32 core, which uses much less power and can maintain that performance on battery. You'll pry my desktop from my cold, dead hands, but the new Macbooks are head and shoulders above other things on the market right now.

Thanks a lot for doing these tests with Blender! It would be really interesting too see these tests compared with a model that uses 32 GB RAM. Will Blender then still use about 13 GB? Or will it use more, because there's much more RAM available? In case it will use more RAM on a 32 GB RAM model, does that improve the performance a lot? As others I already said, it would also be interesting to re-do the tests when Blender supports Metal, which is planned for Blender 3.1.

Question for Blender pros. I'm a concept artist, most of the time I use photoshop and some zbrush and I'll start using Blender shortly. I'll be getting a 14" MBP, I was thinking to upgrade its RAM to 32, would that be helpful for using the programs or I'm good with 16 GB of RAM?

I don't really get the comparison to the 13" M1 Macbook Pro. Like, of course this is going to be better, but I don't think people serious about 3D modeling and rendering in Blender are going to be coming from a 13" MBP. Maybe compare it to the 2020 16" MBP with Intel i9 and AMD 5600M? A lot of 3D artists use that model for mobile work.

I've never owned an Apple product before so this MacBook Pro M1 was a risky buy for me. I was unaware that trackpad support for windows laptops is non-existant which is odd because the moment i used the macbook for blender it just works and feels amazing using the trackpad (not as good as a mouse but its good for working on the fly). There is a patch currently to add support for trackpad gestures for windows (D7660 GHOST: Add support for precision touchpad gestures on Windows) which i beleive is JUST now being implimented into blender 2 years later..

@@batmanonholiday4477 You need to consider forum factor, heat, etc. I'd like to point out an issue with the new M1 MacBook pro. The screen is so fucking close to the keyboard when it shuts that anything on the keyboard will be permanently stuck in the screen. Take that warning if you do buy one. You need to enable metal under the rendering device as well. I haven't done any high poly modeling I'm sure that would be fine in solid mode but material preview is of course a struggle depending on the size of the viewport and resolution of it. Sorry I wish I could compare it to a system with 3080 but I don't have one ATM.. blender 3.3.0 has trackpad support for windows (tested with magic trackpad 2) and it works exactly the same as Mac os. I've never worked on heavy scenes so 16gb has always been plenty for me but if you work on scenes with lots of textures etc more ram is better.

@@Nyubug cheers mate, i know that issue with the screen in other laptops, it has always infuriated me because over time the keyboard impresses itself and damages the screen, only solution for me has been to put a microfibre napkin between the two to soften the pressure. @@batmanonholiday4477 Yep makes me mad i paid good money for this laptop just to get stuff stuck in the screen, and I'm not about to dish out a bunch of money for a screen replacement over a little dot stuck in my screen... Even the key-caps leave marks on the screen when you shut the laptop you mentioned a microfiber napkin maybe ill buy one but im afraid it will damage the screen because of how small the tolerance is.. BTW I just found out rn that the magic trackpad 2 on windows blender 3.3.0 can't right click drag.... Which is a bummer because that's used for Lazy Connect and a lot more shortcuts in the node editors.. let me know if that works on the windows laptop if it even has double press right click.
