    Just a small tip regarding units, if you frequently export between different softwares that use different units, like mm, you can just go to Scene Menu > Units > Length and change Meters to Millimeters. That will make 1 Blender Unit (basically the size of the grid squares you see in viewport) equals 1 mm and then importing would be hassle free without needing to worry about scaling issues. Also, if you want to scale something to the same size in all the three axes, instead of doing it individually in all the three XYZ sliders, just drag your mouse down across the sliders and you'll be able to change all three values to a new one at the same time!

    Firstly wanted to say thanks for creating these really well put together and detailed tutorials . They offer such a good guide. I watched all your videos and kept coming back to them as a guide as I was in the process of learning Blender. Keep up the good word. I have put a link to your channel in my latest video description, hope thats cool with you. Thanks again and Happy New Year.

    I want to start learning using alias . Could you tell me about workflow? My idea is to use alias, 3dsmax for materials and then to UE4 to actually use the model to drive with in VR , is this a good way to go or is there a better workflow ?

    I tried importing my alias file. But seems like its getting really heavy. Like in wire file is 30 mb and obj goes to 500mb.and some components are going out of place or some stuff doesnt seem to be thete.after the import. Not sure why.. please help. Love your content though and tutorials. Appreciate it man. Thanks

    I'm working with Alias for over 25 years and I loved it in the beginning. Now that I started using Blender it suddenly becomes apparent to me how bad and outdated in many ways Alias actually is. (Ancient render engine, inconsistent UI, broken history, and so much more...) It's really a shame that (among others) it is still not able to convert NURBS to quads with proper topology. I love to use Blender for visualization especially with Cycles on an RTX card but because of the miserable topology of the imported triangles, you can't do anything else with the imported model. Modifiers which change the form (like bevel or solidify) don't work because the topology is so bad. I really hope that one day Blender will provide the NURBS toolset what Alias has and then finally we can ditch that super expensive and badly maintained software. It's amazing how much improvement came into Blender in just the last 12 months. It's definitely the future and I hope that the development team will keep up their splendid work.

    Don´t forget: Alias still is magic! Polytools like Blender are magic for visualisation, I agree! But when you need surfaces for milling, engineers... try out AliasSubD Limit Surfaces and you will like Alias again Steve ;-)

    @@TheSTROHM Hi Stefan!😊 I tested the SubD in Alias the last two months but compared to the SubD tools in Blender I had very mixed emotions. I'm using Blender for building precise parts for 3D printing and I love it. Creating proximity loops in Alias is a pain as you have far less possibilities to manipulate individual edges as in Blender. Keeping a proper topology is also much more problematic. The Catmull-Clark implementation in Alias folds in concave corners badly. It's great that you can mix SubD with Nurbs but only if you do simple objects (large exterior surfaces) with it. I built up headlight parts and that was a pain. Trimming those underlying Nurbs is a nightmare and if you change the projecting curves (which is the point of quick SubD modelling) your trimming messes up. Please don't misunderstand me, I still like to use Alias but when I see the development speed of Blender compared to the decades long struggle of Alias, I can only shake my head... 20 years ago Guido, Marco and me sent pages of feature request to Sriram after he visited us here... some of those requests would still apply today... It's great that recently something started to happen but there needs to be MUCH more development...

    Hi HandleBar3D, I started learning Alias with your videos for personnal projects but I have a specific question : how to properly add thickness to a complex surface (like the back body part of your car in this video) ? thanks :)

  • @HandleBar3D

    @HandleBar3D

    5 жыл бұрын

    Sylvain Klein you use object edit- offset, and you offset the surfaces, than you add a draft depending on your angles and tolerances. It’s super slow in Alias, most thickness operations happen with other software, inside a car studio that is.

  • @SylvainKlein

    @SylvainKlein

    @@HandleBar3D Thanks ! I tried a few time to use the offset tool but when surfaces create very close angle it doesn't work very well and fail most of the time I tried... But maybe it's juste my lack of knowledge. In which other software do they usually add the thickness ? (I tried in Fusion 360 and it doesn't work, the surfaces is to complex for him very quickly)

    Very useful, thanks! Have you encountered issues with surfaces normals vs surface orientation when importing to Blender? I spent the last few hours trying to figure out how to manage this. It appears Blender has no idea 'surface orientation' is a thing the way it is in Alias. But it affects the shading dramatically (as in: it's sh*t). I know this is a lot to ask: if you have the knowledge and time, I would love a video exploring this topic. Huge thanks either way, keep on rocking!

  • @HandleBar3D

    @HandleBar3D

    Surface orientation is a system made in Alia’s to help import into its autodesk render software called vred. Blender and any other 3d software will only read the normal not the orientation. So you have to flip them to make sure all the blue are outside and red inside. The yellow one is just for autodesk workflow.

    Hello, when we take file from alias to blender, we convert it into Obi. Or fbx,right. My dout was, do we have to convert each and every layer into obj or fbx? Or Can we convert entier file at once in obj or fbx? For example i have more than 20 layers which i want to render it, so do i need to convert the layer individually or at once i can convert entire file in obj or fbx?

  • @HandleBar3D

    Manthan Mhaske you can convert the entire file just select all the objects. You will probably have to do a lot of organizing afterwards inside of blender.

    For the purpose of visualization you can model a car in Blender no problem at all! But it is not industry standard nurbs based build so for work in a company it would not work.
