Tutorial: My New Rigging Workflow in Blender
Фильм және анимация
In this tutorial we'll be rigging two different things! One is a six legged creature, and the other is a hand. We'll be using Inverse Kinematics and a workflow where we make the rig first, and then add the parts later!

Finally a good rig tutorial that isnt just "use mine in the description" or "just use rigify (or other program/site etc.) to spawn in a premade rig!". Thank you dude!

FINALLY! I'm 60+. 3D art is still in its infancy to me. Working from the costumes to the bones is absolutely an alien concept. I've always started drawing with the bones for positioning, implying muscles, then working on the skin and clothing. Thank you for showing me that rigging the animal, or human first CAN be done. I'm crying happy tears right now.😂
If you uncheck “lock object modes” under the edit pull down, you won’t have to switch back and forth between object and pose for parenting. Saves a lot of time and movement when there’s a lot to bind for anyone that didn’t know.

There should be a "public gallery of essential Blender tutorials". This one definitely would be!
I recommend working on one side and adding _L or .L at the end of each bone or R if you're working on the right side and then when all of them are finished select all, right click and select symmetrize. It'll save you a lot of time.
@simply_the_dev7588

I've seen other videos that do the same with the .L naming convention. Also what's the difference when parenting bone vs bone with weights?
@LANGIMATION
Жыл бұрын
@@simply_the_dev7588 parenting to bone is best for mechanical rigging and for solid objects like armor and to snap weapons and gear to certain parts of the body like the wasit or in hand while weights is more used for organic models like monsters and people

you are singlehandedly teaching me every more advanced idea or concept in blender, and completely causeing me to reapproach how I do mostly everything.
I've never seen someone explaining so smooth with so good creature designs. Amazing work ❤

I've been using your Mechanical Creatures pack nonstop for the past week. It's so much fun!!! This new speedy tutorial is amazing. Thank you!
Just something I noticed at the start, when you're doing the bones on each side, you can just make one side and then use the symmeturies operation. This also symmeturieses the constraints and stuff
@jakehero4
Жыл бұрын
Yea symmetrize saves a lot of time instead of making it all over again for the other side
@Polyfjord

Ooohhh nice!! I always thought that was limited to humanoid rigs!! Will try it 👍
@umoyGC
Жыл бұрын
But keep in mind to name all the bones with "*.L" (or "*.R" depends on the side :) ) before symmetrize. This will keep it organized ;) symmetrize will name it with the other side index :)
@sakariheinonen5252
Жыл бұрын
Perfect! Bear in mind that symmetrize seems to only work in the x-axis.
@SakuraWitch
Жыл бұрын
@@sakariheinonen5252 its best to think of it like directions x axis is left and right y axis is forward and backwards z axis is up and down a reason why the x axis gets mirrored is if you think of human anatomy, its your left and right side that looks the same otherwise it be kinda weird to have a face on your backside or another butt on your front side

I love your sound effects choices for your projects
Thanks for this! I've been using Unity for about 8 years and animation has always been the death of my projects. Tutorials like this are making it so easy to just suck it up and "jump in" to learn it!
I have been teaching myself Blender for only a few months, but I am very good at learning visually. Even though you don't cover every little button you press, your tutorials just make sense to me. Thank you for these videos! I just downloaded the free version of your mechanical parts, but as soon as I make some money I'm definitely going to be getting the paid version. I really want to support you and what you do. Big thanks from a poor artist. #hearthands
Love the creations you make with this method, they look so real and delicate.
Really the best rigging tutorial I Have ever seen so far!
Your tutorials are SO good! I know there are so many other tutorials out there, but the way you explain is just BLISS! Keep bringing more animation tutorials please! Thank you!
You have one of the best content in 3d and Blender, thanks for the tutorial, I'm learning rigging and this is very helpful for me.
I can't even remember if i have ever seen such high quality tutorials. They are simply awesome.
Your tutorials are always quite excellent. Whenever I get a KZread notification that you have a new video, I immediately drop whatever I’m doing (which can have unpredictable results) and view it. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, time, and effort to help complete strangers get better. EDIT: if you’re ever in Kansas, drop by!
This is an EPIC tutorial! Thank you Polyfjord!
I love the reverse workflow starting with the rig and then modeling around the bones, it is a great approach to creating unique creatures, gotta give it a try! Great video and keep up the great work!
Thank you so much! This is literally what I have been waiting for, since you teased your kit!
Great enthusiasm. Very motivating tutorial. Thanks for taking the time.
Wow! Your channel and its contents are getting better and better every day! Amazing work!!!
Best blender rigging tutorial on youtube😁
I randomly figured out a lot of this stuff after rigging a industrial robot arm, like the ones they have on car factories. Awesome that you share this to other people. It is as you said, it seems a bit like a backwards workflow.
Thanks! This was just the reminder/refresher I needed for my current project at work. I did something entirely different with my rig, but your explanations were so easy to understand that it was just enough to apply for what I'm working on 😄 Husqvarna wanted me to do a showcase of a power cutter and the model I'm working on has an arm extension that can grip onto rails. I needed the arm to rotate in one axis while holding still onto a rail as the power cutter is moving, and your explanation of how to do the IK rigging reminded me of how I could achieve that 👍
Wow that's an amazing workflow ... I can't wait to try it.
You're incredibly talented and I feel blessed that you're giving us these amazing tutorials. I definitely intend on using this workflow for making gauntlets in armour sets for game-ready assets - Previously I've been modelling the finger sections in rest-position, and it can be really frustrating to get that right, and there's always a bit of deformities. Instead, if I model them and parent to an armature, I can change them to their final rest position after the modelling phase, and avoid the guess work involved. Thank you so much for this again! I've only recently discovered your channel and your videos are incredible, insanely well edited for time, and really informative.
Loved that mounted camera angle on the hand!!!
@polyfjord: generous artists like you are the best part of KZread: really useful information for free. Thanks a ton for your generosity and kindness!

Loving the tutorials, these are some of the best i have come across.👍
Clear, excellent explanation. Very much appreciated! Thank you.
wow, this is simply amazing!!! your tutorials are so clear and easy to follow!!! thanks a lot!!
One thing you can do that might speed things up even more: instead of axis locking, set up pole targets in the IK Constraint. The IK constraint will arc the IK chain in the direction of the pole target more or less automatically.
@Voreoptera
Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. For the objects he is creating locking constraints makes more sense because there is locked movement in the joints. For other things pole targets would be better then locking. Also if he used pole targets then there may be small movement in unwanted directions.
Great tutorial video, Thank you!!!
i like how you get straight to the point, and make a good cut betweens explanation straightforward. subs!!!!
I love the cinematic renders and sound design! It works great where you put them in the video. The sound takes what could otherwise be creepy and makes it playful. Ok, maybe it's still creepy. Nice work!

Do realize how much you look like a younger Ewan McGregor? All kidding aside, your explanation of the rigging an object in Blender 3.3 is amazing. You sped through the section on parenting the bones to the actual mesh, so I had to rewind that section at least 10 times. Other than that, you are a great facilitator. Keep up the great work.

Hey man. Just wanted to say thank you so much for your excellent YT tutorials. I’m 20+ years as a freelance 2D/3D animator, but relatively new to Blender (a couple of years), and all your tuts are a HUGE help! I make AE tuts on my own channel, so I’m painfully aware how much time and patience it takes. Much appreciated and more power to you sir! ✌️
