Bleaching Fabrics - How Much Bleach to Use?

Ғылым және технология

This week I investigate color fading with varying concentrations of bleach. If you're trying to figure out how much bleach to use to achieve a specific amount of fade, this simple experiment could help you figure it out! I used different solutions of bleach and water and tested four different fabrics to see how the color changed. Some fabrics interact with bleach more than others, and I was able to determine fabric / bleach combinations to get the results I am looking for. A simple experiment for basic understanding! (HA! Bleach is a base!) The best part of this experiment is that you can do it at home and tweak it to meet your needs! Thanks for watching!

    Synthetic fabrics must be heated up for them to take dyes or for bleach to strip their color. Putting your fabric in hot water and then adding bleach can work but be careful and follow a tutorial. LaurDIY has a good one.

    Important points not mentioned: 1. The bleaching process will continue until you remove it, or neutralize it. Bleach is usually sodium hypochlorite. 2. Rinsing in large amounts of water will remove it. Inexpensive but slow at stopping it. 3. Hydrogen peroxide will neutralize sodium hypochlorite. It is fast and safe, and the byproducts are harmless. (4. >>>Do NOT use vinegar as a neutralizer. It will turn into hypochlorous acid and then potentially chlorine gas.

    The blue and off-white were linens, and the brownish was a synthetic, like the stuff a suit lining or vest is made of. The other (grayish) fabric I don’t recall the composition, but I believe it was a synthetic blend of some sort. Hope that helps! Can’t believe I didn’t mention that in the video. • @Encephalitisify
    @Encephalitisify8 ай бұрын

    This doesn’t matter in the least for the outcome, but I must insert my geek into this. Your concentrations aren’t really correct IF you did as you said and just added the bleach to 100 ml. You have to subtract the amount of water for the bleach you put in. So if you put in 5 ml of bleach, you would use 95 ml of water. The equation we use in chemistry is C1 x V1 = C2 x V2 where C = concentration and V equals volume. Also, The bleach straight from the bottle isn’t 100% bleach. Most bleach is about 7.5% bleach, so it’s important to look on the bottle and get the concentration, then use to the equation to know the exact concentration of bleach. Your solutions are probably around 1% to 5% bleach.

    Can I change the color of a bright red sweatshirt to a light pink color. How could I make it look faded?

    Absolutely! You can always drizzle the solution onto the sweatshirt (which gives me an idea for a video...) rather than soaking it to give it a different look. Using bleach to remove the color will give a faded look for your sweatshirt!

    I tried bleach/water 50/50 on synthetic fleece and after a couple hours I saw no change at all.

    Unfortunately bleach tends to turn reds to pinks, so I don’t think you could achieve orange...

    I’ve never worked with powdered bleach... I would likely make solutions of varying concentration by using different amounts of the powder. You’d want to reference the packaging or do a google search for how to prepare the bleach and adjust from there. Hope that helps?
