Bleaching Fabrics - How Much Bleach to Use?
Ғылым және технология
This week I investigate color fading with varying concentrations of bleach. If you're trying to figure out how much bleach to use to achieve a specific amount of fade, this simple experiment could help you figure it out! I used different solutions of bleach and water and tested four different fabrics to see how the color changed. Some fabrics interact with bleach more than others, and I was able to determine fabric / bleach combinations to get the results I am looking for. A simple experiment for basic understanding! (HA! Bleach is a base!) The best part of this experiment is that you can do it at home and tweak it to meet your needs! Thanks for watching!

Synthetic fabrics must be heated up for them to take dyes or for bleach to strip their color. Putting your fabric in hot water and then adding bleach can work but be careful and follow a tutorial. LaurDIY has a good one.

Important points not mentioned: 1. The bleaching process will continue until you remove it, or neutralize it. Bleach is usually sodium hypochlorite. 2. Rinsing in large amounts of water will remove it. Inexpensive but slow at stopping it. 3. Hydrogen peroxide will neutralize sodium hypochlorite. It is fast and safe, and the byproducts are harmless. (4. >>>Do NOT use vinegar as a neutralizer. It will turn into hypochlorous acid and then potentially chlorine gas.

I’m making a Ghostbusters 2 cosplay and the uniforms are a charcoal grey, but the flight suits in the brand I use don’t come in grey, just in black. I have been searching everywhere for how to safely and carefully fade my flight suit to a more charcoal color!
Well, that explains why my bleach-dyed t-shirt worked in minutes, while my synthetic hoodies are only lightly faded after an hour...thanks!

Ok-great informative video....just one thing missing as far as I can tell.....what TYPE of fabrics did you use? It very much makes a difference if it is a synthetic fabric vs. natural fabric. Do you know or remember what types of fabric they were?
@TheSciencePirate

The blue and off-white were linens, and the brownish was a synthetic, like the stuff a suit lining or vest is made of. The other (grayish) fabric I don’t recall the composition, but I believe it was a synthetic blend of some sort. Hope that helps! Can’t believe I didn’t mention that in the video. @TheSciencePirate
4 жыл бұрын
I can’t recall exactly how long, but I would say approximately 2-4 minutes... maybe 5 minutes at the most. Looking at the results, most of those fabrics certainly would have benefitted from a longer soak. I have a couple other “bleaching fabrics” video ideas and hope to get them published soon. Thanks for watching!

Just Fyi: A tea soak can age fabrics in a Natural way and smells much better than bleach. What I can't Seen to find an answer to is: how Long to soak fabrics in bleach and how to neutralize it, without putting too much again in the fabric... Great Video though, i didn't expect the synthetic fabrics to be so extremely resistent. 😮
Not sure why... maybe it's the editing of the video or something...but I'm lost! lol
can i use bleach for drawing on a viscose shirt?
This doesn’t matter in the least for the outcome, but I must insert my geek into this. Your concentrations aren’t really correct IF you did as you said and just added the bleach to 100 ml. You have to subtract the amount of water for the bleach you put in. So if you put in 5 ml of bleach, you would use 95 ml of water. The equation we use in chemistry is C1 x V1 = C2 x V2 where C = concentration and V equals volume. Also, The bleach straight from the bottle isn’t 100% bleach. Most bleach is about 7.5% bleach, so it’s important to look on the bottle and get the concentration, then use to the equation to know the exact concentration of bleach. Your solutions are probably around 1% to 5% bleach.
I used bleach but the fabric was red. at what rate should it be mixed with water to make the fabric white rather than red? My fabric is denim

Hey! I have a question about bleaching some 100% cotton twill dickies carpenter pants that are a light brown.( the classic carhartt color) I’m trying to turn them like a cream/off white color. Will bleach do the job?
@eartherinfire

Cotton will bleach. If there is any poly, that’s questionable and you might get really inconsistent effects.
is there anyway to bleach polyester?
Are the different molecular structures of bleaches. That would be weird if this is one of the only things in the planet that doesn't have different structures. But other than that you could add additives or synthesis it to alter it to change how they act . right? that's how everything works?
hey cool video, i got a White jacket like polyester or something plastic like all these days. and the black nylon inner lining of the jacket turned orange and discolored the white outside. to a spotty orangy ish, looks stupid... what do you think will work to get the outside white again? i tried baking soda, doesnt touch it!.. Thanks!
@TheSciencePirate
2 жыл бұрын
A weak bleach solution should restore the whiteness of the jacket. You can paint it on or spray on with a squirt bottle.

Bleach destroys Lycra/Spandex. But if you’re determined to try, get a pair of thrifted jeans with the exact same fiber composition and do the same bleaching experiments as in the video. You could get some bleaching with minimal elastomeric destruction .
Can I bleach a pink dress?? Will it come out white??
@TheSciencePirate

That depends on what type of fabric the dress is made from. Synthetic fabrics are more difficult to remove color from using bleach. Ultimately you would need to test it to find out what effect it would have on the dress.
Can I change the color of a bright red sweatshirt to a light pink color. How could I make it look faded?
