❗️ Interesting: In 2009, Denis Mickiewicz invited all interested alumni to the Duke University campus where he taught, for a special concert and recording of challenging repertoire (today Denis Mickiewicz is Professor Emeritus of Russian Literature at Duke University). It was wonderful to all get together again and work with him. He's a very modest person, and most of his colleagues and neighbors at Duke University had never heard that he was such a gifted musician and had started a famous Chorus at Yale. Rehearsals lasted three days, and the afternoon included a performance at the famous Duke University Chapel. With some of his best voices and most experienced soloists on hand, the group did not disappoint an audience of mainly Duke students and staff. This year was Denis Mickiewicz's 80th birthday, which we celebrated with a fabulous banquet. The banquet was full of warm fellowship and loving tributes to the founding conductor and his family.

"Blazhen Muzh" (Blessed is the Man) is a chant of selected verses taken from the first and second psalms of the Psalter. The chant originated in the Kiev Cave Monastery, one of the oldest and most revered sites in Russian Orthodoxy.
This chant is sung during Sunday Vespers (both as part of the All-Night Vigil and separately). Each verse is followed by an Alleluia, and the chant concludes with a nine-fold Alleluia which includes the doxology (Glory to Thee, O God).
Christian theologians often use this image created by the prophet David, the image of two paths-the path of the righteous and the path of the sinner. The first gives a person true happiness, the second way deprives this happiness, and with it abolishes the meaning of life.

The Yale Russian Chorus is the oldest singing group in the New World dedicated to the music of Russia and nearby countries. The YRC was founded 1953 at the height of the Cold War. Founders: Denis Mickiewicz and George Litton.
Singers join while students at Yale, and many stay active throughout their lives. Every year or so we hold a major concert in which students and alumni sing together. Many alumni also join the students on tours to Russia.
Without a doubt, each of us had our own motivation to join the Russian choir. But we offer you a quote from one of the members of our choir, which unites us to some extent and explains a little the meaning of the choir in our lives: "Singing the music of the YRC in the style we sang it, was an antidote to the intellectualism that got many of us into Yale in the first place, but that could be so restrictive to the heart and spirit".
The singers are not Russians, or emigrants from Russia, but are students and former students who share a passion for the music and a belief in the power of music to build connections between people of different countries.

В 2009 году Денис Мицкевич пригласил всех заинтересованных выпускников в университетский городок Дьюка, где преподавал, на специальный концерт и запись сложного репертуара (сегодня Денис Мицкевич является почетным профессором русской литературы Дьюкского университета). Было замечательно снова собраться всем вместе и работать с ним. Он очень скромный человек, и большинство его коллег и соседей в университете Дьюка никогда не слышали о том, что он такой талантливый музыкант и основал знаменитый хор в Йеле. Репетиции продолжались три дня, и после обеда состоялось выступление в знаменитой часовне Дьюкского университета, построенной в 1930 году по проекту одного из первых успешных чернокожих архитекторов страны Джулиана Ф. Абеля в готическом стиле. Хоровая группа, в которую вошли лучшие голоса и самые опытные солисты, не разочаровала аудиторию, состоявшую в основном из студентов и сотрудников университета. Этот год был годом 80-летия Дениса Мицкевича, которое мы отметили потрясающим банкетом. Банкет был полон теплой дружеской атмосферы и добрых слов в адрес дирижера-основателя и его семьи.
