Blaze Reviews: My 125 Motocross Machines

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I get a lot of questions about what bikes I've liked what machines are worth buying and I thought it might be fun to do a little mini-review of all the machines I have owned. I have owned over 50 machines so I am going to divide these into three videos based on displacement size. This first video is going to cover all the 125cc machines I have owned. Parts 2 and 3 will cover my 250s and Open bikes.
This one is going to cover the 1987 Kawasaki KX125, 1987 Honda CR125R, 1988 Yamaha YZ125, 1989 Yamaha YZ125, 1990 Honda CR125R, 1996 Suzuki RM125, 1999 Honda CR125R, and 2008 KTM 125SX.

The death of mx is the phasing out of the 2-strokes.. I don't care if they make a light speed 4-stroke it's just not a motocross bike without that awesome 2-stroke sound.

Totally forgot about Doug Dubach! One of the old school greats. Always loved him and Jean Michel Bayle as my 500cc heroes. Such a throwback.

Fantastic information! I’m 51 years old and slowly restoring a 89 CR125. Just picked up an issue the same year Dirt Rider mag. So many memories of the 80’s and 90’s. Can’t wait for the video on your 250’s

I’m not a big guy, so maybe it’s all I ever needed, but 200cc bikes are magic for me. Especially in the woods, what a blast, like a 125 with more torque. Thanks again.

I'll never forget hopping off my 85yz 250 and onto my brand new 86 cr125. That cr was absolutely perfect out of the box. The forks were a tiny bit soft but for out of the crate those 86 CRs were the best ever up to that point anyway and the near future after that. I switched to road racing so stopped racing mx in 88 but still rode occasionally for fun on borrowed bikes. The 87 cr500 was fast and fun

Nice video, Tony. I have owned a lot of dirt bikes and dual-purpose bikes too, but only one 125 MXer: A 1983 Yamaha YZ125K. I bought it brand new as a leftover 1983 model in July of 1984, and if I recall the price was $1,699. I didn't race motocross with it but rode it for fun on trails and in sand and gravel banks with my riding buddies for two years, and I got along with it very well. It had the classic yellow/black colors, good suspension for my 150 pounds, handled well, and had plenty of midrange and top end power for me. Looking back, that YZ was a great bike for being 18 years old and having some great riding spots to use it.

Best 125's were from the 80's, why? Because that was the best decade of all time. Bikes were going in every direction as far as styling, performance, suspension etc. I had the 88 KX-125, and it was a blast race/ride! I think those KX's were just cool. CR's of the 80's were bullet proof, and just plain fast. Yammies were so-so, and you put-putted on Rm's. If you modded the latter with pipes and porting you could keep up with the red and green meanies, but they were still slow..

You’re dead right about the 90’s bikes. I started on a 92 cr125 which was so fast but just wanted to head shake everywhere. Then got a new 96rm 125. Still probably my favourite new bike I have ever had. But wired going from a top end motor to a bottom and mid of the rm. Then by chance got to race a 99 cr 125 in a championship for someone but was such a struggle against anything else. Handled good but just revved so slow. I used 1st gear more that year then the rest of the 27 years I have raced.

Boy, you said it concerning the Yam shifting in those days.....I compared it to trying to crush beer cans while barefoot. Seemed like Hondas fit everyone.....don't know how they consistently got the ergos correct. You could rev the CR Honda until only dogs could hear them....CR headshake increased church attendance in those days by about 500%.

@Tony Blazier Sir I raced at Antietam in that era , On a 87 YZ 125 and a 87 CR 80 , do you remember the expert class ... every weekend it came down to 2 riders , Todd Wolfe( Yamaha) and Mick Piteney( Suzuki) , Lord were they fast .. I raced my YZ 250 there and up Hanover as well as White Oak , but my question is about finding a decent truck to buy since your a car salesman ...... If you happen to see this Sir please reply :) Thank You

I've never had a legit 125. I went from a 1967 Kawasaki 120 enduro (in the early 2000s, lol) to an '82 Husqvarna 250. Honestly I think my old Husky is a lot like a modern 125; probably makes 30-something horses and VERY pipey for a 250. It can be ridden slow and easy, or flat-out and bloodthirsty. The engine really doesn't allow for anything in between.

What do you think about usd forks compared to conventional ?Those forks for my speed intermediate at best and old almost 50 now but it just seemed that conventional forks work better for some reason. At the time I had a 92 yz 250 with race tech fresh suspension and that rm had way better forks on the 96 come to think of it my 88 yz had better forks than my 98 kx 250.

  • @TheMotocrossVault

They offer advantages in certain situations. For average Joes the conventional fork offered a plusher feel but most people today would find them too flexy.

Ha ha! Honda CR headshake...Man oh man....Nothing like it especially when you're towards the end of a moto, arms pumped, and you start to decelerate down a long rough straight....Down right scary...My experience was with 91' and 92' CR125...That 92' CR was crazy fast....Had an 87' kx80...Really liked that bike but man reliability was horrible especially the bolts...Nothing like a floppy silencer..Couldn't stand that soft rubber transmission oil filler fastener either.
