Scenes of the Jupiter II being engulfed in flames are indelible in-mind and technically impressive.
More than 50 years have passed and that ship still looks impressive. None of the new versions are as interesting looking and so scifi.
The Jupiter 2 engines best spacecraft audio ever!
I still love it. Reminds me watching it with my parents, in the late 60’s. And what a spectacular soundtrack!
As the Jupiter 2 struggles to break free from the planet’s gravitational pull, Maureen sends Will and Smith upstairs to confess.😂 The special effects, the soundtrack and even their technical mumbo jumbo make for an intense scene. Fifty years after watching this, it still holds up!

Though now watching I wonder why Maureen just didn’t get back on the mic and tell John and Don what Smith just confessed rather than risk sending Will up with Smith as the ship is tumbling. 🤔

ANY TIME THE JUPITER 2 LIFTS OFF IS A THRILL FOR ME THAT SOUND OF POWER FROM THE ENGINES IS GREAT OF COURSE I DID GET A LITTLE NERVOUS FOR THE SHIP KNOWING WHAT SMITH DID WITH ONE OF THE PARTS TO THE SHIP ALMOST GETTING THEM ALL KILLED AND PEOPLE WONDER WHY MAJOR WEST GETS SO PISSED OFF AT SMITH MOST OF THE TIME 😡😡😡😠
Love looking at the ladies all strapped into their chairs and I love the effects with the Jupiter 2 taking off... Absolutely stellar even by today's standards

@@jeffanon1772I think it was because this was the first episode in color so they thought they weren't as flashy as their regular clothes were. Later in the second year they did wear them in one episode, and in the third year more often as people got used to the difference by then.
June Lockhart is such a quality actor just as she was in Lassie.
I wish they had had just one episode where Don laid out Dr. Smith like a rug...
When intensity came from acting not from AI.

I was thinking the same!
Always love the show. I own it on DVD
The fusion core lights are still rotating unevenly on the 4ft Jupiter 2, just as in episode 1, The Reluctant Stowaway as the Jupiter 2 lifted off from Earth. The grin on Angela's face is priceless,as Jonathan Harris lets out the Comical Scream, vs what he did when the Jupiter 2 lifted off from Earth.🤣
Apparently John learned alot about assisting in flying the ship after the crash in Season 1. Don did all of the piloting of the ship in early Season 1.
The special effects department had an accident in the Jupiter II blast off scenes. The Jupiter II caught fire! There are photos, in my library, where they had to get a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. The model was scorched and then repainted. These scenes were a little too hot!

Yes, I remember watching behind the scenes footage of that.
Love this episode as well
At 4:00 it looks like the Jupiter's atomic engine is about to fall off. I think the f/x guys bounced the Jupiter II model a bit too much.
Love this clip!
They should have tossed Smith out of the airlock in the first episode....! ! !

Bye Smith! 😀
Such terrific special effects all done with models!
I love how Don says "Firing 1 and 2" and he appears to push the "right" buttons, and the corresponding lights come on.
Will was funny when he told Dr. Smith you will have to explain that yourself. I don't know what a vagrant impulse means. For a spaceship that is supposed to be built out of titanium how could one of those exploding rocks puncture a hole into the side of the ship? Especially when it withstood a meteor storm in the past? 🤔
That poor HERO really took a beating through out the series.......Have seen a bth scene of this showing a small fire had caught in the front of the jupiter/gemini......
Dr. Smith looks like he is strapped in by a seat belt from a 65 Mustang...
Don should have made an executive decision to rid themselves of Smith long ago.
where was judy in this lift off?
Silver suits at the dry cleaners for this episode
Well-done escape sequence as the planet blows apart beneath them. The cause of the destruction of Preplanis should have been something more credible, rather than the uncontrolled mining efforts of some unbelievable space prospector. For example, the planet's unusual orbit taking it close to its sun may have eventually taken its toll.
I always wondered how the landing legs were extended on take-off when it was level with the ground.

Exactly what went through my mind as a kid....I'm 65 now 😊 and nothing changes....have it on DVD.
What happened to the glow-y business that enveloped the ship when it lifted off from Earth? Also, why didn't they toss Doctor Smith into a suspended animation tube at the first opportunity? For that matter, if it was necessary to be in suspension to reach Alpha Centauri when they originally set out, how were they planning to get there without using those freezing tubes once they resumed their journey?
@Selica76

In the first episode, Maureen had an adverse reaction to the suspended animation process which is most likely why the Robinsons never occupied the freezing tubes again. In the third episode, Don did force Dr. Smith into a freezing tube when the latter was showing dangerous behavior, but the Robot, following programming that Smith placed into him earlier, let the villainous saboteur out of the tube.

If no other, THIS is the piint at which I'd have thrown Smith out the main hatch, no freezing death in the airless vacuum of space, a fairly quick demise on the exploding surface below, so done with him
Dr. Smith: You, uh... you will bear me out, won't you, Will, when I tell them that I meant no harm? It was just, uh... It was just a vagrant impulse. Will: You have to explain that yourself. I don't know what a vagrant impulse means.

The series is available on Blu-ray with restored and remastered picture and audio. What you see here is remastered, but in standard definition not high definition (Blu-ray).
