►About the Game -
In the town center of Dim River, Henri wakes up in the middle of the night to a sudden and loud crash sound. A strange metal cabinet has fallen through the ceiling from the apartment above, effectively blocking his front door. The night life of the town goes on, oblivious to Henri's struggles as he tries to solve his predicament perhaps not completely on his own.
The night is going to be long and peculiar...
Blank Frame is a first person surreal horror game with a look akin to early 2000's pc/ps2 games and is accompanied by a strange and haunting soundtrack made by Hangman & Taraen (Gazers). The game is about an hour and a half on your first playthrough and is meant to be played in one sitting. The game contains two endings.
Gameplay is a combination of point and click games and walking simulators. However, it is possible to die in this game. If you die, you have to start from the beginning. Chances to die are rare and can be avoided fairly easily so deaths do not feel cheap.
Game focuses on atmosphere and story instead of constantly startling the player. Blank Frame is meant mainly for fans of slow paced surreal/psychological horror games.

Hey, creator of the game here. Great playthrough, can't believe you got the "good" ending on your first try. Game is on 60% sale right now, if anyone's interested. Also, working on new game currently, probably coming later this year. Again, thanks for playing and good video.

Considering she insists that you got out on your own and strangely asks if you're happy now... she might be a personification of your "hope". Yeah, this game is almost certainly an allegory for depression.

Noticed this character is either very bad at asking help, or he subconsciously does not want to leave his apartment despite the danger of being stuck. There were many chances and opportunites to get help or even escape himself, but something is holding him back. Even his neighbor Aava also points out he doesn't seem desperate enough to leave.

Honestly? People that struggle asking for help often feel they are not worth being helped. It may seem like the person is shy or quiet, a loner, etc, but all anyone really wants to feel is that they belong somewhere and that they matter to someone. If they feel they don't have those things, a person often wonders what the point of it all is. So when a person is struggling with their own self-worth combined with any other mental toxicity, the last thing they want to do is seek help from those around them. They don't want to be a bother because they already think they are one. There are many, many more people out there than we all realize that truly feel their life and themselves are worthless. It's why I try my best to be kind and respectful to anyone I meet. I'd rather be someone that puts a smile on someone's face than add to someone's potential inner turmoil.

Henri is terrible at asking for help and so I kind of wonder if the room that he is stuck in is kind of metaphor for depression. You're seemingly stuck and don't know how to get out. It's scary. You feel like you're looking at the world through a small window not really participating with no way to contact the outside world. If you ask the wrong people for help they're super unhelpful. It would also explain the noose he finds. It was almost the exact same apartment and even used the same key as Henri's apartment, but dusty and dilapidated. Sort of a show of what would happen if Henri didn't find a way out his own apartment or his battle with depression.

@Moll Gar also the part where he has Aava take a picture of the apartment above him, but when he looks at it the picture’s actually pointed at his apartment. To me that signals what his apartment TRULY looks like, but the reason why the game depicts it as having some furniture and other things in it is bc in Henri’s mind he feels that what he has in his apartment is normal, even tho that’s not really the case.

Seeing as Henri is very clearly depressed, I wonder if "The Night" in this game is synonymous to the phrase " The Dark Night of the Soul"? This is an extreme, I guess, "psychological trial" i would say, that one goes through when facing serious trauma. Overcoming it, of course, leads to freedom and strength. But losing to it can cause serious mental health issues, or worse, in some cases. If anyone else has heard of this, please correct if I'm wrong :)

This playthrough is one of those rare commentary videos, where the spectator feels the same as the player, in this case you Chris. You brilliantly captured all that this game was offering and every bit of emotion - the scares, the frustration, the gasps and all the rest was felt, like I was playing it too, it's like you got the character, fantastic job. The game has a unique style, even thou it has Silent Hill 4 written all over it, I mean the hole in the storage, the blocked door, the outside center apartment, the noise neighbors and sketchy characters, THE PROTAGONIS'S NAME - HENRI (in Silent Hill 4, the name is Henry, slight change, but very much the same). Overall, it atmosphere and the ending was solid. Perfectly executed game and amazingly commentated playthrough. Thank you Chris!

The ending really hit me. My pen literally fell out of my hand. In my interpretation it was the fight of getting out. Out of Depression, out of the house, all the struggles as struggles in the head. And never wanting to bother anyone although you are in a really shitty situation. Imagining what other people might think, if you (beeing called a creep for example)…. And the end where he says, he couldn’t have done it without help and he encourages him, that he indeed did it all by himself. I guess she says it, because although she helped him, he needed to make to choice to open up to her, ask for help, fight these monsters and so he made it….

This game was legit so damn good, I loved every minute of it. Really deserved the title "psychological horror". It was one of the few in that genre that felt done right. It was creepy and eerie, without any dumb jumpscares, sound design was good graphics fit well, and no bugs. I like how the story seems to be an euphemism for depression and learning to ask for help, but in the end you're the one who has to do the work. Yes, Aava helped you, but you had to kill that "hanging man" yourself, and you had to leave the appartment yourself. I think the bad ending implies or directly shows us that the protag hanged himself with that noose in his cabinet. Hence the monster that looked like a person hanging from the ceiling, with an empty picture frame as the face. The other monster might as well embodied the depression itself, even though I am not sure.

I'm afraid not. Henri and Aava are the same person. The key worked for the upstairs apartment because it's his apartment. It's also why the camera was in there. This should also be why the picture Aava took with the camera of the upstairs window didn't match what he was expecting. The angle was all wrong, because it wasn't taken from her window. Another hint is when the "fake" Aava (negative thoughts, I assume) shows up and repeats words, leading to the sentence: Aava is Henri. Something wrong. Empty up here. Same as before. Repeating. Useless. It ends with her saying it was all his own effort that gave him happiness. Hinting again that the lovable and helpful Aava is actually Henri's positive thoughts.

Okay first, yeeeeeessss to more games cause I'm delightfully confused and wish to know/experience more of this world. Second, in the vein of defining/translating words, the name for this ending, Euneirophrenia, is defined as "a pleasant, happy state of mind one has after a good dream. Euneirophrenia’s antonym is malneirophrenia and it’s origins are from Ancient Greek, eu (good), oneiro (dream), phrenia (state of mind). Euneirophrenia is a euphoric, contented state of mind that one feels after a great night of sleep and pleasurable dreams. To feel euneirophrenia is to feel a deep serenity and a refreshing peace of mind as one awakens from a delectable night of rest. Euneirophrenia is almost always the ideal goal of a good night’s sleep and it’s truly the best way to wake-up!" The name for the bad ending is valveilla, which as I understand is finnish as well and means waking. I don't speak finnish. Oh, btw, searching for euneirophrenia also brings up oneirophrenia, which is a hallucinatory, dream-like state brought on by sleep deprivation, sensory deprivation or drugs. It's apparently out of fashion though so I guess it's no longer diagnosed as a standalone issue? It's interesting all the same though....I adore surreal games like this. There's just something special about games that hit just that right balance of interesting and confusing, the sense you can figure out more if you just dig a bit more. Same feeling Silent Hill gives me.

Hi CJU, loved the walkthrough. My take on this game is that Henri was suicidal this night and maybe was hitting a desperate point, hence him breaking down and asking Aava for help, but because of the shame/guilt he felt he didn’t want her to ask any neighbors for help (letting her in was a huge step for him as well). I think the times that she was going to make a call for help for Henri, it seemed like it took forever bc when you’re in a deep depression, time seems to stand still if it makes sense. So while Aava may have been gone 10-15 minutes, in Henri’s mind it was hours. Perhaps the monsters that Henri sees are representing his dark/harmful thoughts, and dropping the cabinet on the arms was representing him fighting them off. Something else, perhaps the reason Henri threw the knife away after one use is because he was afraid to keep something like that on him in this state, bc he knew he would use it. Also, I’m seeing the cabinet that blocked the door as maybe guilt, shame, depression, and maybe Henri has “hit a wall” in his depression. I think the streets being empty signifies how alone Henri feels, and the point where his window only opens so much signifies how hard it is for him to open up to people.

Funny, I haven’t read one comment about the parallels between this game and silent hill 4: the room. And dude being called Henry, the music. The door being blocked. I mean it’s brilliant. I just love this concept. It’s so creepy to me

What about a Cell Phone (in Germany we call it Handy). Everyphone has a Cell Phone, isn´t it so? Henri can use the Window but he can not. How can he live alone, he´s such helpless?

I quite liked this one, especially taking it a little more literally? I agree that the PC is depressed of course, and I think Henri was quite content to just go forward as a lonely and sad recluse...UNTIL he was forcibly trapped in his apartment by ghosts. This night was a catalyst for change for Henri. I don’t want it to be yet another metaphor for emotions, I like it better to think of an emotional journey and also a supernatural one.

This game looks like it's being rendered at a quarter PAL resolution, displayed on a half-dead 13" CRT TV that has Vaseline rubbed on its screen.

this was Great. Gave the feeling you are really in an apartment going crazy all night trying to get out. Lots of intrigue and mystery, tempo is slow for some but still gives the feeling of an all-nighter. Great game. Thank you, for sharing it with us.

I believe you were right. The guy was dead....it was only in death that he realized that he needed help (wonderful play on things there) It's for people to realize if they start to feel like this guy, where things you love are boring or you feel alone...or whatever. Please ask for help....(as most who commit suicide never do and friends never realize that they are that depressed) Maybe this was a wake up to for people who are around others who notice these behaviours to be more proactive. They might just save someone's life...... Anyways, that was my deep dive and I need to get out of the rabbit hole now

This was a ride! Thanks for making it so enjoyable. Really liked the sound design on this one. The music was so oppressive and stressing me out, but then when it’s gone it’s like: oh no, this is worse!! Same with the monsters and Ava’s aphex twin sounding theme song. Really mood setting.

Thanks to you I have overcome my fear of the horror genre. Yesterday I completed Layers of Fear before I watched your video. The weird thing is I have played Alone in the Dark and Harvester. Somewhere along the way I got PTSD from too many jump scares. You have also saved me so much money by playing all the terrible games and for that I am grateful

It looks like you got a good ending, I think? I think Henri survived? In any case, I'm actually really, really glad. I liked him as a character and was really rooting for him. I hope he'll end up with Aava and find happiness! :) Also, thanks so much for playing this! That was TOO fun to watch, and I don't think I would have even known about it had it not been for your playthrough! Kudos to the developers for a great story!

I think RL here should collaborate with N4BA (Wrong Floor & From The Darkness). They can handle monster design & some of the more surreal story points while N4BA handles level design & graphics. I think the two of them together could make the next Silent Hill.

Also we're all just gonna gloss over the main character committing manslaughter with the 360 noscope CoD knife throw out the window?
