Blake and Folio Society Event December 2023

Illustrator and Blake Society Trustee, Tamsin Rosewell, talks to Folio Society Art Director, Raquel Leis Allion, Production Director, Kate Grimwade, and Senior Designer, Charlotte Tate - all of whom have worked on the creation of this new Folio Society edition. Songs of Innocence and of Experience is arguably Blake’s defining work - certainly, it is the work through which many discover Blake first. The Folio Society is itself a treasure of British culture: an employee-owned and independent publisher founded in 1947, which itself has gathered a dedicated following of those who appreciate artisan-quality publishing.

What a wonderful conversation. I loved the discussion around Blake's gold leaf, so technically challenging. Such dedication to the Artist's hard work. I think Blake would have been moved by the care given to his work.
Some folio books, although sewn, good quality and beautiful, nevertheless still don't lie flat. Some of them close themselves if not held open as they are sewn slightly differently to the others that lie open. I wish they would state which type of sewing is used on each book on the website. I value the lie flat books more highly and it would be better to know before buying. I have both types by Folio Society and they are both excellent. However, I prefer the lie flat ones slightly more especially for larger books; they just seem more premium and are more comfortable to read. A book that lies flat when open tends to have a little triangular hollow at the spine when open. To me this is the sign of a well bound book.
