Foreigners (exception of china\Japan) are most always stereotyped as being good at rapping even if Asian. I’ve seen it happen in many groups over the years & often end up being the rapper of their groups & it felt really annoying watching when that assumption happens, especially when that’s the position they ended up taking so it went right along with the stereotype. It’s not just black people on that one.

As a black woman, when people describe us as being “tough”, I understand they think it’s a compliment. But actually it along the lines of stereotypical and offensive because it brings it back to the stereotype of black women being more masculine with no emotions or feelings like we can’t get hurt or be emotional just like any other raced women. And as a black american woman, it especially is offensive because of how black women were treated during slavery as though my ancestors were not human, that we were objects, where they did all kinds of experiments on as well.

But i agree racism is still very disgusting and stereotyping should never be justified. I am so proud of her and everything that she does. Being black is not a monolith , and I’m so happy that she made these comments based on how comfortable she is. If she had answered in a different tone or different way I would still be proud of her. I feel for her , cause she does carry the burden of having to always explain her blackness in this industry but I just hope she knows that there are so many people behind her. Yea, even tho there’s racism, prejudice, & other types discriminations around the world, it’s your personal choice of what/who you want to support bc not every single person on earth are racist, prejudice, or shows discrimination. Me, personally, I’ll always support Kpop, it really was an eye opener & a dream for me when I got into alittle over a decade ago. You can clearly see the different styles & genres influences that makes Kpop what it is, especially heavily on Today’s Kpop. I couldn’t live without Kpop🇰🇷🎶❤️🥰. And at the end of the day the positive outweighs the negative🤍.

Fatou's always amazing, very humble and smart girl who can defend herself and others (even if she don't have to), not afraid to call out people when it's needed. She's also talented, cute, delicate, pretty, badass, she's everything, I love her for the whole person she is! She is my favorite Idol! (To be honest Judy and Youngheun are also my favorites, I can't choose between those 3 😭, they're all so special and awesome for me. Blackswan is just the next level and you don't know how much I'm excited to welcome the new member(s), Shreya and Gabriela seem very nice and hardworking girls!!!)

Your skin tone doesn't determine how feminine or masculine you are. It doesn't determine if you should sing, rap or dance. It doesn't determine how "cute" or "tough" you are. Everybody should be treated equally and be seen equally without any prejudice - hopefully one day we can live in a world like that... If you want ignore that just to protect your peace or something do that don’t come in the comments saying I’m exaggerating when I as a black woman aswell have to be subjected to those comments too. How come only she looks “manly” while other kpop girl groups can do confident powerful concepts and never get that comment????

I agree with you. I will talk about my experience and lifestyle. I am a black girl, a Saudi Arabian citizen. I have many white-skinned friends because they love my color, the way I look and my lifestyle. Not all blacks in the world are cruel or thugs. We are very different.

I feel you. This was me years ago. It wasn’t painful for me now because it’s exactly what I expected. You’ll come to a point when you realize that most people are ok with being ignorant. If it doesn’t affect them, they won’t be bothered enough to learn. There are few people who will learn from experience and change to be more understanding. Those people are gems! But expect less and you will be happier in this life. Especially as a Black girl or woman, it’s necessary that you don’t invest emotionally in anyone too much.

It really shocked me to hear them assume that she was "tough".. just because she was black. People at my school always tell me that I'm very "sensitive" or "cute".. No one ever refers to me as "strong" or "rough".. So this is my first time ever hearing something like this. That assumption/stereotype is definitely not true. Along with the one about all black people be rappers. Never heard of beyonce? Or giveon? Or Whitney Houston? Or new edition? Or many other black singers. I personally do rap because my singing is horrible but not all black people are rappers. Fatou (imo) has the 2nd best vocals in the group.

the amount of important stereotypes being broken down here is sooo important!! as a black creative myself, i can relate to the stereotypes thrown at fatou and have even faced some of them in my own life. it’s good to see this type of education be put into this growing world. i hope to see fatou and black swan thrive for years to come! they are already such an inspiration for past, present and future generations. makes me happy knowing other young black creatives out there can see someone who looks like them working in their dream field

You're absolutely spot on with this comment. If Fatou had gotten angry or upset, this would have been used to bring out the "angry black woman" trope against her and they would claim that she's fulfilling the stereotype. She handled it in just the right way. Unfortunately, black women don't even get to be angry in response to racial aggressions against us without having our righteous anger used against us.

What’s more upsetting is they all mention at the beginning before they say something rude that they know it may be.

Yeah I actually thought this video was great because a) Fatou reacted really well and b) she helped by clearing up what was problematic and the people even noticed themselves that those were stereotypes

I was craving for Blackswan content, I'm so happy, this video is really interesting, we should show it to as many people as we can! Kind of weird how some people put foreign kpop idols into a box solely based on their appearance. Apparently Fatou's role in the group is to just be Black.🥴As if foreign members have no other contributions to the group other than simply being foreign. It's also kind of done with Visuals of groups too, reducing their contributions and efforts to just "pretty".

Ngl I always thought being cute suits Fatou more. She's naturally so adorable w her mannerisms I was more surprised to see her tough side on stage lol. And let's not ignore how she's a multilingual queen and former model who can also sing, dance and rap, and I like that she is actually a GROWN woman despite only debuting recently. Not saying teens can't debut but we all know Kpop likes to act like you're ancient after 22 as far as debut is concerned.

If everyone was just not assuming things about others before even knowing them, this world would be a little more peaceful...

I love that she was given the opportunity to call out stereotypes and on a platform where Korean audiences will hopefully hear what she has to say.

Ive been noticied that in general with korean channels, when theres a black person they always say theyre "tough/swag/etc" even when theyre just standing there😭. ANYWAYSS basically when a black person, woman specifically, doesn't fit those stereotypes its "weird" to people because they expect us to fit in what the they see on the media.

No. Literally! Every time I watch Korean reaction channels the majority if not all the time when they see a black person they always describe them as “hip hop” “cool” “swag” and that’s it. Yet when it comes to a Caucasian or lighter skinned person they always comment “beautiful” “gorgeous” etc.. like??? Black people are also beautiful and gorgeous. They’re not just “swag” it’s so frustrating to watch since people always make assumption and use stereotypes.

I don’t understand how people think that Black people can only be rappers. We literally originated the style of pop and R&B singing that is used by nearly everyone to this day.

Fatou is such a classy woman. The few videos I've seen of her, I love! She's great. And she's really shutting these racist stereotypes down clearly but nicely, even though she doesn't have to be nice about it. Must be hard coming into a very homogenous culture, which the Korean (especially kpop) society is, and standing out as a black person. She's very strong for tackling the racism and doing her thing, which she does so well!

Wdym she looks more like herself… They don’t even know her 😭😭 I know many black girls and myself that aren’t tough and rough. Although as a black girl it makes be sad, I get there are stereotypes and ignorant comments hard to get rid of, it’s all about trying to educate yourself.

This awareness and conversation is important. I’m so proud of Fatou, the first fully black idol speaking on this topic and seeing people stereotype you just because the color of your skin is tough and tiring. It’s really sad to see such negative stereotypes placed on black women in 2022, it can be dangerous to assume we’re so tough, even in unsafe situations when we need protection. We are just like any other woman. Black people don’t all act and think the same. I hope that more people can become educated and pass that knowledge along to stop the prejudice and stereotypes.

This is literally just one situation trying to break at least some stereotypes down. Why so negative? Why not add something actually helpful? These are types of conversations that need to be had within all races and across all races. And this is a great start/small example. No need for unnecessary race wars here.

@@TheFinalFantasyFan11 look, we all know stereotypes doesn't work for the whole population but that's it, they're just stereotypes, u can't "stop them" and even if someone from another race doesn't have stereotypes for a race they might generalize things like "oh asians are so small" because most of the population is. But that's just it, unless it's a stereotype that very offensive like "oh asians eat dogs" then that's when it's crossed the line. I think the koreans in the video just says "oh they look tough" because black people have different features from us, they have less softer features. Can you guarantee that you can stop all stereotypes? 😆 To me they are just harmless unless it's said in a way that's supposed to offend you.

I really like the way she talks, it perfectly shows her friendly personality.

The fact that Koreans associate black = American, is a problem too. Black people can be literally any nationality and their culture will be totally different to each other.

Ahhh I feel so represented, it’s so great to see a black girl talk about these things and also being in a kpop group. That’s so cool, and I’m glad the industry is getting more diverse. Blackswan look so great, I’m gonna check it out. :)

Fatou is so amazing and talented!! and she will continue to do so as she pleases, i’m sure there will be a lot stereotypical comments being made in the future as well, even now you’d think respect would be shown but unfortunately not everyone understands the stereotypes they get shown certain things growing up resulting in their mindset, i mean it’s not necessarily disrespectful but if she’s giving off warnings that’s a sign, maybe don’t say things regarding stereotypes it puts you in and the person in an uncomfortable situation. In any case Fatou did great giving the corrections to their feedback this is why we love her ❤️❤️
