Blacksmithing : Hand Forging Penannular Brooch / Fibula

I am sharing the process of hand forging Medieval Times inspired Penannular Brooch / Viking Fibula / Medieval Cloak Pin / Celtic Brooch, using traditional methods of blacksmithing, side draft forge and stone coal.
A piece of metal I used is a round bar 6,5 mm. I reforged it to a square bar 5,5mm x 5,5mm, so if you have similar square bar available - feel free to skip the squaring part! This little project consists of forging two pieces: horse shoe shape brooch or fibula or sakta as we call it here in Latvia and a needle. For forging the needle I used the same material.
Blacksmithing techniques: drawing, twisting, scrolling, shaping the circle, hot cutting.
The tools are: anvil, rounding hammer, blacksmith's tongs, pliers, blacksmith's vise, wire brush, rasp for finishing. No power hammer needed for this project.
Hope that this video could be helpful for blacksmith enthusiasts as well as for craft loving community or just any person interested in how metal craft is made! If you are inspired to forge such type of brooch, please let us know about your results!
Spring birds are singing all around Sun Hills, inviting the sun to shine warmer with every day!
We hope you will find out something new about blacksmithing and enjoy your visit to our small countryside workshop!
It is great to hear that our videos seem to have calming and relaxing effect! =) We really like the original sounds of our smithy, we use a microphone RØDE for sound recording. So all the sounds in our videos are recorded in our workshop and around it. Relaxing sounds and calming yet organized atmosphere are inevitable parts of what we hope our videos should feel like.
If you like the video, please, let us know by leaving a like - your kind support is always so motivating!

I got into forging this year - the forge I work in is aprox 200 years old - and I am producing Brooches, Bottle openers and nails for Training. So far my brooches have not all been good for using but I think it'll evolve fast. I like how you compose your shots and how you present the forging process.

Great work ! They were such clean forgings even before the brush. Glad to see someone working the steel at a lower than ""surface of the sun" hot. You can see the scale just pop off and not reform.. The camera work is fantastic! Love the angles and clarity. Thanks!
