Blackmagic, You Missed the Mark | PYXIS 6K Reaction

Фильм және анимация

I've been a huge fan of Blackmagic Cameras. I still own two Pocket 4Ks, but I am disappointed with the camera and we will talk about why in this video. I've been wanting to find a main camera for my production work, and I was hoping this would be it, but to me, this missed the mark and I'm not up with the hype.

Hey man, I appreciate you making this video to voice your perspective. I will most certainly be buying this camera! It's exactly what I've been looking for from black magic. I hope I can help clear up some of your questions: Firstly, regarding omission of prores, black magic is trying to make their b-raw an industry standard by forcing people to use it who work with their cameras. They have to pay licensing fees in order to have access to prores, so by excluding it, not only do they not have to pay the licensing fee, but now they can also get people to start using b raw as a standard that is superior to prores for raw workflows. Secondly, the Pyxis is not a pocket camera, it's an entirely new system; I don't think it's fair to say that the lack of an articulating screen is BMD deviating from their pocket series, because the entire camera is itself an intentional deviation. The majority, if not all, Cinema cameras in the box format have a fixed screen that is inferior to what BMD has done here. Honestly, the 6K Pro w/ battery grip is the perfect camera for you if you like black magic because it has prores and internal NDS. A lot of your complaints seem to stem from the fact that you keep referencing the pictures as a pocket camera when it is not intended to be that-- it was literally created to be rigged up how you like it. The Pyxis is targeting a totally different demographic and workflow. A competitor for this camera would be the komodo, kInfinity mavo, and I would even say the Alexa mini LF. Any AC or Cam op in the industry knows that Cinema cameras have to be rigged to get the most out of them.

They didn't miss the mark. The controversy is specifically between Indy solo shooters vs. production team shooters. The Pyxis is NOT meant to be a handycam with a little flip-out screen you take on your family vacation! Blackmagic will have an external camera control monitor soon. All REDs and all ARRIs have 7" control monitors on top. ARRI has their own camera control monitor the CCM-1 7” LCD screen. RED has their own DSMC2 and DSMC3 7.0" LCD screens. The Pyxis is a production set camera not a freak'in handycam.

I agree that the Pyxis certainly is a success for certain scenarios. It’s just that your opinion that only “handycams” have built in flip-out screens isn’t shared by blackmagic themselves. They’re building flip-out screens into all the URSA models, including the new high end models, and you definitely don’t take them on your family vacation either…😂 That’s the main reason I’m confused… if BM had had a different approach from the start, it would make more sense to me. But yes, I’m sure it’s perfect for many situations. I just think it wouldn’t have hurt to have the screen flip out…

@@andynonimuss6298 It's actually falling in a very limited and odd space. Production teams usually have enough budget to use more expensive and capable cameras, Indie solo shooters (aka filmmaker on a low budget) may be their target tho, if they can get along with the limitations BM wanted for this model (only Braw, slow sensor not ideal for fast paced shoots, heavily cropped 50p, only one mini XLR, and ofc the need to have an external screen always on top to at least see what they're shooting). Leaving aside the lack of NDs of the 6k pro and no AF whatsoever, only one SDI (need to use transmitter and monitor in series adding delay and potential issues).

these black magic camera s are just repackage pocket 4ks processors with different sensors added to them. they use cheap tricks like cropping into the sensor, instead of down-sampling, to get lesser formats and more frame rates. so, if you have some noises at open gate, you ll have big popcorn noises of the same image crop to 1080 for examlpe. Black magic carmera s do have a good image given adequate lighting condition. Blackmagic 6K Pro Pocket or Panasonic LUMIX S5IIx seem like a better value than the Pyxis for now.

Most cameras use windowing for raw capture on Bayer pattern sensors (Red, Sony, Arri, etc.). That's one reason so many DP's shoot ProRes instead of raw. The camera (regardless of manufacturer) shoots full sensor and scales the image before capture in compressed formats (Prores, H.265 or whatever). Raw capture doesn't downsample or scale images, (otherwise it's not raw). The Ursa 12k S35, FF, and 17k 65mm can shoot at lower resolutions without windowing because they use RGBWW sensors instead of Bayer pattern sensors. When they do window, it's for use with S16 or S35 glass.

I’m probably gonna wait til summer when everybody will get their fancy Cine URSAs and the second hand market will be flooded with 12ks and 4.6ks. But people have been BEGGING BMD for exactly what they just released... the sensor from the Pocket Cinema Camera... in cine box style. I'm not so sure many people will let go of their G2's and s35 12ks for the Ursa Cine... the Ursa Mini (s35 4.6k and 12k) is a great single-operator camera... Ursa Cine is a beast for a different workflow and use case. I'm betting a lot of us Ursa Mini owners will continue operating our current cameras while renting the 12k FF and 17k. Those that can, will (probably) buy the Cine model and use the "OG" Minis as B cams. at least that's my plan (right now). PYXYS looks interesting as a B or C cam. I rig my cameras mostly, but I do sometimes need a lighter set up for run and gun work and that eliminates this camera for me. As for the prores, as I mention in the video, I've worked with clients in the past who don't wanna deal with the raw workflow. If I'm handing off files, they want something easy sometimes and request prores. So with my GH6, S5 II X, or pocket 4ks I can shoot in prores and hand it off. But I also prefer braw to prores anyway, it's just sometimes editors need a certain codec.

I admire you going out and making this video, but you should not be giving advice on cameras. I can tell you have very little experience working with different cameras. Sony FX6 does not come with a V-Mount it comes with a BPU and so does the RED Komodo, you can always add a plate or adaptor V-Mount battery onto it, or if you are like me you just use the same one you were using with your BMPCC4k or 6k or 6k FF same 2 pin Lemo to D-TAP as the whole line of pocket cameras. But I forgot you complain about the battery not being V-Mount then complain about rigging the camera out??? That is what we call a contradiction. The BPU is there to hot swap V-Mount Batteries so the camera never shuts off while changing batteries and when plugged into the V-Mount will be recharged. That is generally how the pro's do it on the ARRI Alexa and others, If you ever worked on a professional set you would of seen that. The only difference is on the Alexa you have to plug in a large Anton Bauer brick with a 4pin XLR. You don't understand how pissy clients and directors get if they ever see that camera turn off during the day, plus its such a slow start up time it is a must to power it all day. Internal ND's are cheap glass and are not full spectrum. There is nothing worse than throwing cheap glass in front of a nice sensor that goes for any filters, ND's, Soft FX, and Lenses. Internal ND is for broadcasters and documentarians who cannot change ND's on the front of the lens quickly, although in todays world your better off with a VND, not like I'm a big fan of them put great in a pinch. Everything everyone complains about shows how little experience each person has in the professional world. Why have SDI instead of HDMI why does it come with a PL Mount I hate PL Mount, why does it have multiple types of media recording, why is it not run and gun put I want to rig it out, why no autofocus (because auto focus is shit, I want to tell the camera what to do not some fing computer AI which is often wrong and always fishing focus) why is the screen fixed on the side that is a question from someone who never operated a camera on a dolly. Experience will answer all your complaints instead of click-baiting for views.

The reason NDs are in the 6k pro is because it's an EF mount and the flange space allows enough space to add them. That debunks all the rubbish about not having built in ND filter people are whining about. 13 stops is more than enough because this camera is made for controlled environment, so the scenes can be lit properly. FYI, Hollywood DPs never go pass 400 ISO/ASA, they don't care about 20,000 ISO... so, that killed the complaint about low lights capability people are also whining about. Screen on the side? On top, they gave options to mount a monitor or use the EVF (your choice)...that kills that side screen complaints. WHAT ELSE?
