Blackmagic Design Speed Editor VS Editors Keyboard - Which One is Better For YOU?

Фильм және анимация

Hey Dudes,
The Blackmagic Design Speed Editor and Editors keyboards for DaVinci Resolve 17 are now even cheaper to own. But even with this in mind, which one is right for you. In this video I hope to answer some of your questions.
Heres a quick look at the Speed Editor and Editor's keyboard specs:
The DaVinci Resolve keyboards have been designed in conjunction with the cut page to make editing dramatically faster. You get physical controls that you can feel in your hands, making the experience much better than software only editing. Unlike a mouse, the machined metal search dial with soft rubber coating allows very accurate search and positioning of the timeline. It feels just like holding the timeline in your hand! Trim keys allow the search dial to be used for live trimming, which is faster because the search dial is larger and more accurate.
DaVinci Resolve Editor Keyboard
The DaVinci Resolve Editor Keyboard is a full sized traditional QWERTY edit keyboard in a premium, all metal design. Featuring a machined metal search dial with clutch, it also includes extra edit, trim and timecode entry keys. It's even designed to install via a desk cut-out for flush mounting
Simply press one of the trim buttons and the search dial will transform into a large adjustment knob for real time, precise trimming.
Transport Control
Hardware control panels are perfect for fast playback control! Instantly start and stop playback using the "space bar" style button that's positioned so it can be pressed with your thumb. The shuttle, jog and scroll buttons change the function of the search dial, so you can edit fast and accurately.
Append To End
Append to end is fantastic for building
edits fast. Simply select an in and out point on the clip and then append to end will add the clip to the end of the timeline. Append to end is fantastic when adding shots to an edit from content that’s been shot in time order.
Fast In and Out Points
Entering in and out points is the most used function in editing, so the speed editor keyboard includes large in and out point buttons that you can easily locate by feel. That’s perfect for two handed editing where you're using your right hand for transport control and your left hand is placing in and out points and performing edits. You can simply scroll along with the search dial and place in and out points anywhere you want. Once the in and out points are set, just reach your fingers up to the edit function buttons to perform the edit. The in and out points can also be used to focus the source tape. Then you can change the source tape back to the whole bin by pressing the escape key.
Place On Top
Place on top is similar to traditional edit functions and this edit mode will place the clip on top of the background layer that’s already in the timeline. If the timeline doesn't have a layer above the background layer, it will add a new timeline track and then place the clip on top.

Hey dudes - Both the speed editor and the editors keyboards by Blackmagic Design are now super cheap for what they are. But when you remove the 200 USD price difference, which one should you buy? Well this video will answer that for you. But I am also interested if you already own a speed editor or a editors keyboard and what your favourite features are?

Something that is super important to understand about the Editor’s Keyboard is that the paint on the keycaps themselves rubs off pretty quickly. I bought it when it first came out and within 6 months, the paint on the most common keys wore off to the point that almost no paint was left on them. Looking really close, you can see how the paint is applied. It’s not laser etched or something like that like most keyboards - it is actually a very finely applied paint. I got the keyboard replaced and the same exact thing happened. I went back and forth with BM product management for over a year asking to buy the ‘replacement keycaps’ they say are available in the product description. Eventually, the product manager admitted there have been complaints of the paint coming off of a few of the units (including the Speed Editors) but that they had no intention of changing the manufacturing process. So, before you buy the keyboard, or the SE, please keep in mind the paint on the keycaps is going to rub off pretty quick and it costs money to get the caps replaced.

Your review convinced me to buy the Editor's Keyboard from the start, to avoid learning anything twice. @@EntrNmHre Yes, exactly that: the Adobe Premiere sales model is outdated. In the UK the DaVinci Resolve Studio upgrade is GBP 275 + VAT direct from BM (and that's once-off, not yearly), so I reckon the Editor's Keyboard is costing me GBP 170 (USD 201 / EUR 194) so I'm happy! As it's a company purchase we get the VAT back of course. At this price no one in their right mind should buy only the software; even if you don't want the keyboard, it could be flogged on EBay for more than 170 quid. 🙂

I try and avoid laptops as eventually they need their batteries replaced. If you need it now - get the Mac Studio, don't waste time with PC's - resolve is runs far better and is more stable on the Mac platform. BMD has a partnership with Apple which gets prioritised as Apple has a set number of fixed configurations compared to the unlimited cong variations one can have on a PC. A PC can currently be made technically more powerful, but the user experience is always on the side of the Mac platform. Hope this helps. Interested to know what you choose.....?

Well-made video for comparison. Thank you. I still drool over wanting to have the keyboard. I was on the fence about purchasing the editor's keyboard. but I ended up purchasing the speed editor instead. Here are my main factors in my decision: CONS OF THE KEYBOARD: Too big for the keyboard rollout. Too loud. More expense. POSITIVE OF THE SPEED EDITOR: I get a Flywheel. Short cut keys to improve workflow (and I don't mind working in the cut page - I like it actually as a way to prep for the edit page). I purchase it on that free deal when you buy another studio license - which made it virtually free when I sold the unused license key. The flywheel and many keys still work in the Edit page. I get to keep using a quieter keyboard. I can easily move to another computer (laptop, a friends computer or another studio computer w/ Davinci Resolve - and have an easier time because I remained with a standard keyboard. I would still buy the editors keyboard if it was quieter though.

Interesting review. I got the SE because it came "free" with Resolve Studio. I use an illuminated gamers keyboard with the SE and a tracker ball. The gamers keyboard has 6 macro keys which are useful. Both the BMD keyboards seem to suffer with the BMD disease. That is BMD design them with a single use case in mind and no flexibility to adapt them to other use cases. (for example the 9 wasted cam keys in the middle of the SE) Hopefully BMD upgrade to permit reprograming the SE keys CAM via and app with a firmware upgrade. Though all too often BMD launch something with flaws and then rather than an upgrade to fix it is a whole new device. The ATEM mini debacle for example.

Just opened it a month ago as I am migrating from Pr Pro to Resolve editing platform and was excited to see how it may improve my workflow. After a month, I don’t see it speeding up my workflow. I continue using keyboard shortcuts, the speed editor sits on my desk and looks pretty neat. The wheel is cool, but keyboard short cuts get me up and down the timeline just fine. I was hoping the number keys on the speed editor worked like a video switcher by selecting a layer and can be used to cut in real time, but that’s not what they do In all honesty, the long thick USB-C cable gets the most use charging my cellphone. Im holding on to the speed editor incase it may be a good tool in the field as DIT paired with a color panel, but in the office it’s a tech looking paperweight

While I would agree in some cases, not all. Depends on the size of your Van and location cart for a DIT, home office or studio. You can have a full edit suite these days on a tiny desk, where the editors keyboard would be an issues. Or have a computer in a server rack in a server room, where both would be a nightmare to connect. Which is what I have just had happen in my new studio.

Thats a great question. I guess that really has to do with how you are editing with your Macbook Pro. If you are happy using the inbuilt keyboard, you can map a lot of the functions and create hot keys or just stick with the FCP, PREM or RESOLVE preconfigured shortcuts. But if you are using your laptop in clamshell mode or vesa mount platform - then either the Editors keyboard of Speed editor from BMD would work really well. If I was using a laptop, I would get the speed editor. As for the overall typing experience, thats very subjective and hard for me to advise on. gonna rant here a little; I feel like both the editor keyboard and speed editor are mostly gimmicks, not that well thought out, with the jogwheel as the only actual physical added value, and that there aren't any critical reviews out there. For example, (this is specifically for the keyboard) if you look at the buttons above the jogwheel, the timeline and source button, the "q" shortcut to toggle is way faster and more ergonomic, as you can leave your hand on the wheel. Which makes these buttons kind of useless. If you want to move your playhead from edit point to edit point you have to reach for the arrows which are kind of far away (details, but important), which could be these 2 buttons on the top (and which also need to be closer, probably it's now there because of design/outlining). An inner/outer ring for jogging/scrolling would be way more comfortable, instead of reaching for the current 3 buttons all the time, from which the shuttle mode is just horrible to use. The other buttons on the left side could just as well be regular keys, which also didn't even work in the first place in the edit page, and we're talking about an "editor" keyboard here. That you can't zoom the timeline with a modifier key and the jogwheel is a big missed opportunity. And i can think of so many more. And that's about it about the additional value of such device. The idea of having a specific device for editors has so much more potential. Just look at the fairlight desktop editor for fun. I feel like the editor keyboard is designed for the eye, maybe the budget, the marketing, and not for actual efficiency. To end this short rant with something positive; i do love it that BMD offers specific hardware tools for editors. But there is a lot to improve.

Oh you rant is very welcome. You make some great points. A lot of people love the speed editor and just as many dislike it and prefer the editors keyboard. @@timoheckmann1355Oh I get you. I come from Australia and now that I am in Europe, the whole ANSI vs ISO keyboards still plagues after 8 years. So for me the editors keyboard being made in AUS, means it's in the correct layout that I am used to. Boggles my mind why different hemispheres require different sized shift keys….But yes that entire CONTROL Command key Windows vs Mac is a nuisance

I know thats the biggest downside of the editors keyboard - if it had bluetooth, the editors keyboard would be close to a perfect product.
