Blackburn Rovers: The Premier League Champions That DISAPPEARED

Спорт

Blackburn Rovers were once one of only two teams to win the Premier League. They spent like crazy, they attracted the top talent in the land and they won very very big.
However, they collapsed almost immediately and have never found their way back to the top. This is their story.

Why isn't anyone talking about Szmodics he is playing for 19th placed Blackburn (3 places off relegation) and he finished as top scorer with 27 goals (2nd had 6 less goals) beating the likes of Vardy and Armstrong and he's not even a striker. The only reason I hear about him is because he's from my country (Ireland), surely a mid-table prem team will sign him

As a United fan my main view of Blackburn Rovers is that goddamn Brad Friedel, who always seemed like the best goalie in the world whenever he played against United! Especially that game where I genuinely gave up on anyone beating him until Scholes got the ball on the edge of the area and sat multiple defenders on their asses before scoring; it might just be the most relief I've ever felt watching football!

Kenny deserves a tone of credit though. Most of those players tanked after leaving Blackburn. Like in the late 90's Wilcox, Batty, Sherwood, Ripley, Sutton, Hendry and co were all still playing and most of them were still in their 20's or at the very least early 30's but no one really saw them as guys who could be on title winning teams. Arsenal, United and Liverpool weren't looking at them. If you put that team back together in 99, even with Shearer it wouldn't get near a title.

as a Blackburn fan, I'm very impressed with the research you have done here. When Venky's came in, the club was in a situation where it needed to be sold. The best option was deemed to be Venky's and they relied too much on advice from the wrong people - this story itself is worth a video. On a more positive note, Sammy Szmodics, became the first Blackburn player since Shearer to score 30+ goals this season. It would be great to keep him at the club for another season, but at the same time, he deserves a crack at Premier League

  • @neilbiggs1353

    @neilbiggs1353

As an outsider, I'm slightly disappointed with Venky's. One of the things that really set United on the path to greatness was the way their board went out to build up their commercial partnerships globally, and their commercial advantage is still massive to this day. I'd love to see a video go in to that as it's not often discussed (probably because people don't like thinking of clubs as businesses), because for me this is a key difference between the early Premier League winners. Jack Walker subsidised Rovers, the United owners built the business. This is what intrigued me about Venky's, in that given the number of people of a heritage that traces back to the Indian subcontinent in the area, it seemed like this was a chance to try and build a commercial profile for the club in India, and maybe the other surrounding countries too. What would it mean for example if Blackburn started to develop a number of players in their academy who could represent India in international football? From the outside though, they just seem to be typical owners who don't have a coherent vision of what they can do to take the club forward.

Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton which resulted in more than 50 goals between the two of them, Blackburn won the Premier League in 1995 That Cinderella story was, however, the end of Blackburn's time in the spotlight. Chris Sutton got injured whereas key players like David Batty and Alan Shearer, were grabbed by other clubs. The passing of Jack Walker in 2000 would mean that Blackburn no longer had the same economical strength.

Blackburn was such a promising club at its peak, that as tragic as it was, it really shouldn't come as a surprise that they fell off so quickly. The light that is twice as bright always burns half as long without proper facilitation. Still, it's crazy to think about what could have been had Blackburn just made the right adjustments to their personnel.

You neglected to mention that in the 1960 final, Dave Whelan* broke his leg and substitutes weren't a thing. That's a major reason why they decided to introduce them. And why Wolves managed to win 3-0. It was 10 v 11 most of the match on the huge Wembley pitch. *yes, the Wigan Athletic owner who got them into the Premier League, and owner of a huge sports shop chain, DW Sports (among other names).

As a Blackburn fan from the South East who has followed since the Mark Hughes era of David Bentley and David Dunn I'm so happy to see this video. I feel like so much focus is put on the big teams in the Premier league, which is fair enough capture the main audience. But none the less its still refreshing. For those wondering why I chose to say I'm from the South East, I couldn't tell you the amount of times ive been asked ive been asked why Blackburn am I from there. Not at all but we cant all support the big teams otherwise it makes for a boring game.

Looking back if Blackburn were able to make it work and become a Premier League force in the 90's and genuine competition to United imagine what they'd be today. The Manchester United we know today was built on the foundations of that 90's success. If Blackburn were able to win a couple more titles in the 90's then maybe they could have also become a global brand just like United and be worth billions today.

This was fantastic, Tinashe. As a minor note of interest, leaving school at the age of 14 was commonplace during the era of Jack Walker's childhood. My Grandfathers both did the same. You have to remember that this was not yet the era of University grants (or the more recent student loans). Even if you were bright, most could not afford to go to University.

I miss that small period where there was a top 8 instead of a top 6, because Bolton and Blackburn were dangerous.

If you'd tell Burnley fans in 1995 who back then finished 22nd in the championship that they would be premier League and Blackburn will be in the championship relegation battle in just 30 years time they would be very surprised.

To be fair, Jack Walker and what he did with Blackburn Rovers in 1995 set a dangerous president that would eventually lead to clubs like Chelsea, Man City, PSG ect... As much as people want to try and deny it, it still worked., others saw that buying success was possible and they started, thats why we eventually got FFP, it all started with Rovers in 1995.

A little fact for you, After blackburn won the FA cup for the third time running, the FA couldn't let us keep the trophy, so as compensation, we are the only club in England that are allowed to have our club crest on all 4 corner flags, not just 3 like other clubs do
