"A bit of Fry and Laurie" is also great. It stars Fry and Hugh Laurie. It was crazy to see Hugh Laurie star as House on Network TV

See Miriam on Graham Norton when she talks about "helping out" an American serviceman. Or creaming her pants when she met Sir Laurence Olivier. The looks on the other guests faces are so funny!!

Being that Margolies is IRL a Jewish lesbian, it's doubly impressive she plays a Puritan with such vigour - she has said in interviews it was something she was always a little in two minds about, but she always brings her A-game.

Great Boo's Up is one of those comedy gold moments

One of my favourite episodes, the ending cracks me up every time without fail! I really feel for you over the sketchbook story, as an artist and someone who drew a lot of fantasy art as a teen, it would have killed to have my work destroyed like that over something so ridiculous!

Dude, you cut some of the best punchlines! "Chairs are an invention of Satan...in my house, Nathaniel sits on a spike!" "And yourself?" "I sit on Nathaniel. Two spikes would be extravagant!" "Lord Whiteadder, a vow of silence. How interesting...tell me about it!"

I love how you called Baldrick Podraigh at the end. lol.

"Lady Whiteadder" is a parody of uptight self-appointed moral guardian Mary Whitehouse.

That was definitely the lovely Miriam!

Miriam Margolyes was also fantastic as the Infanta in "The Queen of Spain's Beard" from the first season.

Some of the lines in this episode reminded me of Upstart Crow, another Elizabethan era sit com written by Ben Elton and David Mitchell playing Shakespeare.

Meeyn, that sketch book story can have a lifetime effect on someone ;)

Just wonderful to see Yanks enjoying some of our finest English humour! Very encouraging! Blackadder is pure English comedy: rich language, tightly wrote - deadpan and silly simultaneously. Very glad you're enjoying! If you want a more modern English comedy that is so brilliantly written, an accurate satire of English politics featuring some of the most creative swearing ever employed anywhere, then try The Thick of It. Even if it's just for the character of Malcolm Tucker who is one of the top characters in a sitcom ever. A BBC comedy that won a sh*tload of awards when it was showing and was created by the creator of Veep with Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep is a kind of American version, but less sweary). Give it a go!

Bloody hell, your aunt sounds like Oliver Cromwell who banned Christmas celebrations, carol singing and football.

Miriam margolyes was great in Blackadder 1 as the Spanish queen and brilliant in blackadder 3 Christmas special as queen Victoria.....Not sure how Hugh Laurie went from this and ended up in 'House'

"STUPID BOY! COLD IS GOD'S WAY OF TELLING US TO BURN MORE CATHOLICS!"... 😂😂😂😂 as an English Catholic myself, whose family were persecuted in Tudor England, this is still one of the best lines in Blackadder. They simply dont write comedy like this anymore in case it offends anyone...

I heard an anecdote about the actors complaining about Miriam Margolyes hitting real hard, and pleading for her at least in the rehearsals to tone it down a bit.

Love some Blackadder. But if I could suggest taking a look at Toast of London with the brilliant Matt Berry as the man himself. Hilarious.

The Bishop you mentioned - Ronald Lacey, the Nazi that melted in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I always loved that line, "Two spikes is an extravagance, Nathaniel sits on the spike and I sit on Nathaniel." Sums up many a religious zealot.

You really need to watch Miriam Margolyes videos especially her many appearances on The Graham Norton Show. She is so hilariously naughty and wicked, she is a joy to watch because you never know how far she’ll go telling a story but there will always be a sting in the tale😉

There are great actors whose contributions made black adder so good Stephen fry black adder goes forth Brian blessed black adder and Miranda Richardson she was absolutely brilliant growing up watching movies in which Elizabeth the 1st was an intelligent tough nonsense queen to Miranda's squeaky high pitch girly brat

Hugh Laurie everytime I see him in old comedy's i just think no wonder he had to go to America to get a serious acting role. He's great but it was jarring to shake the Bertie Worcester persona.

I do too.

Just as a simplistic interpretation, as someone who watched this as a 13-year-old: puritans are like the Miriam Margolyes character. Puritans found the religious freedoms of England intolerable and so they escaped to created their puritan new world in America which is why your your country is all puritan Christian far-right-esque. I’m not saying that’s true. I’m saying that puritans and Americans are the same in my mind because of this episode of Blackadder.
