I dig what you're saying, but remember, Rakim was already out and influencing, along with the Moe Dee's, LL's, Melle Me'sl, Caz's, etc. G Rap raised the bar. He took lyricism to another level. He was the first spit-fire MC with complex rhymes. Rakim stepped up his game after G Rap came out. After 1989, new artists had to be dope to make the cut.

This is why most who grew up in the 80’s early 90’s get angry when they look at what’s being deliberately put out today, it’s like we went from this a kool g rap to kindergarten.

Schooly D was one of the original street crime lyricist and G Rap soon followed. Contrary to popular belief, we were calling them gangster rappers looong before the white media co-opted the phrase to use it to defame the art and put advisory stickers on it to stop niggas money. So there’s NOTHING wrong with calling G Rap a “Gangster Rapper” based on his subject matter spanning 30 years I doubt he’d be as offended as you are at the moniker. Peace

Road to Riches is an all time classic, it's story telling and show's the negative aspects of drug dealing and the criminal life. It's not just straight up gangsta rap, it ends up like a cautionary tale. The beat and production is also heavy AF. Ice Cube's 'Summer Vacation' actually does a similar thing in a more West Coast style, but that came a couple of years later.

Wasn't the Roots formerly known as Square Roots LOL!!! G Rap wasn't a multi-platinum selling artist but please believe you can take a tree of ya favorite MC MCs and G Rap WILL BE ONE OF THE ROOTS. Rakim and Krs-One were more well known, but G Rap had that sophisticated style that was ahead of its time. Black Thought, Nas, Big Pun, Jay-Z, AZ, Raekwon etc. are his sons. The way cats were rapping in the 90s, G Rap pioneered in the 80s!!! He even created a whole subgenre "mafioso" style that so many cats ran with!!!
