'Black Sails' Season 2 Interivew: Toby Schmitz and Clara Paget

Season 2 of Black Sails is heading into its second half and secrets are being revealed. No spoilers in case you haven’t watched it yet, but last week dropped a pretty huge bomb about Captain Flint’s (Toby Stephens) past. In present-day Nassau, there is a lot happening with Jack Rackham (Toby Schmitz), Max (Jessica Parker Kennedy) and Anne Bonney (Clara Paget) as well, though it’s a lot more subtle.
Power is shifting as Bonney discovers the depth of her feelings for Max and weighs that against her long history with Rackham. Just look at the threesome scene from the beginning of the season. It was far less about sex than it was about power; who could look who in the eyes and who was trying to escape their inner turmoil beneath the sheets.
I recently got a chance to visit the set of Black Sails in Cape Town, South Africa and chat with Schmitz and Paget about their characters and the power struggle that’s bringing up a lot of Bonney’s past and awakening things in her that she didn’t know were there. Make sure you stay tuned, because, in addition to the interview with Parker Kennedy and Zach McGowan we ran last week, we’ll have more coming up as the season progresses. When Season 3 premieres in 2016, we’ll have a bunch of sneak peeks and other big surprises.

Something this show gets right is the female characters. They're not "strong" in the overpowered, flawless Marvel sense. They're strong characters because they're complex characters with flaws and big character arcs. And they didn't turn all the male characters into weasels as an attempt to make the female characters seem better. The writing for all the characters is great in the show. They absolutely nailed it.

After all, this show was from a time before the girl power trope metastasized its way into Hollywood. It's fascinating how the pursuit of countering sexism came to the expense of good writing for female characters.

Yeha 100% agree, when Anne gets the best of a much larger guy in a fight, it's believable, she fights dirty. And she's hot, unrelated but even with the angry face, she's so hot

Very good points here. This show had homosexuality, strong women without beating it over your head like they do now and without emasculating the men. Thats part of hollywood's agenda it seems - girl boss / wimpy man
they're both so pretty.
The threesome scene was so hilarious. Anne's expressions when she notices Max and Jack getting intimate were priceless. Her face was like "the fuck's going on here?!?"

I like how she gets a bit jealous after. Some people think that she is no longer attracted to Jack after she gets on with Max, but it's clear she has feelings for both
Bonny gives you the feeling that she could slit your throat at any moment and in the same time you can feel her love toward Jack , Clara did an awesome job , she gave us the only true badass female character in TV i wish we will see her in other projects very soon

I think all the major female roles in this series were badass. Elenor, Max, the brothel madam, The Maroon queen, Elenor’s grandma... all absolute power house roles.

@@Prog4Prog Yeah man you are right they were all badass characters but what I meant by badass in the case of Boney is that she is the best and the most realistic woman fighter I've ever seen on tv.

@@jinzokrim9979 Oh, I see what you mean! Yeah, she’s a proper pirate wench. What an incredible show and such a shame it stopped at 4, the ending left for an interesting story for 5 what with the introduction to Mary Read to Jack’s crew.

@@Prog4Prog For me it was the best action tv serie I've ever seen , and yes it's a shame that we didn't have another seasons but I am also glad that they didn't ruin it like other tv shows ... But that being said it's still hope for us to get the Treasure Island tv shows since Black Sail could be considered as it's Prequel ^^

I think what makes her so badass, is that she's realistic. She isn't a fantasy assassin, whose a hardened fighter, but looks like a model at the same time. She looks the part if you know what I mean.
Wow Clara Padget is absolutely stunning. This is the best series on TV without a doubt.

How the hell did Toby pull off that beautiful polished British accent - Whoa, that was super impressive - EVERYTHING he did was impressive but I wish he did more fighting than relying on Ann for all the kills and dirty work. I LOVED her!!

I think that should have been unbelievable but wasn't was that many of the characters seem extremely educated but a lot of people think the stereotype of pirates is they're all a bunch of idiot brutes but that wasn't true. The idiot brute pirate cruise were always the first ones to lose and be erased from history. You don't even know the names of all the bad pirates because they died quickly
both looked rugged and soiled as pirates but legendary. and as a modern person in this interview they're stunningly flawless. hahaaa the contrast they can truly make a persona out of their true selves. great actors.
Toby without sideburns took me a second to recognize him lol

Great questions on the interviewer's part! They really got the actors talking about interesting and deeper aspects of the show and the actors really seemed to enjoy this one. Really professional : D
What was always so interesting to me about Ann Bonny is that she's so cagey. Like, she seems for all the world as something of a combination between furtive and brutish. Quiet, unfriendly, reserved, prone to acts of physical violence. Kind of like a snake. She wants to be left alone and when people don't leave her alone, she bites them. But then she has this intriguing relationship with Jack Rackam, and later with Max, and it makes you wonder what's going on inside her head.
I honestly though I would hate this show because of Michael Bay and I am honestly super impressed at how great the show really is!

Malcolm Reynolds i think one of the best things about the show is; that they had a story to tell, it started and ended perfectly, leaving us wanting more, but knowing that more wouldnt have been a good thing. Which is sad for the show and the actors, and us. Heres to hoping they do treasure island series at some point in the future, in the meantime im going to rewatch the series and pay a lot more attention to everything happening in the background, as i was so focused on the main characters and watching them id love to pay more attention to the scenery haha

Its amazing how different, normal Toby looks in this Interview. He have a complett different Mimic when he play Jack Rackham.

Alexander Angelus I think they’re more talking about the world they live in as being very patriarchal, and even with Eleanor running the island, a lot of the pirates freaking hate her.
That Toby is a Daddy. Yum 😋
Black Sails was a fantastic through and through, but let's not pretend that Anne fancying Max wasn't the most predictable thing since Billy surviving his fall.
how tf can you have the most posh accent ever and then have the trashiest accent in the show
I want more Max and Bonny. Romantically. Bonny is better for Max than Eleanor ever was. If Mary Read does come into the picture, it should be JackxMary. Keep Bonny and Jack platonic, they were never romantic in the show in my opinion, simply co-dependent. Even Anne says toward the end of the season "It's different with Max, I'm not your wife Jack, we're simply partners." If they bring Mary in, let her be Jack's romantically. Just my two cents.

no Max needs to be with her future husband John Silver, just like the book implies, Anne can bang Reed and then they can be in a crap plot together.
