Black Russian & White Russian Cocktails | Jamie Oliver

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

You may know a version of the White Russian cocktail as The Dude's favourite drink in cult classic 'The Big Lebowski', but allow Jamie to show you how to make the classic version properly. Alongside the White Russian, Jamie will show you its little brother - the Black Russian cocktail. Both drinks are similar in composition, made with Grey Goose vodka, coffee liqueur and cream in the case of the White Russian, but they have very different tastes. Try them both and make sure you let us know which you prefer. Sponsored by Bacardi.

I like a Black Russian variant where I replace the coffee liquor with vodka, and also replace the ice with vodka. And sometimes I replace the vodka with gin.

The white Russian is one of my favorites especially during Christmas. If I'm making a lot of them for my family, I'll use Absolut Vodka, Kahlua, half and half cream. Also, to make it fancy, I'll grate chocolate from a Toblerone on top of the cocktails, top it off by adding a chocolate straw or wafer stick to the cocktails.

Back in high-school we used to make "Green Russians". We just replaced vodka for absinth. It was quite different tasting, with a hint of liquorice. Also sometimes we'd do a "Broke Black Russian" where we just mixed vodka and coffee as hangover cure. Good times :')

That's funny. I remember my mom watching Jamie on TV when I was a kid. She told me she learnt so many things thanks to these shows and that was one of the reasons she was able to cook us the (delicious) meals we had everynight. Today I'm about as old as her when she was in front of the TV and like her, I'm perfecting my (poor) cooking skills and learning a lot of other useful things and tips by watching Jamie's videos. Who knows, maybe my future children will do the same ? x) Thank you so much Jamie, you're the best :).

I think cinnamon could work as well. I made a cocktail a few days ago called the Gin alexander (tastes just like the white russian in my opinion) which uses Gin, Dark Creme De Cacao (I used White Creme De Cacao slight mix up on my part), and Cream (I used half & half) than for garnish grated Nutmeg. I couldn't find any Nutmeg so I used cinnamon instead worked really well.

I like Black Russians, but for me I always do a variation of it. First of all, I make my own coffee liqueur; most of coffee liqueurs have a huge "artificial" taste. You just need some coffee beans and a nice vodka or grain alcohol, leave it infuse for 30 days and then add simple syrup. The trick here is balance how much of coffe taste and bitternes you want, how much sweet you want. There's some recipes, but I think that quality control is better when you make it tasting and balancing in real time. Then, 25 ml of this nice coffee liqueur and 50 ml of Jack Daniel's or some bourbon you like on an old fashioned glass filled with ice. Add an orange zest (it's incredible how orange flavour goes perfect with bourbon and coffee) and that's it. I call it "The Black Tenneessean". THE BLACK TENNESSEAN 25 ml coffee liqueur 50 ml Jack Daniel's Stir on an old fashioned glass full of ice and garnish with orange zest

In Ireland black russians come topped up with coke and sometimes even a Guinness head. Queue confusion when I worked in a bar in Canada and had a black russian sent back 3 times because "it just tasted of coke" before my supervisor and I had a debate on the drink having coke at all. Made it right for the customer and then spent the night proving I wasn't crazy by sending my supervisor links to the Irish version.

***** Those two cocktails are my all time favorites. But my Withe Russian it's somewhat different, i use vanilla ice cream instead of milk and same quantities of coffee and vodka. Have it a try.

Instead of plain creme, something like Bailey's, or McCormick. Even seasonal irish creme like Pumpkin spice.

I made these last night and was curious about weather or not mint or a little lime would work with this drink.

Sounds ok. But I like my version better from years ago - kaluha, vodka on ice topped up with Coke. Or kaluha vodka and baileys on ice Yum! 😆
