    Great video Mark, I have a 50 caliber Springfield Hawken, 1-66 twist, that a buddy of mine found in an old barn he was tearing down well, to say it was in rough shape would be an understatement !! He let me have it for 20 bucks, she's a beauty now !!!! I've got a Jukar 45 caliber Kentucky rifle, that was a ugly red color but, now she's a beautiful dark walnut color, I got at a yard sale for 75 bucks, never been shot, he had it as a wall hanger over his fireplace, sweet shooting little gun !! Wish I knew how to put pictures here in the comment section, thank you for representing "the common man" !!

    Another good vid, I know on some of the forums the custom gun guys like to talk down about Pedersoli but the 3 I own and every other I know about works flawlessly. Really tempted to buy another this year, think a .54 frontier flinter is on the horizon.

I also still practice every weekend with my Hawken rifles and with my Alamo (Kentucky rifle) from Pedersoli. I tried making cap primers from new white tip green diamond matches, nullb and alcohol wetted, scrubbed off brown striker with alcohol spritz sprayer to wash into the slurry. I overfilled 7 caps. Let them dry a bit. When I went to scrape the tiny bowel- KERPOPFZZZ! WELL THAT WORKED to scent my batch of bread! Hoho.the caps were too rounded, damp and high on nipples, but 5 outa 7 went off! Very cool, Mark. I own 3 bp rifles. All are percussion. The first is a T/C Hawken in 50 caliber. The next is a T/C Renegade in 45 caliber. The next is a CVA Optima in 50 caliber. Now, years ago (1982) I'd built a CVA 45 caliber Kentucky Rifle kit and I took my first antelope with it. This last Spring, I ordered a Traditions 50 caliber Kentucky Rifle Kit. I'd like to relive that experience of building one again. I sold my first one, Heaven knows why! One day, I'll put up a video of the long guns. Got a couple T/C Hawkens, 45&50, 50 is a kit I built back in the 70’s when I was a teen, the 45 I bought recently needed ALOT of TLC, refinish, restoration, have to replace that lock.(not the bargain I thought). There are some good production guns out there. Too bad Thompson Center and CVA no longer make traditional muzzle loaders. Just be careful when buying one used in say, a pawn shop. You need to know a little to be sure you are getting a gun that is in shooting condition. Trust me..I work in a gun shop and I have seen muzzle loaders brought in that I wouldn't have shot if you paid me to shoot them. Thanks for the video.

    The lock on the gun before was worn out. The sear was so worn, the cock wouldn't stay in the full position. That accidental tripping was getting dangerous. My friend Barry is going to rebuild it someday. Meanwhile, the lock in the video is from a junked 36 caliber Pedersoli .

    I bought a Lyman GPR in caplock in 1980. I still have it, along with a 1979 Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle. Both in .50 cal. Other BP guns have come and gone, but I will never get rid of those two. I ordered the flint conversion kit for the TMR, but it didn't fit. I sold the lock to someone and forgot about it. Years later, I ordered another, but it didn't fit either. Dixie said I was wrong, but I wasn't. It wasn't even close. The only thing that matched was the basic shape of the lock plate, but the mainspring was much too wide to fit into the cutout and the single lock screw hole was obviously nowhere near the place where it needed to be. Removing enough wood to gain depth for the mainspring was out of the question. Very dissapointed with Dixie.

  • @OutnBacker

    @OutnBacker

    Жыл бұрын

    @@blackpowdermaniacshooter No. I gave up. This happened about 20 years ago. There is no way that lock was made for the TMR. I've been doing this since I was 18, never touched a cartridge arm til I was 34. I know as much about flinchlocks as there is to know when it comes to making them go poof. One thing, though: The lock they sent was the one that had the "weather resistent" pan - not the one usually seen on the TMR. This one had an arched casting the went from the frizzen pivot to the L with a cupped "cap" that closed over the pan. Normally, that casting is straight and there is no matching "cap" over the pan. It was the only lock they advertised as fitting the TMR. Like I said, the lock plate was right, but the depth of the spring held it away from seating and the threaded hole for the screw was off by about 3/8". Not the right lock. I'll see if I can find it in the catalog and give you the model number...

    @@blackpowdermaniacshooter Just as I thought: Dixie does not offer a current flintlock conversion kit for the TMR anymore. Dixie has been fading for years, IMO. They used to have just about every item you could imagine. If thier customer service has been good for you, I'm glad, but I just gave up. BTW, I'm not a hard guy to deal with. I don't get snippy with people on the phone. The lady was very nice. I just walked away.

    That is a very difficult question to answer. Are you wanting a large caliber gun? Small caliber gun? A smoothbore? For factory rifles...Pedersoli makes some of the better ones available. Traditions makes some entry level rifles to start with. Abe's General Store in Pennsylvania carries Pedersoli and Tradition models. Call them at (814) 271-0474 to see what's available. Kits are available if you're interested in building from a kit. The Kibler flintlocks can be assembled in a weekend and will be a "but once, Cry Once" flintlock rifle. The Kibler gun will be a lifetime gun. You can check out his guns at: kiblerslongrifles.com/collections/rifle-kits Hope this helps you get started finding one you are interested in, thanks for watching.
