My list is very similar. But I didn't like Beyond the sea, White Christmas was too sad for my liking, and I rated San Junipero as number 1
I really enjoyed Hang the DJ. It was a simple, well-acted and emotionally resonant story that's stayed in my mind long after the credits rolled. The tech was also eerily plausible, though obviously a bit exaggerated for dramatic impact. It was sad to see it so far down on your list.

Me too! It would be in my top 5 I would say. I’m normally pretty good at guessing endings but I didn’t see this one coming at all and it made me cry and stuck with me
I go back and watch "Hated in the Nation" fairly regularly. It feels so different from most other episodes cause of it's pacing, it's by far the longest episode and is constantly adding new elements to the story. It feels like a movie. I also loved Fifteen Million Merits, it was the first episode I saw and is still the most memorable.

Same here. I've watched Hated in the Nation several times
I always rank "Shut Up And Dance" high because that was the episode that got me fully into Black Mirror and I had to go back and watch the other episodes. It made me realise that when you watch Black Mirror the people you follow are misleading you and they're usually the villains in the end. Speaking of misleading you and being the villain in the end "Beyond The Sea" is probably my favorite. Aaron Paul did wonderful.

I actually watched Striking Vipers first, because when you click on it for the first time it brings up the most recent season's first episode, and at the time season 5 was still young. I actually loved the episode and immediately realized it was the wrong season so I went back and binged it. Even though it is not my favorite and I know it is not the greatest episode, it is still one I can revisit and enjoy.

What I like about this show is that I'm never, ever able to predict how it'll go. Like in Beyond the Sea, I thought the other guy was going to kill Aaron Paul's character, maybe by leaving him outside the capsule, and also lie to the wife, trying to pass himself off as her husband. But she catches on when she hears him humming one of the records he liked to play.

It’s strange that out of all the episodes, you note Beyond the Sea as particularly unpredictable. As soon as Josh Hartnett’s character had his family murdered, and it kept switching between showing us his family and Aaron Paul’s charcater’s family, I knew where it was going. Which is why I supposed I don’t really like it. It just felt unrewarding when I had to watch a plot unfold for 90 minutes that I had guessed in the first 10. Plus there are logistical inadequacies and plot holes in there that kind of ruin the immersion for me.

Playtest is my absolute favorite because of the the many plottwists. It got to a moment which I got actually scared and was so unsure of the reality of the show, and then when I was sure, they cracked it again. Also the kind of mystery going on between the character and his parents are really engaging even tho it wasn't fully elaborated which makes it even cooler to me (I also like some horror)

It might not be my favorite episode ( Def a top 10 maybe top 5), but the ending is still my favorite ending. The fact that he died within 0.04 sec. before he even got to the mole game is crazy. Also, when you are about to die, your neurons do all fire in rapid succession and can simulate hallucinations and false sensory observations like the ones he had. So that just adds to the whole thing. I don't think he had those experiences because of the machine, I think that was his neurons all firing in hundreds of a second and him hallucinating it all. Still terrifying. The brain is a crazy thing.

My favorite thing about Playtest is that in a rewatch, if you are wearing headphones, you can hear a phone vibrating incorporated into the music. I go back and watch White Christmas all the time the story was well constructed and it all paid off to an amazing ending. That episode along with The Entire history of you are the two episodes I recommend to other people to watch no matter what. They do the best at mixing the technology with the story and imo have to best endings in all of Blackmirror. Overall good list I definitely have a different list then yours 3-28 but you got the two most important ones at the top.
I liked “Shut Up and Dance” because of how they try to make you think one thing and the twist changes the whole story where he turns out to be a pedophile. Beyond the Sea is my next episode that I’m going to recommend everyone to watch. I just love when they make you think he was going to lock him outside of the ship to die and secretly take over his body only to have a completely unexpected twist at the end that gives me chicken skin while the credits roll.

I think it was obvious David wouldn't let Cliff die because Cliff himself told his wife they needed eachother because their mission was designed for 2 earlier in the episode, otherwise David could've just stabbed him while he was laying on that bed. I think It would've been darker if they landed on a planet with enough resources to live but instead of doing research and going back to earth, David killed Cliff and started pretending he was him on earth or if Cliff's wife simply accepted the fact that David was dead and didn't care because she fell in love with David. There was no reason for David to go back so he could just wake up to eat and go back lol.

Yeah, it was pretty damn obvious that he was going to kill the family. My ‘fix’ would have been to show a scene after the final one, where the two of them, while still loathing one another, are mutually cooperating to work the ship and have an agreed roster to use the body, because there’s no other choice other than mutual destruction.
Great rankings! I especially agree with the bottom 3. And ty for ranking White Bear so high. That’s my fav episode and it’s the one that got me onto the show because my dad was explaining the plot and I thought it sounded cool af so I watched and the rest is history.

Glad you agree with the top part! Yeah it's a difficult ranking as there are so many good episodes!
i think smithereens is one of the best by far, because of how much i and many of us can relate to the characters views, the concept is already much of a reality and i cant help but empathise with the main character as i strongly agree with him
The one pattern about season 6 that I noticed is that it entirely steers clear of its traditional, prophetic dystopian slant on the abuse of technology in the future. Almost every episode goes back in time and/or has completely abandoned the dystopian sci-if element in favor of more fantasy/supernatural type themes. Like a lot of Black Mirrors previous seasons focusing on dystopian sci-fi creative predictions have almost caught up to where we are today, obviously not literally but in concept and direction we’re not to far from some dystopian milestones. Most of the episodes were good for what they were and I accept that a show doesn’t have to be what I expect exactly. But admittedly, I would’ve been more interested to see episodes set in 2060 challenging Elon Musk’s theory about the singularity. I mean transhumanism with tech is literally being discussed right now. What would that look like in the next decades? Joan is awful is probably the closest to discussing a near future and even this episode confines itself to Netflix making itself the butt of anything antagonistic…Not to be all conspiracy theorist, but as I was going through each episode and noticing how almost all were set in the past..it did almost seem like the traditional approach Black Mirror always took was sort of avoided and abandoned altogether as not to offend tech companies or at least portray them in a bad light to the public as they are literally inventing things at a rate right now that might take us to a dystopian future…idk, it’s a stretch of thinking for sure. But just am sharing this comment because nobody’s discussed this angle yet and maybe others took notice?

Can't rank them all but best from each season. The National Anthem. White Bear. Shut Up and Dance. USS Callister. Smithereens. Loch Henry. White Bear and Shut Up and Dance standing out the most. Always a gut punch. The Waldo Moment was probably the only episode that really disappointed me, rather dull and the ending had me rolling my eyes. Enjoyed all your breakdowns of this season. Hope we don't have to wait too long for the next one.
there's a few episodes in season 6 where i felt like the emotional impact suffered for the sake of comedy or cheap shock value. however, all of the episodes were incredibly fun to watch and it was really entertaining to laugh about some of the absurd choices (for example the werewolf thing) even though it took away from the underlying theme. it definitely felt more flat and light-hearted though, maybe except for the loch henry episode.
Striking Vipers is so thought provoking though

Oh definitely!
Yo the doctor story in black museum seriously freaked me out and that’s not easy to do
This whole season 6 felt more like twilight zone than your typical black mirror episodes except for ep 1 & 3
san junipero is my fav. but over all this list is really on point :)

It's such a good one! Good choice!
List is very similar to mine except I have White Christmas at 1 and Entire History of You at 2. I put Black Museum a little higher and Be right back a little lower. Other than that our list would be almost identical.

I don’t watch Black Mirror for twists - there’s episodes people love without a shocking twist (Nosedive, San Junipero, USS Calistar) so while there was some predictability, I don’t think an episode should get deducted points for that.

In "Shut up and dance" while he is talking to the girl, in the background you can hear the song "Thats the way I like it"
I was so anxious waiting your rank on The Entire History of You, and I so agreed it deserves to be number one

I liked Crocodile. How she just went home with her chaos. I also liked The National Anthem; my Black Mirror screen saver. I loved Mazey Day's concept of weaponized cameras. Loch Henry went to another level. The entire History of You and Beyond the Sea, bored me to death, because it was so expected I mean common theme, but its amazing to see the kind of music that the world's hearts string to. Playtest,,,, Yeeez loved it. San Junipero made me feel.

They're three very good episodes
Brooker has said in interviews that Liam was in fact the father of their child with Fi, not Jonas... making his emotional breakdown that ultimately pushed them both away from him all the more tragic
San Juniperos concept reminds me of the Amazon Original Series Upload
This is inspiring me to watch The Waldo Moment again, now that I feel like North America is living it.
While I wouldn’t have ordered it quite like this, I love that we appreciate the same thing about Black Mirror; the way technology can impact society in negative ways. That’s why I kind of didn’t love this new season. It felt a little weird imo AI and the pandemic should have been easy topics to tackle. Idk what that wolf shit was and tbh I didn’t like Demon 79 either lol Anyway, good list!

i thought demon 79 was good, and while it wasn't black mirror really, the show was conscious about that and called it a "red mirror" episode. but mazey day SUCKS
I haven't watched every episode of Black Mirror, but already seen a great bunch so my ranks so far: 1st - Nosedive 2nd - Be Right Back 3rd - San Junipero 4th - The National Anthem 5th - Joan is Awful 6th - Loch Henry 7th - Demon 79 8th - Beyond the Sea 9th - Smithereens 10th - Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too 11th - Mazey Day 12th - The Waldo Moment - In regards to Mazey Day, Charlie Brooker actually originally was going to label it as Red Mirror like Demon 79, so season 6 would've had 3 Black Mirror stories and 2 Red Mirror stories. However, given that the werewolf twist is the twist with the story and labeling Mazey Day a Red Mirror story might spoil it, Brooker decided to label it as a Black Mirror episode to hide it. That said, Mazey Day had a really great and interesting concept about paparazzis and celebrity privacy, but what made it a missed potential was the mere fact it's one of the shortest Black Mirror episodes, thus the story became too shallow and characters weren't really fleshed out and given dimension, with Bo and Mazey Day herself being the only really interesting characters in the episode, Hector could've been fleshed out (a shame since it's Danny Ramirez and he really love to be in Black Mirror). The werewolf twist is divisive, but it's honestly not the most problematic part of the episode, especially given the purpose of it. - As for Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too, I think you could've given Miley Cyrus credit for her performance as Ashley as she understood the character and most especially Ashley echoes Miley's own personal experience as a celebrity when she was working under Disney and being Hannah Montana. Miley Cyrus and Andrew Scott definitely had one of the best performances in Black Mirror season 5 and the show overall. It's a shame how season 5 turned out looking all 3 episodes as from what I've seen with 2 of the 3 episodes I've seen in season 5, it's clear that the depiction of technology was so shallow and came off too much of "tech is bad" and with Charlie Brooker recently voicing his frustration of people only perceiving Black Mirror as just a showing saying "tech is bad" when Black Mirror has always been about the human nature and society that the stories show our reflection as people and society, a black mirror. Because of season 5's reception and Brooker feeling frustrated with that perception of Black Mirror, it's clear and very understandable as to why season 6 turned out. - You may need to rethink of Joan is Awful a bit more as this particular episode was WAY TOO TIMELY, it may be similar to how you felt about Smithereens. Joan is Awful is a very eerie echo of the writers and actors' strike going on in Hollywood and studios' willingness to use AI to exploit celebrities. The studios even blatantly are willing to drive the creatives homeless, like they're saying them to "go fuck themselves" like how Streamberry told Salma Hayek to "go fuck herself". Again, rather timely and heavily relevant now
My favorites are Crocodile, 15 million merits, white bear, metalhead, shut up and dance and white Christmas

My personal favorites are The Entire History of You, Be Right Back, Shut Up and Dance, USS Callister, Hang the DJ, and Beyond the Sea

It is a great episode with a fantastic ending!
Quite surprised with the ranking of Beyond The Sea as I've seen many people call it the best or second best episode BY FAR, which I slightly agree with, but White Christmas and The Entire History Of You will always be my top two (personally I have WC over TEHOY atm)

Really? Everyone I've seen has been saying it's an alright episode that ranks about third in season 6. Personally I felt the acting was amazing and the slow feel of it was cool but the ending just felt really mediocre and really pulled the episode back.
For me white Christmas is bar far the best episode, and one of the best things I've ever seen on TV

I'd actually place San Junipero close to the very top, in part because I went in blind and was completely blown away by the twist. I'd also argue that the only watchable thing in Mazey Day was Zazie Beetz, and without her the episode would have been totally unwatchable.
@BrainPilot

Yeah i'd agree - Zazie Beetz was great!
I think the best BM episodes are those in which you can clearly see character development (more often a downward spiral) due to the technology so I totally agree with your top choices. USS callister is always my personal favourite though. And if you are doing another best performances, please include Aaron Paul in the top 5. He was the highlight of that episode!
In the episode, loch Henry, am I the only one who thought that she was going to write “forgive me” and was then stunned to read it as “for your film”?

I agree! Felt like commentary on more modern technology which was interesting to see. Parents these days can track their children’s phones and put cameras in their children’s rooms. Of course modern tech like that can be helpful but I love that Arkangel follows the story of what overprotective & controlling parents can do with this kind of technology.
I don't think Mazey day is that bad especially compared to some other ones at the bottom of your list, yeah it has issues and it left a lot to be desired, I wish the run time was longer because it definitely needed it more than Loch Henry and Beyond the Sea, and they could've fleshed out the story more. Yeah the Paparazzi thing got overshadowed by the werewolf thing but it's the one episode of the season that keep coming back to my mind, because thinking about it more the whole werewolf thing it's an allegory for how the paparazzi treat celebrities like animals and people love Demon 79 (including me, its my favorite season 6 episode) so with a lot more time it could've been a great episode even with the supernatural angle. Since some episode that barely have any tech at all are really good like my favorite Shut up and dance and like national anthem. And some episode that have technology can be pretty meh or don't even focus more on the cool technology like hang the dj, or most if not all the episode of season 5.
@shosc16

Interesting take. I think Mazey Day belongs to the bottom not because it's not "Black mirror esque" - but the story is quite weak. It feels like things happen for the sake of happening, even though the premise is interesting with the paparazzi. In a top list like this you have to compare it with other episodes and when you compare the stories it's very lacklustre. Why did the actress need to be in Czech Republic? How did she make it back to the US? The main character doesn't really piece anything together cos her connections just lead her to the right place each time. its not awful, just compared to the others its as is.
I gotta say, your top choice is the one episode I've refused to ever watch again because of the pain I felt watching him go through that. Probably why it deserves the spot tbh

That and Nosedive for me. I could rewatch both of those many times.
I used to have a list before S6 but I lost it so... I'll just say that for me the TOP episodes in no particular order are: San Junipero Nosedive Shut Up and Dance White Bear 15 Million Merits and Bandersnatch. White Christmas and Be Right Back are great too. But most of them are quite good. Except the Miley Cyrus one.
