When they were first jamming out John L it was nothing but the breakdown section. Check out live performances from 2019. The opening jam from Live on Canal St, and the outro to Of Schlagenheim from the Windmill show w/ cowboy hats (check Lou Smith's channel) are notable examples. The riff they ended john L with at that windmill show also ended up becoming Sugar/Tzu. Very much feels like the black midi theme song at this point

I love Black Midi so much. I was lucky enough to see them this year during Pitchfork... And oh my god My face was melted. I haven't seen a crowd get so excited since I've seen Deathgrips Not only this, but the energy and performance by black Midi were like no other I was moshing and jumping around, having the time of my life And, I was actually lucky enough to meet them, and tell them that they were the highlight of my summer Greep felt super appreciative and gave me the biggest handshake ever, what a great dude I'm seriously floored with how awesome this band is
