@@PSEUDOSOPHER I live in new mexico where black mesa is supposed to be located. we do not have cactus foliage here like you would see in Arizona. Its close, but not that close to get all that kind of vegetation. Personally i think the outside is improved and also kind of oversaturated a bit

If I can handle the Xen rock models just fine, then the same treatment for Surface Tension should be just fine. Love to see that they are still perfecting whatever they can from a detail standpoint even if it may seem unnecessary.

39:12 The Old one is more like a trap for the player. The New one is a lot more like a trap just for Gordon.

@@Orbusprime Way out if you are done with the assassins, but the thing that most people miss is.. you are usually there for a long time... trying to stay alive on 5 or 10 hp, barely killing them 1 by one (AND running away from them all the time) Seeing Health and Armor while you are in a heavy fight.. is the better attraction. Yea, if you are done killing them and it's been a horrible long fight.. seeing a way out might be better. It's honestly kind of hard to say, but i do think a way out might be more fitting and logical.

The best part about the new rocks is that now the cliffside map has a smoother transition to skybox and you can barely tell what's the map and what's the skybox making the world feel more real and one piece.

The new rocks are great, only 1 or 2 places i found them sticking out and not fitting. Either because they look too detail and the rest was kind of worse or because they mixed then with the old rocks that look blurry. In general the new rocks are super good tho :P You are right about the skybox on that place

21:00 I like that with the addition of lights being very important in that level, the guards now have tactical night vision. Very small but great detail. Honestly, this entire update has been a blessing. From the start of the game release to this final update, they put a LOT of heart into the game. Kind of sad now that this is the final update aside from ones that are for additional bugs and the sort. Great video

Indeed, the night vision, the light sticks and flares.. they are all military stuff and fit great for that level. And yea, it's sad that this is the end... but what an end right? If you go out, go out with a bang as they say :D Black Mesa was amazing from start till the end

The night vision was there since the original mod, the models are mostly rng but the odds of the night vision goggles may have had a higher chance to appear in that chapter though.

I did, and told all my friends to do it (also mention it on youtube :P) obviously a few hundred people wasnt enough sadly ;/ Black Mesa really deserved it. The mod was out many years ago, then they kept on developing the game to make it even better.

The reason the shadows seem weird is because the flashlight is on the chest of the HEV suit, below your head. Therefore the shadows appear to cast upwards a bit.

Well, that and, uh... the shadows very literally being 3D models above the objects. This is why when you kill a headcrab in a vent, as you get closer to it, you literally have to walk through it's increasingly large shadow and it blocks your view entirely while you do so.

In case you didn’t know, at 17:00 the drop off is a reference to the beginning of the original Power Up chapter in Half-Life, where you also crush a table and kill a unfortunate headcrab in the process.

Much improved. Games are far too care bear bright these days. If your a stuck in a hallway with the lights flickering off without a light source and a zombie is charging you, you damn well shouldn't be able to see. Sometimes you receive greater stimulation from what you cannot see. I will be increasing the darkness even further in reshade with Fake HDR so this game should be a proper zombie horror experience.

Doom 3 had nothing on this game xD You are right, as much as i dont love the darkness, it not only fits but it was scary and creepy at times. Id rather feel that than feel like its just another bright game without any danger to me.

cliff and backgroud+ cactuses - contrasts are at the edge of being overblown

Wishlist for more fixes: Power Up -Missing the Bullsquid that pulls a corpse through a crack in a wall, right now its just eating a guy in front of a tipped shelf. -The water in the blocked generator room is clear. It should be too dirty to see through so zombies can pop out and surprise the player. -The marines that descend on the platform just stand around if they don't detect the player. In the original they walk off the platform and search regardless of whether they see you. Surface Tension -Bring back the goddamn cacti, dude. C'mon.

Same here, every update pulls me back in again :P It's not just cus i'm a fan, it's also cus they keep adding a lot of new things, especially in this update. Before this one, it was the Xen update.. before that one, it was the final source mod update.. I guess this is the last time tho, the final huge update. P.s. Thanks for the subscribe btw, i got more than 4, but its not a million for sure xD It's just hidden cus people judge the low subscriber count too much so i got tired of it lol.

@@Legion849 We are blessed to even have this. I doubt Valve would have ever done this. The Source engine still remains one of the best, even if its not the best anymore. Sadly almost nobody uses it. Its all Unreal Engine now (which is also not bad but gives a game a different feel)

Its harder to see where enemies are with so much vegetation. Also sometimes it looks strange like at 4:21. The foilage sticks out like a sore thumb. In some places it looks better and in other places its just so cluttered. Adding more props to a scene doesnt mean it gets better. It can be harder to read as a level.

Thats true, i had some problems too. Hard to see the little face huggers and the doggies at some places. In general, i agree... altho i do like it lol.

I liked most of the changes, also the video works as a good HL/BM music mix lol extra kudos for sync the music with the video. they really hate cactuses in definitive edition.

Yea, its fun to do it that way :P Not always syncs well tho, cus my old CPU bugs out the video sometimes (alot of freezing during editing lol) P.s. I found many hidden cactuses in my next video (the 1 i'm still making) :D So its not all lost!

Adding more vegetation seems small but it made a big difference in the landmine level. the mines were too easy to see. That is *definitely* fixed.

Yea, they mix with the mines now.. all the grasses and stuff. Its actually hard to notice the mines now. Good point! I usually just throw a bomb tho ;p If you were to shoot them down.. yea, then its a big problem :P

YOU SHOULD! Its way better and cooler now. TONS of new changes. Mostly for the better. Just missing the bloom effect on the toxic green goo. It looked more radio active in the 2015 version.

Hey, just wanted to get your advice, is black mesa definitive edition better suited for performance? The PC I have meets most of the recommended specs but the new version obviously looks better so is it going to decrease performance due to better graphics or increase performance due to better optimisation? The older versions were easier to run on my old Laptop. Thats all i can tell ya. You could change some settings in game and see if it helps, but overall.. yeah. The game looks better and has higher system specs. The version i use for my laptop is very old, cus that's the last version that gave me stable 60 fps. I think if you tweak some settings like the shadows, dynamic lights etc... it should be okay.

I'm so hyped to replay this Masterpiece again! I'll just wait for essential Workshop updates (Vent, Expanded Railroad and BMCE) - and then I'm diving in!

A few extra things on the walls. Still looks mostly the same. The new lasers and force fields are all new tho. I will upload it in like 1 hour!

If you buy one game, better be this one and Cyberpunk :D Altho that 1 is worth waiting for.. its too buggy now. Black mesa however is amazing and bugless at this point soooooo get it.

A like the "lets put a happy little bush right here" mindset from the developers. Bob Ross would be proud

39:12 new trap is better because old one would be pointless for gordon but in new one since he was trying to get to the surface it would be more logical to ambush him near a surface hacth

Is it just me, or is this game optimized really badly in the Surface Tension and Xen chapters? Anyone know how to fix this or experiencing the same thing? For reference, I can run Black Ops Cold War on High settings at an average of 80fps, but in some of the Xen chapters, I get 20 frames max on medium settings.

Xen for sure, the surface tension runs okay on my laptop tho. On Xen... oh boy.. 10-15 fps. Rest of the game is 45-60.

I wish they add context options where you can help the Science Team and the Security Team like giving them health kits if they are wounded like the Security guy got hit on the stomach and he was just sitting down and said "you should see the other guy.. on thaf side" i guess that was his script or maybe not but i hope that they will give options to help more people like what i have mentioned, i hope they could add something like that sort of like sideline missions or an option or scene you could help and interact and can save much more lives...

Its amazing how good the source engine can look

I said the same thing over and over again :P Left 4 Dead 2 was really good looking, then Portal 2 blew my mind... and then this. Its a great engine, and this probably is the last game we will see with it (there could be some other mod for Opposing Force in the future but who knows)

CS:GO continues to look better and better on this same engine, and frankly I think it's been benefiting from improvements to VRAD that the Black Mesa team doesn't have access to. The lighting still feels oddly flat in places, and I spotted some props (particularly in the Power Up footage) that look like they're not casting shadows at all.

Yea, more than 30 days and many, many times of crashing and auto restarting because i ran out of Ram lol. Not to mention having to replay the game twice. It was really fun to make tho ;p

"There's nothing here..." Meanwhile Gordon is standing there taking video! :D Also nice music! Is that part of the 1.5 update? I recognized some tracks were from Half Life 2 but the beginning of the video never heard any of those before.

Nop, its just half-life 1 and 2 music, with 1 track from Black Mesa (that 1 is out for 5 years now) Also, ye lol :P They can be just as blind as the stormtroppers XD

I don't know if I have the latest version: if I write down the command "version" in the console (starting the .exe with the parameter "-console"), it returns 100001. Is that the latest one ?

I'm asking that because on Windows 11 + gtx 1650 (yep, Windows 11), the game flickers with little squares on some part of the screen, when it is loading contents (at playing time it works good)

Quick question: I started playing Half-Life 1 three years ago but I never tried to finish. Hell I didn't even finish the second game after 24 hours of playthrough. Should I continue playing the original or is Black Mesa enough? I don't mind the old graphics btw.

If you ask me, finish the original cus its kind of short and then just go to Black Mesa. It will be more epic to see how much they changed and improved. But that comes from someone that finished Half-Life 1 like 50 times and i have always wanted new content ;p If you are kind of okay and fast at FPS games, it shouldn't be a problem. But if Xen bothers you in the original, you could skip it. Its the worst part of the game. The new Xen is lovely, the Black Mesa one.

I uninstalled the game after beating it to free space. But now I'm looking forward to reexperience it again. It's awesome how much love they put to this game to the point that even after almost 15 years of development, insteaf of abandoning it, they still thought "nah we can do better."

@@Starfals That type of cactus is not actually native to New Mexico. As we were tidying up and adding a lot of new, accurate foliage, we decided to tidy that up wherever we saw it!

If I were to pick one gripe with the graphics, it's that the player's flashlight probe is positioned so low that even after the update, it still tends to cause props to look like their shadows are hovering above them. It was apparently a deliberate design decision. Pared with the low refresh rate of the shadows, I personally find it distracting enough to have dynamic shadows turned off entirely. (There are console commands that do allow me to change the position of the flashlight but not its angle without also locking the flashlight in place, revealing that it is hardcoded to point about 10-15 degrees upwards, which hurts my neck.)

I got a wild hair up my ass the other day and decided to reinstall and play through BM again, and I wasnt expecting so many fantastic changes. Amazing work by the team, the game is even more impressive than before!

Some of these looks great, while others don't. I honestly think you should do something about these: 3:05 I think the old workspace looked messier. It suits the whole situation with the invasion going on. 4:05 The rocks to the right looked better in the old version. New version looks blurry in comparison. Right at the crowbar. 4:24 The plants are nicely spread in the old version. Also, being in such a high place, sun would dry out the plants and leave them darker and more dried out, than the overgrown green fresh look on the right. 5:45 In general, like previously stated, i think the general color of the green is too bright. Would maybe look better, if they were a darker. Considering that its somewhere in the desert, my impression would be that less plants would likely grow. This is a little too much IMO. All around i also think the cactus' suits the environment better. A damn shame they were removed from so many spots. 6:26 Just like at 4:05 i think the old rocks were better. New ones look way too blurry when youre close too them. They work better at distance. Also, the brighter the rope looks, the cleaner it looks, considering this bridge is the only way of crossing, i'd make it look darker and more worn. I think the old view beats the new one. 22:24 Worse water effects indeed. Even the flare is smoking underwater. It looks flat. More like fog. Maybe im wrong about the overgrown vegitation. When i think of vegitation in the desert, i think of it like on the new pic at 8:12, and not like on the new pic at 6:50. Good job on fixing the lights in areas without power! Adds much more to it ! :) Just my 2 cents. Great work on the update though ! :) Will there be a way of being able to switch versions?

Great points and from what i can tell, many people seem to share them and think that way. Btw, the cacti were removed because the real world location of Black Mesa doesn't really have them. It fits more, but sadly.. they will be missed :( Again, you are even right about this, cus even i think that way : When everyone thinks of a desert the 2 things that pop up in their minds are - Cactus + Sand

Well, at least that explains why the Marines have green, grey and white camo... IN THE FUCKING DESERT !!

1: most of the science team where in the facility because the alien apocalypse isn't a good excuse to get sizzled like bacon so desert camo isn't necessary. 2: their cammands are to k.o.s. the entire facility and stealth isn't really necessary. 3: they blend in with the crates and concrete of the indoors alright.

Can I ask ya a simple question...how did you make these collapses video shots, when the old one is fading out, while the new one remains, how did you get to the same locations?

I bought and played through the entire thing on Steam this past week, the first time I played this since the initial mod release in 2012. I was very surprised. It's a very good release and they did a great job

Yea, people are super split about it. Half of the people love how much more grassy stuff they have added Half of the people think less is more, and that they over did it :p and like 1 % think both (im in that 1 %) xD

What do you use for the transitions? They look so clean

That's funny because so many people told me that they don't like them haha. (altho, quite a few also did enjoy them) I'm using a few apps, but mainly sony vegas and wondershare. I try to mix the transitions (and a few effects that i use for transitions) of both apps into 1 video and it works well

or devs that hate how i'm showing their murderous killing spree xD Kidding, the devs are the nices people that i have met online!

There's also a change in the security room in office complex where there used to be a magnum but is now replaced by an early shotty with a butt load of shells, which I was kinda confused and a bit sad about. Sure turning vortigaunts into gibs is fun but I'll be missing out on my 360 noironsights with the magnum.

Yea, i remember those missing parts. Right now i can't recall cus i think i got the mod that adds those back... so I'm not 100 % sure. Either they did or i got them with the mod. It is a good question tho.
