Black Mesa: Definitive Edition - 07 - Power Up [Hard]
Ойындар
Chapter 7: Power Up
After killing the Tentacles in Silo D and making his escape through the bottom of the launch tube, Freeman arrives at a transport hub for the old rail system that will supposedly take him to the Lambda Complex. However, before he can make any headway, a deadly new alien creature, the Gargantua, emerges and annihilates the HECU stationed there, plummeting the hub into darkness in the meantime. Gordon must find a way to kill the massive beast and restore power to the hub, while dealing with the remaining HECU who still want him dead.
Playlist with all completed chapters:
• Black Mesa: Definitive...
Notes:
- The Black Mesa Garg differs from its HL1 variant in several ways:
*It lacks the shockwave attack, where it stomps the ground and sends a slow travelling shockwave towards Gordon's position
*It cannot be killed by explosives; it will only flinch slightly and roar in anger
*Its roar in HL1 is shown to be the cause of the ceiling crumbling at 2:46
*It is black in colour, compared to its blue armor in HL1
- Killing the Guard at 3:18 will result in a game over screen, as he is crucial to putting the tram on the right rail at the end of the chapter
- Gordon can pick up the Guard's Magnum for ammo at 3:24
- Gordon can jump down onto the fans at 9:01 instead of taking the stairs
- The piping at 14:23 becomes electrified after killing the Garg, preventing Gordon from returning to the turntable control room (CORRECTION - Gordon can still walk on the pipes and return to the vent drop, albeit sustaining minor electrical damage. Thank you Максим Г. for correcting me on this)
Trivia:
- In HL1, the pipe section that collapses at 0:09 causes Gordon to land directly ontop of a table, squishing a headcrab underneath and sustaining fall damage if he doesn't back up in time.
- The falling pipe sequence (0:09) is part of Chapter 6 (Blast Pit) in HL1, not Chapter 7
- Unlike in HL1, Gordon can't stand ontop of planted tripmines (0:24)
- HECU soldiers will always ignore Gordon during the Garg's intro at 0:35
- The HECU soldier at the bottom right at 0:36 is shown firing an RPG at the Garg. However, he switches to his shotgun right after and Gordon cannot pick up the RPG when he dies
- The Garg destroying the transformers at 0:39 and plunging the hub into darkness is a new feature of the Definitive Edition
- The G-man's 6th appearance at 0:57
- If Gordon hides back in the starting area that the Garg is peeking into at 1:27, the Garg will reach into the alcove and try to burn him, and will only leave if Gordon backs all the way up to the fallen pipe. However, Gordon can also utilize the door he walks past at 0:34 to access the tram garage directly without having to confront it (thanks IronFist for letting me know about this!)
- The two plugs for the static discharge are replaced with breakers in the Definitive Edition (1:42)
- The Garg will burn Gordon if he stays at the static discharge console (1:55)
- You can see the two headcrabs spawning in at 2:26 right before Gordon drops from the vent
- In prior versions of the game, Gordon would've escaped the Garg the first time by entering through the doorway at 2:29
- The walkway at 3:13 will collapse if Gordon goes back across it after reaching the control room
- It is implied that the Guard is still injured due to having used up the First Aid Station's supply at 3:18
- The rail system switchboard at 4:03 is pretty interesting, as it shows that the Silos are in a completely different direction than where Gordon came from, even though he just came from Silo D
- The area at 6:09 was first revealed in the 2008 trailer for the game; Freeman was shown launching an SMG grenade at the fuel tanks and engaging in a shootout with the HECU there
- The fans at 6:31 can blow Gordon back up to the upper levels in HL1
- The flooded basement at 10:06 contained Leeches in HL1, which would chip away at Gordon's health/suit if he ran into them. Leeches are a cut enemy in Black Mesa
- First appearance of a HECU Zombie at 12:41. These were not featured in HL1
- The IV stand that is attached to the HECU zombie at 12:41 can be interacted with even if the zombie is still alive. Gordon can pull the stand away from the zombie as far away from it as he wants, so long as he has space to move. The IV stand also has weird physics and tends to bounce around upon killing the zombie
- At 14:56, the Guard helps Gordon operate the turntable to put him on the right track (literally). In HL1, Gordon had to return to the control room and do it himself
- The pathway at 15:05 is blocked with concrete curbs in HL1, which required Gordon to smash through them with the tram. In HL1, Gordon could also easily skip the entire chapter by building a tripmine staircase right on the concrete curb, allowing him to bypass having to deal with the Gargantua

Power Up was a terrifying experience for me in HL1. The Garg was an intimidating enemy, with its glowing red eye, the way the ground shook when it walked, and the sound its arm cannons made when they fired up. I especially remember that final run for the transformers after restoring the power, with the Garg right on my heels as I made a mad dash for the switch. Killing the beast was immensely satisfying because much like Blast Pit, most of the chapter revolved around figuring out a solution to "How in the hell do I get this thing out of the way?". All of this is still present in Black Mesa, with a new introduction to the creature that is both visceral and cinematic. I do miss the feeling of being chased by it (as Black Mesa greatly reduces the lengths of the corridors that you need to run down to escape it, but this change was intentional, in order to highlight the puzzle solution and what players have to do in a clear and comprehensive manner (also, logically it wouldn't have made sense for the substation to be far away from the turntable room). The game also introduces a new change by way of having the power go down for the first half of the level. Logically, this makes sense as the Garg is shown destroying the transformers, but as a gameplay mechanic, it slows the pace of the game down as players now only have their flashlight to guide them through the lower levels as they try to restore power; anything outside of that is pitch black. This results in tenser encounters with the HECU. It also makes the chapter as a whole that much more memorable and distinct from its HL1 predecessor, while retaining all the elements that worked in the original.

For me it looked differently - some heavily wounded guy who was devoured by a headcrab, while laying in a backroom and awaiting medevac. What a sad way to go, even if HECU are more or less another villains here. @@Sexy_Nutella I guess there were some cases when headcrabs were also dismissed as a low-threat. "Concentrate on big guys, ignore little buggers. Stop wasting ammo on them, they are not a threat. We have helmets, there's no way they can get to our brains" And if you are not Freeman, they are basically instakill for any poor soul unable to see them jumping from behind. I personally love the way that the garg is introduced, even from a 22 year old game it still does certain things better than some modern games. Similar to Blast Pit, the player immediately sees the threat they are up against and learns how they are going to kill it early on. From the starting hallway they can see both that and where they are intended to go. Being on the same level as the garg and watching it incinerate the HECU allows the player to understand how it will attack, but they also feel an immediate need to move fast while it's distracted.

I know I had uploaded a version of this chapter when the public beta first came out for the Definitive Edition, but I wanted to take my time in recreating this for the final release, and highlight the following: * Placing more emphasis on the .357 Magnum and showing it in action, as I haven't had a chance to use it since I first got it at the end of Blast Pit. In particular, I wanted to highlight the one-shot kill nature of it on a successful headshot, and how deadly it can be if the players' aim is dead-on * Making the gameplay more cinematic and smooth than my first go at it * Reducing my tendency to reload every time I fire a shot, to make it more realistic and "up the stakes" when I only have a few bullets left in a mag during a firefight The Garg intro took me the longest to record. It is INCREDIBLY bugged and probably took me close to 300 reloads of the level to get good footage where the HECU and/or Garg wasn't glitching out. I breathed a sigh of relief once I got that done.

Haha yeah. I think it was Sgt. Sarge who commented on that on Chapter 4. It was a good idea and I tried to really tone it down, especially for the Magnum and Pistol. The original Mafia game worked realistically with weapon reloading. When you reload a magazine there, or the bullets in a revolver, you drop it on the ground. The bullets remaining in there didn't just magically return to your spare ammo, you throw them out. That made you be more aware of your ammo. Wish more games would work like this. Reloading after like every 2-3 shots annoy me :D (I don't know if they kept this system for the Definitive Edition, but I have a feeling they did not)

In his walk thru when you first emerge into the main chamber where the Marines are fighting the Gargantua the first place you run to is blocked now by the red blast door! That was the starting point. Now, as you just showed, you must climb along the static discharge cables to drop down into that hallway. I had no idea. Glad I found this video. I was stuck. Also some of the enemies are in different locations. Great playthrough.

Glad I could help out! Yeah, the game has been updated since his playthrough. I loved the changes made to this chapter in particular. Thanks for the kind words!
I was a little unsure about the opening redesign; I found it confusing the first time since I was so used to the old design. Thinking about it now though, they do do a decent job at the Valve-esque environmental hints at pointing you where to go, and it does a better job at showing the player where they'll need to go at the end of the level. My favorite redesign by far is the Marine-in-a-box. When I first played the Definitive Edition I approached the boxes waiting for them to break apart, only to have a Marine just walk out slowly from behind and casually ambush me. I'd love to know what the Marine was thinking when he saw that, "What the f**k is this nutjob doing pointing a shotgun at at box?"

In my first playthrough I actually decided to help the marines when the garg attacked. I felt that I didn’t want them to be incinerated in flames, at least a bullet to the head is a quick way to die, fire keeps you alive. So I decided to help the marines fight the garg (of course I was wasting ammo since the garg can’t be killed with bullets but I didn’t know that) with the plan of killing the marines after the garg was dead, this didn’t play out as the garg massacred all the marines and left me terrified.

Every day you have to go underground and sit in a small room with dirty concrete walls. All your entertainments is either watching security camera screens that 90% of time show absolutely the same picture, or bring some sort of read with yourself, like journals or books. No sunlight, except for short brakes or if something happens and you've being asked to help outside. In some sort it feels almost as a prison. More to Trivia: *0:35 and 1:12 - Actually, if Gordon will be cornered by Garg (1:27) in starting area he can evade him by entering through the door on the left side, it leads to rail carts storage (it's a new feature in Defenitive Edition); *4:03 - I think you're a bit incorrect, Silo D actually isn't rocket silo, but a rocket engine test lab, so map of the railroad (actually it's monorail) system on switchboard show Silo D as (one of) the 'Lab' and Gordon proceed to rocket silo and the 'Silo' at the end of the chapter; *5:35 - At the same place HL1 you can see the unic scene where bullsquid drags survived HECU soldier through the crack in the wall, also in HL1 this silo didn't have sili doors and you can fight HECU soldiers inside of it, and also the silo's bottom was filled with corrosive chemicals instead of radioactive wastes; *This is the first chapter where you meet HECU marines are wearing night vision goggles (Defenitive Edition's addition), in prior versions you first meet them in 'Surface Tension'; *8:18 - In prior versions of the game this HECU shotgunner was able to break crates he hiding behind and make surprise attack on Gordon; *9:20 - Small supply crates now breakable with one hit instead of two, that resembles supply crates from HL2 now (added in recent update); *15:00 - Isn't Gordon can return to the control room by opening this silo door which should be active from now on? Trivia to 'On A Rail': *In HL1 railway system actually is electrified monorail system, but BM shows it as classic railroad with third rail (but in game it isn't electrified); *In original game when you step on the rail you'll receive some electrical damage, the same happened if you'll touch the water where electrified rail is submerged. Trivia to 'Apprehension': *If you fall in water while being inside of rail cart and after that stay in water for some time, HECU marines will comment that as "Nice camouflage, asshole!" I still have some footage from the previous version, where I hid in a hallway leading to the track control, watching him snarl and try to poke his flamethrower claws in "Come out and play with me!" style) The new ver. made me feel fear in this chaper once again, making me feel literally spawncamped almost at the start P.S. *Just* noticed than in this game a healing station has the Xbox360's Red Ring Of Death))

The carts work after power has been restored (and shocking the Garg) - perhaps that's what happened?
I really like what they've done with the chapter. The darkness until you reboot the generator makes it more immersive. And they had the emergency lights on, which makes sense, and helps you a bit,by guiding and giving you that bit of light to not fumble around much. About the cut out corridors for the Garg chase: many miss this But there's a chase at the other two instances when you encounter Gargantuans. Having a chase each time becomes dull. It's more compact this way, also why would they put a generator that out of the way? It's a nice, short, immersive level. Good thing too, right before the beast of a segment that is On a Rail. btw, I'm not mad they didn't implement the leeches. Those were annoying in the original. Well, they could put them back for lore reason, just not have them attack the player, as he's too big, and has an armor.

@@vodkavecz That is very true. I am warming up to the new Garg encounter a lot more now knowing the devs' intention. Like you said it does make the ST chase more intense as that is the first instance where the Garg chases Gordon for an extended period of time. Thanks for the comment :)

8:43 Was taking the stairs always an option? I feel like the whole point in the original half-life was to funnel you into a point where you have to fight the soldiers coming down, they seem pretty easy to sidestep like this
@Sexy_Nutella
Жыл бұрын
You do fight them as you happen across the generator in the original game just like this if memory serves me correct. The game also does force you to take the lift when you're going back up, which places you directly in the path of some HECU reinforcements
I played HL in the 90s through 2010s on a Windows. Having moved to a Mac Studio, have they made it available for this platform? I am getting mixed readouts. txs!

It's a mod called "Particle Enhancement Project" on the Steam Workshop. It changes the gun muzzle flashes as well as the explosions

Question: why is it not so dark? I have tried to fix the overdarkness problem but it only helped a little. I have full brightness so I have no idea why it’s so dark. Any idea why?
@Sexy_Nutella
3 жыл бұрын
This chapter did get way darker in this version of the game, it's a feature of the level and not a bug. You need the flashlight to be able to see anything at all for most parts of this chapter. Perhaps that's why you are noticing it being really dark? If so that is perfectly normal. Once you restore the power, the whole map should be brighter.

Not sure to be honest.
I remember saw ur comment or maybe replying one of viewers here, it is said that ur normally gameplay should be more agressive and fast , but because in this gameplay you steep into freeman's character and his point of view to this event, thats why you slow down ur gameplay in this walktrough and pay attention to other details right ? I forgot wich video u wrote that note, it makes me realize ur gameplay just relaxing but the shooting is on point hahaha

interesting
I wish I remembered the actual name Garg instead of the Black Mesa Golem Ape
Gargantua feels underwhelming. It doesn't have the heavy earth-shaking steps like in the original. It's rather like someone is walking loudly, rather than being heavy in itself. Also, it's figure looks a bit malnourished. The original had a fatter figure.

Two Words: Muzzle flashes. It would be a lot creepier. But also a lot cooler, using the guns to find a way through. Feels like something Gordon would do of his flashlight malfunctioned

Maybe one day but not anytime soon. Black Mesa covers the same ground storywise as HL1, though I do think the original has its own unique charm. Its just that there are a bunch of other videos I'd rather make than a HL1 playthrough.

I personally enjoyed it, though I can see why some wouldn't - Blast Pit and Power Up are essentially two back-to-back "boss fight" chapters.
@shidder

@@Sexy_Nutella That's probably why I dislike it. It just seems like a low-budget copy of blast pit as it literally has the same concept. Go to that room and turn something on, quickly run next to the boss and to an another room and turn something on and then use the combined things that you turned on to kill the boss.
