Chapter 3: Unforeseen Consequences
After passing out during the Resonance Cascade, Gordon awakens to find the Anomalous Materials lab in complete shambles, with most of the personnel dead. Worse, strange alien creatures have appeared, some of whom appear to have completely overtaken the bodies of the staff, causing them to suffer grotesque mutations and attack and consume the survivors. With all communications systems disabled, Gordon is tasked by Eli and Kleiner to make his way up to the surface to call for help. Firstly, he must find a way out of the lab, all the while defending himself from the hostile aliens.

Notes:
- Freeman can jump straight to the other walkway at 25:32 instead of going through the vent system
- I purposely allowed myself to get hit by the Bullsquid acid at 26:18 to show the acid getting on the weapon
Trivia:
- The song that plays when Gordon wakes up is a track called "Resonance" by Joel Nielsen, which replaces the original song "Mesa Remix" from the 2012 mod version, which can be listened to here: • Joel Nielsen Black M...
- In HL1, if Gordon waits around for a bit, the scientist is actually able to successfully revive the Guard at 0:38. In Black Mesa this does not happen
- It is heavily implied that the headcrab Kleiner takes a liking to at 2:11 is Lamarr from HL2
- At 2:42, Eli mentions that he needs to find his family. In Half-Life canon Eli's wife Azian and daughter Alyx both live with him at the facility. Azian doesn't make it out of Black Mesa, but Eli manages to save Alyx (with the help of a certain interdimensional bureaucrat)
- The scientist that gets gibbed by the laser at 3:20 is the same one who scolded Freeman for arriving late (the "test chamberrr" scientist) one chapter prior. As well, the scientist who told Gordon to push the crystal into the Anti-Mass Spectrometer can be found laying dead to the left of the room
- In HL1, the guard at 4:45 is cut in half by the laser as opposed to being gibbed
- The crowbar is found at 4:52 in the original HL1
- The scientists in the elevator at 5:00 cannot be saved - they are doomed whether Gordon presses the button or uses props to shatter the window
- The Guard at 5:43 cannot die, even if repeatedly attacked by Zombies. In the mod version, he will perish if sustaining enough damage. In fact, a particular death animation played where the Zombie lifts him up by his neck and strangles him to death
- Similar to HL2:EP2's "Little Rocket Man" achievement, where Gordon had to carry a Garden Gnome prop from the start of the game all the way to the White Forest Base, Black Mesa has an achievement titled "Rare Specimen" which requires Gordon to bring a purple hat found in this chapter all the way to Xen (another achievement, "The Rarest Specimen", requires him to bring it all the way to the end of the game). The purple hat itself is not shown in this video, but can be found tucked behind the pipes at 11:43
- The pistol originally was found in the Security Office at 17:53. It is now picked up from the dead Security Guard at 13:58, mirroring the same location as in HL1
- Shooting the zombies behind inaccessible doors, such as at 14:48, will wake them and cause them to wander around the room
- Barnacles make their first appearance in the game at 15:45. They share the same model as in HL2
- G-man makes his third appearance at 15:57
- The first Houndeye in the game is encountered at 16:02. As opposed to HL1, where their sonic attack emits a blue arc, Black Mesa's variant warps the air around them instead
- The first Vortigaunt is encountered at 19:20. Their AI has received a revamp since my last playthrough; they are now more prone to dodging attacks by side-strafing and utilize the AOE attack as seen in HL2EP2
- The song at the Headcrab elevator at 22:57 is titled ""Mesa Theme (UC Remix). The old song, "Unforeseen Consequences", can be found here: • Joel Nielsen Black M...
- The headcrab elevator is also known as the "Akira elevator", as the lift design bears striking similarities to a lift that is seen in the 1984 manga "Akira" (24:38). In fact, the level designer of that area has confirmed that Akira was the direct inspiration for the lift
- The first Bullsquid encounter at 26:13. Bullsquids in this game are a lot weaker than their HL1 counterparts and aren't as aggressive to Gordon
- HEV supply crates, shown at 27:20, are a new addition to the Definitive Edition, and contain supplies similar to the HL2 supply crates
- The crates at 28:27 used to sway when jumped upon, in the mod version

    You can enable blood/bullsquid acid on weapons using the following console command: "cl_mdldetailfx_enable 1" (without the quotation marks) I am also running the Improved Viewmodel Blood workshop mod to improve the texture on the weapon: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=453382921 My favourite part of this chapter is how different in tone the accident sequence is compared to HL1 - whereas HL1's focus is more on horror, Black Mesa's re-imagining uses the player's foreknowledge of what the Resonance Cascade means for the Half-Life series to create a more emotional and dramatic post-accident sequence. Also, I added some minor sound mixing right before Freeman wakes up, which I think adds a lot to the title drop of "Unforeseen Consequences" :)

    @@marthaacosta7739 1) BMCE (introduces more NPC models for scientists, guards and HECU) 2) Particle Enhancement Project (more cinematic explosions, gunfire effects and Tau Cannon particles) 3) Alternate Crossbow Scope - higher quality crossbow scope that reduces its blockiness when zoomed in 4) Improved viewmodel blood (better blood spatter on weapons) 5) Glock sprint animation fixed (adds the left hand back in when sprinting with the Glock)

    I love how Black Mesa REALLY hits you hard with how much of a disaster the resonance cascade is. The first chunk of the area you've got to rely on other people or avoid fights altogether as you've no weapons, and it wastes no time in showing you the horror of what's happened. Even in the first moments, the track "Resonance" absolutely sells you the feeling of "oh god, what have we done" while surveying the destroyed test chamber and ruined hallways of the facility. Even though you know full well this was all going to happen, it still comes off as a shock. As it should- it's the beginning of the end, after all.

    Yeah, loved their portrayal of this event; whereas HL1's was more horror-driven, this version plays off the fact that you already know what the Resonance Cascade will mean for the Earth

    If that headcrab in the microwave had truly teleported into the inside of the microwave isn't the single most statistically unluckiest entity in the entire Half-Life lore? Because I refuse to believe that someone took the time and effort to actually trap one and put the microwave back in place and plug it in.

    Late reply, but if you noclip through the remove before ne runs up to the door you can see him lying down/sitting against a wall, so he did pass out

    19:27 “I’m glad there’s no kids seeing this.” -A rebel from 20 years in the future. If we say the incident takes place at May 16 2003 which is a Friday, then just imagine kids (that are within a 75-150 mile radius of BMRF) working while a one big eyed freak spawns outside the window. Little do they know that they will eventually have them in the future, helping to take down something bigger.

    The elevator scene is my most favourite part of UC. Definitive Edition makes it seem even more visually impressive, and Joel Nielsen’s soundtrack adds so much to the atmosphere the original soundtrack never did

    Yeah, I liked how the tone of this chapter leaned more towards a somber tone than strictly survival horror, given the implications of the Resonance Cascade on the Half-life universe as a whole (Combine invasion).

    Don't forget the first guard of Office complex, he has a whole script to escape by moving through covers of the automatic turret area, and the On a Rail guard with a shotgun, which has a very good script to accompany you until the end of the rocket release They are very enjoyable to watch and almost nobody knows them. Great video, I like the way you play, I do it too even if I don't record it, or even more exaggerated

    Interesting, I knew about the OaR guard but not the OC guard. I'm recording right now, and would love to show the script you are talking about. As far as I remember you can't bring the first guard with you until after you encounter the first turret. Do I drop down from the vent, run into the nearby corridor and open the door at the end to let the guard through, so that he can play his script?

    Yes, after the scientist who dies appears, you don't touch the turret, go and open the door to the guard, in theory only with that (or maybe being attacked first while he sees you) he will stay still behind the wall until the turret is turned off, he will move to a new place by himself. I don't remember if it's to a box or straight up the stairs He does everything with "unique" audios for the moment

    Either they lowered the hp on the early zombies or buffed the security guard, but it's good to see him not just derping in his pathing AI and dying early on. HL2 AI was good for its time but had its share of frustrations.

    Yeah, they deliberately made it so that the Guard can't be killed anymore by the Zombies (at least the first one you meet), just because his AI is still not the greatest - what you see in the video is a rare case where the Guard didn't randomly just run away from the zombies or stand and take their hits. I do miss that choke animation from the mod days when he could die though.

    @@Sexy_Nutella I was lucky enough to get a smart guard I think the intentions of making him invincible was to teach to the player how to use friendly AI to their advantage,not to just kill them for ammo or a gun right away

    The part with the scientists in the elevator is a huge gut punch. Especially on my first playthrough when I didn't realize I could break the elevator door windows and though I had to press the button and kill them myself. Black Mesa really does a great job of capturing the tragedy of the whole incident.

    I agree. The voice acting for that part was ridiculously good. Whoever voiced them (I believe Joel Nielsen actually got a couple of his friends to record that audio) did a good job selling the panic.

    I'm currently trying to recreate in Hammer the Hot Water Feed Valves (1 & 2) puzzle mechanics (@16:54 & 18:35) with all the details (pickup-able valve wheel that connects to the valve seat, thermometers, indicator lights, the bar light indicator and the steam + sound effects). Doing this just for fun. I have most of it figured out now but at first, I didn't suspect how complicated all the mechanics of this is. There's a LOT more going on in this puzzle than meets the eye. It gives me renewed respect for the creators of this mod.

    A minor detail you can miss is how Gordon shoots and hits more than is necessary. This can be seen as him figuring out how much effort is needed to kill these creatures. Or I could be reading to deep into this. Either way, glad I shared this thought.

    Bit late here, but personally I don't enjoy the new bullsquid model. The HL1 model was, dare I call a bipedal carnivore who spits corrosive chemicals at the speed of a car, cute. It's animations were very exaggerated and it's eyes, being entirely to the side of it's head made it seem like less of a predator. And to the credit of the developers, the new roars and the angry, front facing red eyes make it seem very aggressive; but I personally would have wished for them to simply revamp the old model.

    I do like the new model, but I miss the HL1 bullsquid behaviour where it was much more aggressive. Black Mesa's Bullsquids tend to forget about Freeman the moment he leaves their line of sight, and they are also much weaker. A single double blast kills them on Hard :/

    Nope, you can't get in there. The glass is breakable but it's too small for you to get in.

    Might be a bug with the newest update to the game. I would check the Steam discussion page for the game, or join the discord and ask there.

    I hope they could make half life 1 and 2 half life 2 episode 1&2 and black Mesa and opposing forces and blue shift for the Nintendo switch because they played for about 21 years

    In HL1, the baby was actually a picture from one of the devs. Canonically I think the writer (Mark Laidlaw) said that it's likely Gordon's nephew.
