Black in Spain: living, working, dating and wellness in Barcelona// holistic living

Hey you,
In this weekend's video, I wanted to share a talk with my sunshine of a friend Sophia (insta @sophsheis) and her experience growing up in Spain. I always love learning and sharing about black women's experiences around the world and hope to continue doing more. I hope that this conversation is of value for anyone curious about black experiences in Spain.
I hope this video finds you well, intentionally creating a life that feels like love to your souls.
As always, sending you lots of love, light and courage,
Yours truly, your digital sis ;)
M.

I missed your friend’s name but her energy is my energy! From the rooftops, to cuffing season, to unapologetically putting people on their place when they step out of character. Thank you for this chat! Likely moving to BCN soon ❤

Please do your homework ( many short to medium trips followed by lots of traveling ) first, It is near impossible being black and without a community base ( that you can trust ) The hate is real and very dangerous, just the sight of us can send many of these demons crazy! Take care!

Great episode, I like the way you structured the talk, it came across very laid back and comfortable. Would love to see a follow up I think you guys bounce off each others energy well. Just on your last point about safe spaces for black women to talk about sexuality, thanks for the reminder about Kandi Baruss, cause I had forgotten about her since I don’t watch RHOA anymore. I would also suggest you check out Oloni, her Twitter threads are the best and a very insightful aswell 😊

Look at you passing it on Ruth! Love it😊 I do not have Twitter unfortunately but will try to find her some way cause we I do not know enough sex-educative and positive spaces by black women. So thank you so much for sharing! :-)

Thank you for this video. It was so insightful hearing experience of another black woman. I am considering leaving my home country in Africa. I am 2 exams away from qualifying for qualification that is internationally recognized. Spain was one of the countries that popped up as being a safe country.

Hi - Thanks - From the UK moved to Madrid years ago when I was the kid, now at 32 years of age I honestly can say I hate it! As the friend said we normalized the hate and racism and took it as " its ok " I was not going to let my children grow up the way I did , but where was better? as black people in general are NOT accepted anywhere in this world. We moved back to England, which has its issues BUT my kids now can see other girls that look like them and have some type of community. If you don't believe me go to any spanish football match where there are young black players and listen to the hate in the crowd and sometimes on the pitch!

@@mayiinbloom Thanks for responding: I am married to a black woman from Sacramento and I had brought her out here!! we have two black girls under the age of 10 so it was no longer about my needs. It was and is paramount that I do everything to give them the best start in life especially when it came to the boring but relevant subject of racism and that meant limiting their exposure to white ignorance and ensuring that they mixed and could play with other girls that looked like them! Best decision of my life as the family are happier than happy!

This is a great video. I'm considering making a move to Spain but I'm not sure which city I want to be in. Do you happen to know any community groups that I can join to add to my research? I'm considering Valencia, Madrid, Seville and Magala or even the Canary Islands. Thank you.

Hi Ismaelle, I unfortunately do not know of many, as I mostly met people from socialising, work or Bumble BBF. Sophia did mention this site though: melaninmadrid.com/ I hope it can be of use and best of luck for your move! :-)

Two beautiful intelligent women...love your conversation...but any Black woman who can live abroad seeking contentment and success in their life, can do way better than Spain...even Portugal next door to Spain, would be a better life experience.
