Black Hole Size Comparison 2017

Ғылым және технология

Stars in our Universe can get unimaginably giant, but one thing that beats them is Black Holes. In this video, we compare these magnificent objects' size with the Earth, Sun, and even the entire Solar System to give a perspective on how truly large Black Holes are.

    A common misconception is that people think that the huge black circle is the size of the black hole itself. The huge black void you see is the event horizon of the black hole, the point of no return. The actual size of a black hole is the size of the singularity that lies within. That is approximately the size of a planck length. Mind boggling and insanely small. That's why they say its infinitely small and point in space where the laws and physics of space and time don't work anymore.

  • @ahriman935

    @ahriman935

    6 жыл бұрын

    You are at the same time correct, and wrong. It's correct that the event horizon does not necessarily represent the geometrical boundary of the energy-matter the black hole consists of, but we do not know if its size is Plank length. It is but one of several theories, and we can't tell because it's all in the sphere of maths. Better and better theories arise with time, initially we thought black holes are even weirder, that they exist in infinite future, that time compresses to infinity when we approach it and such weird fuckery. It was all after Schwarzschild's solution. Than came Eddington-Lemaitre model that removed the infinity-while-approaching stuff but raised some other questions. And so on, so on. Do not claim anything in particular is below the horizon. Below the horizon our maths, our physics, our understanding breaks, and EVERYTHING is just speculations. It is not limited to central singularity itself, but also to the whole volume below the horizon.

    No, the actual size of a BH depends on its mass(schwarzschild radius).

  • @ahriman935

    @ahriman935

    6 жыл бұрын

    Not just a graphic representation, that's more or less what you would see should you gaze onto a black hole (which I wholeheartedly hope you never will). The light can't escape the event horizon (one of its many, many fucked up properties) and you can say those black circles are (from our perspective) a cross section of more or less spherical volume that the horizon surrounds.

    Let me ease your nightmares, then. We’ll never die by a black hole. Black Holes may be big and creepy-looking, but they’re not the hellish harbingers on the apocalypse that pop-culture makes them out to be. They’re actually the garbage cleaners and energy recyclers of the universe- and even the largest black holes are REALLY bad at their job. Furthermore, black holes don’t live forever. They do eventually die.

    *Supermassive Black Hole Size Comparison 2017 Just putting it out there so people don't get the misconception that the much more common stellar black holes could ever reach that size. Stellar black holes can usually only get to the size of planets or small stars thanks to the Eddington Limit iirc. Fun fact: The stellar ones are actually the ones that would actually hurt to fall into because of the high gravitational potential and small radius. You probably wouldn't feel uncomfortable falling into these supermassive ones' event horizons... at least at first, although once you crossed the event horizon you would be on an inevitable trek to the center with no possible escape (and it would probably get more uncomfortable as you went down).

    Bearing in mind that the mass of a black hole is not its size, but it is a good indicator of how big it may be. They are much smaller than their mass indicates (the smallest known black hole has 3.8 solar masses and is around 15 miles, or 24km, across). When referring to the size of a black hole it's usually the diameter of the event horizon that's measured.

    memoraphile that was be impossible, if the universe was completely solid mass(its not, 99% of it is a vacuum) then that black hole would have to have more that what the universe would hold, it could only get so big as to all of the mass in the universe yet it would lose some to hawking radiation and wouldnt gain any because it ate everything

  • @fusiontricycle6605

    Theoretically, scientists put the upper size limit of a black hole at 50 billion solar masses because at that mass, accretion can't happen. The tidal forces around such a black hole would be tiny even past the event horizon, not allowing it to rip apart stars. Accretion is the most effective way for a black hole to gain mass, so if you cut that off, it doesn't gain mass nearly as quickly. Now, colliding supermassive black holes can result in a monster such as TON 618, as it has been estimated to weigh ~66 billion solar masses. It was a very recent discovery and is why this video didn't mention it.

    in 1998 I read Hawkings book "A Brief History of Time" in which he explained black holes really well. Later on it was really astonishing how many people made assertions about black holes that were just plain stupid but seemed provacative in nature and therefore made it into science journals and articles. Using black holes for time travel or gateways to other universes were some of these ideas. I think Hawking recently realeased a statement saying most people that study black holes are thinking about them wrong. I think he is right and I wish he would write another book about it.

    Mmm, it'd be a slower and more painful inevitable death. At least you'd get to watch the universe speed up to its end from behind the horizon! Time would slow down for you, so it would look like everything outside was speeding up! Of course, the end would be a rapid blur, since the speed-up _should_ be exponential. Shame one can't report that information to the outside world! You'd be millions of years too late, even if you hopped out of it after witnessing the end. Everyone would be long dead, and it would be billions of years too late. Perhaps, even the big crunch just "deleted" the universe anyways. It's super theoretical. Might as well be spaghettified.

    I'm glad we have them. They are one of the keys of galaxy formation, supermassive black holes acted as the gravitational seed in the early universe, allowing matter to coalesce and form stars. Violent star formation feeds tons of gas and debris into the accretion disk of the black hole, which creates a quasar. The intense radiation from the quasar blows gas out from the core of the galaxy, which regulates/restricts star formation and creates a calm galaxy (like a carburettor on an engine). The Milky Way is a nice place to live, because Sagittarius A did a great job over many billions of years. Thanks for the chill place to live, Giant Black Hole.

    Bojan Manasiev Astro is a root that means star, as in astronomy or astronaut. Astrophobia is the fear of stars, space, and all other celestial bodies and phenomena. It's typically seen in people who have irrational fears of large celestial objects or phenomena bringing disaster to Earth or of technologically advanced alien lifeforms taking over the planet.

    Dante Broady it is real, but it's far from us. But did you know our solar system is getting sucked closer to a black hole everyday? And also, a black hole is eating out galaxy right now, faster than scientists thought. Sleep tight! 🤗

    I wonder if there was at least someone in this comments section that went out of their way to calculate exactly how much mass or how big they are based on the solar mass for each of these black holes by using the Schwarzchild radius formula.
