I think they chose this song because it was popular at the time and whoever was in charge of the music didn't know the original lyrics. I was probably the only one there that knew. After reading the lyrics I actually quite like the song. It's about making a difference in the world and looking at it like a "retarded" person would. Considering that the term was still heavily acceptable at that time I don't see too much to be offended by, I'm not going to get offended by people using a term that, at the time, wasn't considered overly offensive. They changed it later to "Get It Started" in the 2004 re-release because that's when western society began to developmental disabilities seriously. I'll never forget in 5th grade my teacher would let 1 or 2 students each day play a song from a CD (remember those) they brought into class. Everyone was already familiar with "Lets get it started" but some kid in my class brought in THIS version on a CD and played it to the class it was pretty epic back then. Teacher definitely wasn't happy.

This is the original. I had the album. Let’s Get It Started was the “clean” version, which then blew up. They eventually started printing the album with Let’s Get It Started instead of this one.

They tried to bite off the Bay Area lol it failed. The music in the bay at the time would have words like “get crazy, stupid, dumb, retarded” an actual line from the Federation feat. E-40 on a song called Hyphy. Black Eyed Peas used to record at 17 Hertz Studio in Hayward so they thought maybe they could get away with it? Lol didn’t work out too well.
