Black Belt Speech | Lex Fridman

I got my BJJ black belt yesterday from Phil Migliarese and Ricardo Migliarese at Balance Studios after 9 years of hard training and competing. I've learned more about life from martial arts than any other endeavor I've undertaken. The biggest lesson is that I'm not special, far from it, and that to get better at anything, you have to work hard. There are no shortcuts.

" learned more about life on these mats than I have at all my years in school." Man that's a good statement and so true. I come from a background in wrestling starting at age 5 and eventually becoming a 2x all american in college. All that hard work, defeats and suffering built me as a person more than years of school and college education. The human spirit needs tough grueling physical challenges to develop to its maximum potential I truly believe that. Sadly, I think too many people dont understand how important doing difficult psychical things is and they miss an opportunity to better their personhood.

This is significant; not necessarily WHAT is said, but HOW he communicates. Here he accepts the duty in being onself and the beauty of "being ordinary" in the Universe/mankind. Yes. This is what I define as a martial artist. He is beyond the aggressive stage, extremely mature spoken. I would love to just be around this man or any of those men at this gym (his quality is the fruit of other good men in this gym). Congratulations to your black belt.

Very well said. I only discovered Lex Fridman this week after his AGI discussions justifiably blew up the nerdier corners of the Internet. The admirable traits you describe -- transcending aggression, and his embrace of the "beauty of being ordinary" (as you eloquently put it) -- are evident in his podcasts. They are produced without ego -- it's not about him, it's about his guests and their ideas. He never asks "gotcha" questions, and eschews the typical "point/counterpoint" of click-baity internet debates in favor of nuanced conversations that go where they need to go, and take as long as they need to take. I like this guy.

Just came across this video and I have to say that, although following Lex's podcast & clips, didn't have a clue about his BJJ skills. This man is amazing, the very 0.00...01 percent of people living on this planet atm. And yes, he is right, the black belt in BJJ is an fantastic achievement and the best part is not that belt but the years that you have spent on the mats. Those years taught you things you will never achieve anywhere else. After more than 12 y into BJJ and recently receiving my black belt I am now looking back and I realise that, despite all the sacrifices I had to make, it was well worth it. It genuinely changed my life and made me a better man. Ohh, and I still have 3 x unbroken fingers :)
