This is a very smart bear! We strung a cable from a tree to our eaves so our bird feeders would be safe from bears. We used a pulley on one of the feeders to make refilling easier. It has been in place for several years without any bears getting to it. This bear noticed the rope, which was tied off to the house about 8 feet up, grabbed the rope, and used it to pull down the cable. Time to figure out another system!
2024 Update: I moved the rope so that it ties off around the corner of the house. It's been several years and the bears haven't figured it our yet.
