Black and Missing org amplifies cases that are 'typically overlooked' | Banfield

Natalie Wilson and Derrica Wilson joined forces 16 years ago to "help bring awareness to the missing individuals that are typically overlooked." "We started sounding the alarm that people of color are disappearing at an alarming rate around the country," Natalie Wilson tells kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart during a "Banfield" special report. "Typically, they did not receive any media coverage, law enforcement resources or community engagement to be found." The pair founded the "Black and Missing Foundation," which aims to provide an equal opportunity for all that are missing. Natalie Wilson says they've "made great strides" but "still have a lot of work."

It has over 500 views now. However, it appears that a lot of missing children are runaways and troubled. I was a runaway many times in my youth because of turmoil in the home. Investigate the home and find out what's happening that would cause the child to leave. I can't believe these black children are being ABDUCTED, maybe they are lured away through social media. That to me is a runaway. Do these children have cell phones? Maybe we should start putting gps trackers on our children.

IF A TEEN OR ADULT BLACK MALE IS MISSING, I often think "crime". That he was the victim of a murder and his body was disposed of. There's so much of that going on in black neighborhoods, violence, retaliation. The families know more then they're giving the police.

Yeah I'm sure if one of Jay-z and Beyoncé's kids went missing it would be ignored. Please! Regardless of race, a missing child deserves attention. That being said, we cannot lump together a kidnapping vs a young adult who runs off and doesn't want to be found.

well that last sentence was dumb....that's such an obvious statement...unless you're implying only black women and girls run away because they dont want to be found. which just goes to further prove, there are actually studies that show that law enforcement predominantly classify black woman as runaway knowing that the family will have to wait more than 48 hours before they do anything.

@@cygnevara8400 Dumb and obvious simultaneously? How ironic of you to makethat statement. I never mentioned race. Your assumption reveals something about yourself though.

@@cygnevara8400 The first sentence of my comment would make it painfully obvious that I don't agree with the premise that skin color is the driving factor in cases getting ignored. Socioeconomic status is by far a better indicator. And yes, people of all colors, in dire economic circumstances are more likely to deal with hardships that would cause a teen to want to leave. Dumb and obvious I guess, even though I had to write a novel to explain it.
