Black Adam - It's An OK Movie

Ойын-сауық

So Black Adam turned out to be surprisingly... OK. Who knew? In a world of awful MCU entries and a DCEU that's struggling to find a path forward, could Black Adam finally be the breakthrough they need?

But I do really think they could have leaned into his brutality more if they wanted to but that doesn't really fit the story or his history. A diverse cast, including a non-binary actress, where none of that diversity was ever even brought up in the movie. Seriously great way to do it. Also, the film addressed the whole "proxy war" approach vs the "not my problem" approach, and didn't preach about either. Instead, national sovereignty seems to be where they rest things, which is pretty dang cool. Yeah, the movie was just okay and fairly unremarkable, but the fact that it's not following the "get woke" trend makes me quite hopeful.

I thought The Rock, Pierce Brosnan and Aldis Hodge's (even though Hawkman was never black in the comics) performances carried the film. It's not perfect and there's some things that could've been polished better, but overall it does something relatively new in the big budget superhero genre by making a bad guy into an anti-hero, and does so in a believable way. I also liked how it showed Black Adam's complete indifference to killing bad guys until he was convinced by the JSA that he should probably tone the murder down a bit. The reintroduction of Cavill as Superman at the end was probably the most exciting thing for me as Cavill's interpretation of the character is my favorite and kudos to The Rock for telling Warner Brothers to bring Cavill back.

  • @ikoyDaPnoy

The problem with comics these days is that it invests more energy into thinning the line between good & evil, right & wrong. Batman in the 1939 to around the 1990's was pretty much morally incorruptable. Of course there were a few writers here and there that deviated from that but ultimately, Batman was a "good" guy. Nowadays, he's morally questionable and more often than not mentally unstable. In the 80's & 90's, I remember a few comics & cartoons that played with the idea that MAYBE villains emerged BECAUSE of their hero counterparts. However, that was usually debunked as they just CHOSE to be bad people and NOT a product of their heros. Nowadays, villains like the Joker are thought to be a product of either Batman or a victim of society. The introduction of Amanda Waller's story arcs further propagated this notion that villains can be "good" guys ... that "good" things can come from bad people under the right circumstances. Again, blurring the lines of good/evil & right/wrong. Red Hood was revamped from a 1951 comic to now fit this modern narrative that Batman's code is actually wrong. In the 40s through 70s, Batman's moral code was good, however, in the 90's, Batman's code was questionable at best but now it's actually wrong. Here you have Black Adam doing the same thing. Back then, he was a bad guy with a few good intentions but ultimately chose the path of evil. Same with Mr. Freeze back then too who was trying to save his wife Nora but circumstances that prevented that made him choose evil. Now Black Adam is a good guy who makes "killing under the 'right' circumstances" a good thing. They've done this for years with Batman who refuses to kill. I believe they've lost the whole point of many of the characters as a result of this pervasive comic culture. This urgent need to eliminate traditional values by painting them in a bad light. This is what opened the door for the woke ideologies to come flooding in. Now, the MCU are all women. She Hulk is twerking and the male heros are all weak morons. America Chavez wears an LGBTQ pin in her movie debut. All these women heros are just innately stronger & smarter than their male counterparts without an actually journey to earn that.

I can remember that if you duped him into saying Shazam and he reverts back to his mortal body then he crumbles to dust. I have to agree with you on alot of points about Black Adam that they could've done alot better on. However, I felt the movie was alot better than okay. Alot better than The Flash movie, that's for sure. Methinks Hollywood has lost track of what makes a great Superhero film and, in that regard, Black Adam could have been a spectacular film but they wanted to play it safe. It's a shame because I would've loved to have seen a return of Black Adam as well as the JSA in some regard as well as Black Adam battling Shazam or Supes. At any rate, I'll have to accept that will never happen. Those parts will probably be recast in the DCU. Great review. Love watching your reviews.

@@Ironica82 that actually gives me hope that there's a chance for a solid and enjoyable Superman franchise. I sometimes forget that some of the most loved heroes had a few shitty entries to their franchises, so maybe there's hope for superman.

I think they should have gone more bold and had Adam kill one of the heroes. Either, on purpose or mistakenly, it would have given much more weight to the moral conflict they played with.

Eh that would cause them to not work together like ever, I like the chemistry between hawkman and black adam but in the beginning hawkman didn't like black adam if he killed one of his teammates we never wouldve gotten the relationship between the 2 we have now, I also doubt hawkman is just gonna leave black adam alone after that, black adam kills and that's why hawkman dosent like him, but everyone he's killed has been bad people who hawkman dosent know, if hawkman hated him that much based off that, if he killed a good person that he knows that's OD they aint ever working together

Haven't seen this yet but I can agree that it would have made a better contrast between the stereotypical heroes and the morally grey one. Where the heroes could ultimately reconcile their hatred for the greater good because that's what a hero should do. Where as the morally grey type would probably care more about their friends or the end goal and everything between is a distraction.

Actually expose the heros as the one behind the intergang would be a more interesting plot twist

So, the wife and I have been rewatching the Avatar Last Airbender cartoon series late and just watched Black Adam. It boggles my mind that a 13 year old cartoon can make me feel more things and pull me in more than a billion-dollar summer blockbuster based on a long established comic.

The saddest part is that they had the idea of a Black Adam movie since 2008 and been working on it for 10 years, yet this is the best they can do.
