One man’s ruthless pursuit of justice plays out against the darkest chapter of Irish history in this riveting revenge thriller. In 1847, battle-hardened soldier Feeney (James Frecheville) deserts the British army to return home to Ireland, where he finds his country ravaged beyond recognition by the Great Famine. When he discovers that his mother has died of starvation and his brother has been hanged by the British, something snaps, sending Feeney on a relentless quest to get even with the powers-that-be who have wronged both his family and his country. There is only one man who can stop Feeney’s bloody crusade: disgraced British army veteran Hannah (Hugo Weaving), whose own loyalties may be more complex than they appear…

It's mad how the lead actor isn't even Irish. He has a pure Irish face and he pulls off the accent fairly well. Good job!

@notimportant I'm half Irish half English and tbh the stereotypes are true, we are boozy nations. Europeans meet us and find us too wild. Found this when I when I travelled Australia, the brits and Irish are always the last standing. Always one more drink to have to keep going. I'm not saying your not wrong BTW about the British stereo type as even the company Guinness were complicit in this sort of message

This film is classic! I though I was about to watch a depressing historical drama about the Irish famine, but it turned out to be a remake of First Blood set in victorian times! He even has a big knife.
I truly enjoyed this film and was quite startled that it received a poor rating. I mean, this film actually does exactly what great filmmaking is all about, which is to present a story to the audience that they can follow and relate to, to show, not tell, to create rich, complex characters that we can either like or hate, and it touches upon the subject of the human condition. This film provided a great glimpse into the darkness that was the Irish Potato Famine, allowing the audience to empathize with the victims and to have characters like Hugo Weaving's Inspector Hannah and Barry Keoghan's Private Hobson provide characters that destroy any potential chance of stereotyping, particularly amongst the English characters, as the two create a father and son bond that is quite moving, particularly as Hobson's death in trying to help starving people get food pushes Hannah further into helping the Irish people and to seek revenge for his former best friend Martin Feeney and his surrogate son Hobson.

Bought a book recently called The Encyclopedia of the Irish Famine. Absolutely brilliant read with real facts and paper work from the famine. Cost 59 euros. The film is good but us Irish need a real movie made on our famine. The real facts are hurtful and our people suffered so much. Truth is it would take alot longer then 90mins. Still appreciate the film

It wasn’t a famine, food was plentiful other than the potato. It was an intentional starvation of Irelands poor.
I lived 13 years in Ireland Dublin , beatiful City great Irish Culture , if you read irish history you will be shocked .
I'm Scottish-Irish American, my family left Ireland because of the famine, I'm glad to see a movie portraying the anger of the Gaelics.
Never underestimate the power of a human being under the influence of starvation.
I watched and enjoyed the movie. Had a john rambo vibe to it. Coming back from war overseas , skilled and experienced. Coming home to nothing. Worth the watch .
That one kid is turning up in everything. The one with the squinty eyes... The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Dunkirk, Calm with Horses and Eternals. Barry somethin rather. Hell of an actor.

Such a sad period. Many died on "Coffin Ships" trying to make it to America to escape the famine. It's estimated that 30% died on the ships crossing the Atlantic. Then, many died after getting to America from the diseases caught on the ships.
This cast is insane! Seriously. Wow!
Sadly, the Irish were thought of as even lower than the highlanders. They burned our houses and cleared our people out of the glens. Nova Scotia, NZ and Australia were where my people ended up. We had famine too, but nothing like the depths of horror seen in Ireland. Our stories have yet to be told on the silver screen, and I suspect it may never happen, but at least this is a start.

Truth is painful, but it must be Told! Respect to the film makers!
This is a film that tells you so much from the little information it gives. You see one scene and just what is in frame tells you more about the British rule in Ireland than any lesson I've ever sat through.

It wasn’t solely England, Scotland were co-founders of the British empire
There are very little depictions of the English occupation and accompanying famine during this era. It’s a downer for a topic so it won’t make anyone who makes a film on it any money. This film lets us at least dip our toe into this period, even though it has to have a bit of the typical action/ revenge angle worked in. Surprised Liam Neeson wasn’t available. A good film.
Powerful film. So damn disturbing what happened back then...and yet, this kind of oppression and brutality still exists today.

My great-great-great grandfather was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1821, and immigrated here to the United States in the Spring of 1850. That means that he was still in Ireland like exactly as all of this was taking place. The only thing is, he was a Protestant living in the north, so he probably would have had nothing to do with these people!😂 He had graduated from the University of Glasgow in about 1843 or so.
