BJJ Oma Plata Setup from X Guard (They Won't See it Coming)

Спорт

I recently got asked several times to do something from X Guard. So in today's video I'm going to cover a sneaky BJJ Oma Plata setup from X Guard that they wont see coming.
I'll assume if you're watching this that you can already get to X Guard during your BJJ training or rolling.
Once there the big thing you need to focus on is continually off balancing your training partner or opponent.
This stops them from being able to counter your position. Instead they are working on maintaining their balance. This is a pretty constant principle for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
While off balance I show the Oma Plata setup. So the idea is, while they are focused on their balance they won't be able to see or defend the Oma Plata setup.
The Oma Plata is by itself a strong submission attempt. But in addition to this, it's also a powerful position that transitions to lots of other options like Guard sweeps and other submissions.
So if you're someone who uses X Guard in Brazilian Jiujitsu then I hope this setup is useful for you during rolling or competitions.
Talk to you next time!

Since this is the newest video of yours, I will say it here: I am about to start my BJJ journey in couple of weeks. I have been binging your videos for some weeks now and that is a big reason why I'm now starting BJJ. Just to let you know that your thoughts / videos are very highly appreciated. Sincere thank you and greetings from freezing northern Europe.

It is Omoplata*. Which is a Portuguese word for the scapula (shoulder blade bone) pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esc%C3%A1pula The scapula is very thin. So when it is pressured against the ribs it creates a submission.

My mind is blown. I thought the X guard was only for sweeps, or a transitory guard. I wonder if we could do more stuff with it? What about an armbar?

There are some great leg locks from x guard. Knee bar is right there. My fave transition is to move the leg to the opposite side of my head and give my opponent a little ride for the back take.

Hey chewy, do you have any advice on learning wrestling for bjj? I've found tilts, sit outs, and hip heist to be really helpful for rolling. What are some things you learned in wrestling that have been beneficial in bjj?

Hey chewy, my daughter practices bjj and also a traditional type martial arts which is a blend of jujitsu/judo/aikido, she has a tournament coming up in the latter in a few weeks, she is technically far better than anyone else in her category for grappling due to her bjj but has no fight in her at all, she has a habit of laughing til she ends up tapped, any tips or advice on how to get a bit of competitive spirit into her, she loves training and competing but just had no drive to do what she finds so easy.

Could you do a video on overcoming fear of wrestling in bjj. When ever I roll I get nervous to stand with people especially when they are bigger than me. Usually if my partner stands, I will play butterfly because I don't want to get hurt. I feel like this fear is hurting my game I was just wondering if you have any tips to overcome this fear. P.S. I am not that good at butterfly I am just white belt, but I feel like learning wrestling will help me in my bjj and help me with competitions in the future. If you have any tips it would be greatly appreciated.

So many names for position, uhm. The move makes sense. The hard part seems to be landing the foot at speed in the right spot, it does not help if you miss and give your leg for an achilless lock or accidentally free him from the guard.

If Adam doesnt do spirit fingers i wont try this technique in class tonight. But since he did it must be effective. We roll 18 rounds tonight no water breaks, 15 second breaks to change partners from every position.. Its been pouring rain here in sd but the surf and bjj are firing. Aloha guys

  • @karmanyngje4907

Explain to them that the whole point of jiu jitsu is so that you don't get hurt in a real fight, and also that you don't have to hurt other people either. Much better to be able to restrain someone, than punch them in the face and they crack their head on a kerb. Training and rolling isn't painless, but it's not particularly that painful either, especially the more you do it.

I'd say that usualy, the people who go and train Jiu Jitsu are pretty cool, like Chewy, very respectful and usualy relaxed. If they're afraid you'll get in there with some murderers out for some fresh meat to pummel, just let them know that practicing positions and submissions is probably less damaging than boxing and other combat sports and arguably more effective at "peacefully" resolving a conflict, since you know how to move someone into a restrictive position. Maybe talk to them, take them along to your first day so they see that these people are trustworthy and pretty cool! :) If they see what you see, I think it should work out!

omoplata is the name of a shoulder-back bone in brazilian portuguese... 'oma', 'plata' and 'oma plata' does not exist in portuguese. ('plata' means silver in spanish but it is writen 'prata' in portuguese and it has nothing to do with this submission).

Why did you say Brazilian Portuguese? It is also used in European Portuguese. With the new anatomical nomenclature it is called escápula (which is closer to the latin scapula). But in Portugal many doctors still use the old nomenclature of omoplata. pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esc%C3%A1pula

When giving a demonstration, it's always good to intro it, then just run it through once or twice before breaking it down. Helps people visualize the steps instead the entire process. When you go from intro to break-down, it's isn't as fluid. Good teaching, but showing it before breaking it down would massively help.
