Every time I hear someone talk about an opponent getting back up will shatter Islam’s confidence I know they aren’t really watching or listening. They said the same about Khabib, and every time in interviews they always say they don’t care if a guy gets back up because they will ride them back down and wear them out. Cormier used to say this all the time, that the dagastani’s know people will get back up which is why they train chain take downs so hard

Exactly what I said in a comment, their whole game revolves around taking people down and making them suffer their way through getting back up only to take them down again, and repeat. Khabib holds the record for most take downs in a single fight with 21 takedowns on 28 attempts in 3 rounds. Don't they understand what that means...? It means the guy got back up 21 times... I mean, we are not experts or anything so I really can't understand how their high level expert grappling coach is saying such a thing.

No matter what BJJ or wrestling coach you train with, it's very hard to beat their wrestling style. The only one that came close was Tsarukyan, and Islam still won despite being sick at the time.

to be fair effectiveness doesnt always reflect technique. To say khabib and islam have "proper striking technique" would just objectively incorrect. now, is it effective? EXTREMELY, but it is only bolstered by their grappling ability. If we think that these two are world class kickboxers would just be incorrect.

Why is it hilarious to not know who he is? He's not an MMA fighter. Following individual disciplines isn't a pre-requisite to being an MMA fan. Do you know all the main karate, muay thai, wrestling, bjj, sambo, grapplers... who don't compete in the UFC. Of course, you don't, you total bullshitter. Come to think of it, most of us only know about the UFC fighters. There are tons of other MMA organisations around the globe that the vast majority of us don't follow because most of us have lives to live and don't spend all day everyday watching sports and doing nothing else.

ISlam is boring as f, so was Khabib. Go watch all their fights, and thats not hating, its just a fact when comparing to other fighting styles. Now is it a really effective way to win? Yes. But is it exciting? No.

I'm a huge fan of Craig, but think he might be underestimating Islam's persistence and mental strength. People keeps saying he's never fought anyone like Volks who never gives up and always pops back to his feet. Has everyone forgotten that Islam has been fighting and training with Khabib for 22+ years? Khabib is the only guy in that team who would never give up and pops back up to his feet every time Islam took him down. Islam is supposedly the only Dagestani that has managed to win rounds off Khabib and you think Volks with 6 months prep will "pop back up" after he's taken down?!?! I love Volks, but Islam's seen that shit for 22 years!! Every time Volks gets back up, Islam will punch, kick and take him down again. And again. And again. And again. And again!

Absolutely. I’m a huge CJ (and Volk) fan as well but I couldn’t agree with you more. Volk will get back up but it I can’t see that phasing Islam at all. He’ll probably just smile and then put Volk down again..

I think part of what you are hearing is their messaging to Volk more than a dispassionate, objective analysis. it's all about making Volk comfortable enough to make good decisions in bad positions and not treat makhachev like an unbeatable man on the ground.

Combat sambo (not just ‘sambo’) involves punches, elbows, head butts, wrestling, judo etc. it is way more effective as a grappling art than just pure bjj in mma, and that style is really hard to replicate in the gym and prepare for, but Volks style is easier to replicate and prepare for.

it's amazing to me to be from New Zealand and lived in Australia, and have both countries, get mentioned at the top of grappling arts...in 2007-08 in New Zealand I watched a whole competition go quiet for the only active purple belts competing because we only had like 3 or 4 Bjj blackbelts in the whole country....now a whole lot of shit has changed in a relatively short Time. we are still babies in bjj, wrestling and MMA in regards to most of the active MMA community.
