Bjarke Ingels Interview: Advice to the Young

Фильм және анимация

Renowned Danish architect Bjarke Ingels here offers his architectural advice to aspiring architects and explains why architecture is fundamentally important for the world we live in.
Bjarke Ingels is considered one of the greatest architects of our time, with projects such as the BIG U, which contains a plan to fortify the whole south tip of Manhattan against future storms and rising sea levels. His architectural vision evolves around a philosophy that could be described as a pragmatic utopianism, combining everyday needs with sustainable solutions to the climatic challenges.
We live in the anthropogenic age, where humans don’t adapt to life, but life adapts to human needs, Ingels explains, which makes his advice to young architects designing tomorrow’s world simple and clear. The key for young architects is to acquire the tools and language to comprehend the human needs outside of the architectural bubble, and understand that they are here to accommodate - and not to be accommodated.
Bjarke Ingels (born 1974) is a renowned Danish architect and founding partner of BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group located in Copenhagen and New York. In 2013 BIG was chosen to redesign the Smithsonian, the world’s largest museum and research complex in Washington, a project which will be implemented over a period of 20 years. His projects include The Mountain, a residential complex in Copenhagen, and the innovative Danish Maritime Museum in Elsinore. In 2004 he received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and the Danish Crown Prince’s Culture Prize in 2011. Moreover, BIG received Architizer’s Firm of the Year Award in 2014.
Bjarke Ingels was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg in New York in December 2014.

Summary: 1) Important thing for the young architect is to care for the people they are designing for. A good design is a careful design and a bad design is a careless design. 2) Architecture is the Art and Science of accommodating life. 3) Young architect should learn the tools and languages to interact with Common people

Aside from the actual content of Ingels' monologue I thoroughly enjoy hearing him speak in a rhythm that reminds me of Bjork's speech patterns. Those wonderful pauses as they both think about what they are about to say in English (not their native tongue).

Interesting speech as always. I like that Bjarke is theoretically pretty adept as well. Just a wee corection...species also optimise their niche, they are simply adapting, they are adapting the context as well. Beavers are ecosystem engineers for instance.

Architecture embodies a people's values, wisdom, mythos, technical knowledge, and distinct culture. It embodies the human soul itself with zero hyperbole. Architecture can/should act as a tool for the spiritual ascension of a people, and as a means to raise their base standard of living. The most important thing you can do is to know and develop yourself, and build upon your knowledge and wisdom - only then will you be able to see the world as it can be, as it ought to be, and begin designing it accordingly. Bit deep... but if you're an architect, then at the very least just design something that inspires people and makes their lives easier. Also, don't be afraid to demolish a beloved dump (cough cough medieval Paris cough cough). Everything can be better. Everything.

I think its just the state of modern architecture, glass towers and replica modern apartment buildings with no style are rife. seems like architects are restricted from interacting with the pulic, people like old architecture for its balance and proportions not cus its old. The complete lack of symmetry is baffling and must only come from minimising costs.
