She looks more relaxed in a bitless but so many outlying factors have changed. Including your relationship with her. It would be awesome if you could ride her two days in a row, one with bit and one without to really see how she does! 😁

Brianna Johnston I have to agree with you. I think it’d be much more comparable and easier to make a solid decision if Lauren had shown two flatting days, back to back in the same environment, with Gabbana being pushed equally as hard in both rides and both rides having the same exercises. A lot can change within two months even in just the way the horse goes about on the flat. So as educational I think this is to look at- it’s fairly unbalanced so people will see the pros in bitless rather than cons, and cons in the bit rather than pros

She was as I expected in both rides. Working harder with the bit because she was being warmed up for jumping and more chilled bitless because it was a chilled ride after a treatment. I think that the fact they were sessions with different intentions had more impact than bit or no bit.

Could not agree less

I feel she is more relaxed and supple in her body in the bit less bridle, creating more 'swing' but she loses her uphill balance and hind end engagement, as well as some consistency. Both have pros and cons!

going over the comment section it seems like a lot of people only want to look at the pros of the bitless. the consistency she holds isnt as highly developed, therefore leading to the head popping up and then also behind the vertical on several short instances due to her not being as schooled bitless as she has been bitted for her whole ridden life i’d imagine. in a bit, she appears to have ‘tension’ as about 500 people have put it, which i dont see at all- i see a horse that is in high level of comprehension of engagement. however, bitted vs. bitless is ALL DOWN TO INDIVIDUALS. one horse might not go well where another does. It seems to me that Gabbana is developing her comprehension of bitless whereas the ‘tension’ people are pointing out, seems to just be the horse holding her body and muscles in a different way- it doesn’t appear as a tense horse in my opinion. the way she’s working is influenced by many, many, many outside factors- i encourage everyone in the comment section to bear in mind that you CAN bit without pain, if there’s anyone thinking now that bitless is the only answer. i myself use a leather d-ring bit. it’s the only bit that i could find to get my horse’s brain calm enough to work. he took me for a run in a bitless bridle, wouldnt stop tossing his head in a hackamore- it’s all down to individuals. every horse is extremely different, just like human beings. what you like, your horse might not like.

"What you like, your horse might not like." Preach it! People seem to forget that what they think is right for their horse, doesn't necessarily reflect what the horse likes. If they like a bit, or bit less, do what makes them comfortable!

Its because her horse got treatment...

To me she looks more engaged in the first clip and more consistent in the contact. She looks in general like she carried herself more uphill with the bit.

Definitely. She appeared maybe more relaxed bitless (but also many factors changed) however much less uphill and slow in comparison to the first clip. I would probably say she was just less forward and engaged that day, and as she said she didn’t push her as hard either

I think their a pros and cons of both and you must do what is best for your horse and you as a rider. Like you said the type of schooling and the environment you are in are completely different. Not to mention the time difference between the clips may favour the bitless as her schooling and the relationship will have developed over this time. Excellent video!

My mentor used to say that it doesn't matter what you put on your horse's head, it's what you put in it. A well refined western bridle horse, the rider won't be pulling on the horse anyway so the bit causes no discomfort to the horses. I work at all kinds of things to get my horses in a yielding frame of mind. I'll lead them both forward and backward by the tail, or the mane. My thoroughbred, I can stop and back her with her mane. It's nice to have some little things like that working. I watched some guys from Tennessee who graze stockers. They ride out bridleless and rope and doctor cattle. Those horses know their job. You are a nice rider. Thank you for the video.

I think this shows how important it is to try different bitted and bitless options to find what your horse goes best in, not just settle as there are sooooo many bits and bitless options out there each horse should be able to find its perfect one xxx

This is so interesting, however I’d never be able to ride bitless on my own horse. The bit we currently use on him is relatively soft and has copper rollers on the mouth piece since he can’t focus too well and this usually occupies him and gives me his entire attention. This works really well for him, I did try him bitless once and to didn’t end well- he hated the pressure being put in his face by the noseband and this caused him to panic (he hates getting pressure put on his face, I’ve had him for five years and only now has he let me put both my hands on either side of his face at once)

Claire Stella some horses are different and I feel as though people who go crazy for bitless don’t see that every horse is different. We tried lots of different types of bitless bridles on my horse after his tooth got taken out but he hated them all so we just waited for it to heal to put in a bit which he likes so much better.

I've personally never ridden bitless. As a Youngling I imagined which I would prefer. The idea of pressure at all on such area of my face or actually at all on my face grosses me out. I totally assumed it was a horse by horse preference necessity decision. Watching mostly Arabian horses in the Middle East vidz: I become rather uncomfortable at the tension applied and to the degree it's applied. I've never asked or desired the Arabians I've ridden to perform the tasks in the vidz to which I refer. I don't expect if I did I would be comfortable applying such tension. Although, I have seen vidz wherein such tension did not exist with a bit. Now that I'm talking about it I'm considering the structure and function of particular breed's natural flowetry and so after all that I still expect it to be a horse/horse/human/necessary task relationship acceptance. Were I a horse I'd kill you attempting to bitless me. Also if kill you if you bitted me terribly. (Sorry. I'm bored and I'm going for it. The following is Me as a horse.) Evi Marioli of course you're right. But I, for example, better like working at relaxing horse, because I didn't have to do very much and horse know that he has to work and he's not heavy etc. Bit less and with bit you can work abort "perfection"

Agreed. But warming up for jumping is a very forward thinking kind of warm up. When she was bitless it was just for a fun ride, so she wasn’t being asked a lot. Would love to see her warm up the same in a bit and then again bitless to see how she does. Saying that, let’s assume the reason she was more up was because of the bit. That’s hardly a bad thing. She isn’t in pain, just more forward because of a working mindset. And her carrying herself properly will help prevent accidents and keep her working longer, whereas if she decided to do a lazy quote on quote “relaxed” canter to a jump to get an ugly stride, it could end badly :)

She looks more heavy in the bitless vs the snaffle, like she doesn't rock back as much.. still fluid in motion just heavy, ( don't know how to explain it better) as it would all come down to feel really.

You explained it perfectly, definitely much less engaged bitless, but may not necessarily be from the tack change (could just be from the chill ride after the treatment and she wasn’t pushing her as hard, difficult to tell what the factors really were)

She certainly looks softer in the bitless, less like she's rushing. In the bitted videos she looks like she's really hanging on the bit and obviously without that there she has nothing to rely on so she's carrying herself more softly. Really interesting comparison. No right or wrong just lots of different methods to keep it interesting for you and her.

She looks more behind the vertical in the bitless, and she's not as active behind in the canter. But it's not really comparable as the clips are very different in my opinion. There are not really a lot of good angles in the second in terms of longer, straighter distances, which feature in the first clip. Also, the activity you're doing is so different. Warming up for a jump lesson is so different to just exercising a horse a day after a treatment.

I think this is a wonderful training video. Gabanna is such a beautiful mover. I believe the proof would be when jumping a course, and how strong the horse gets while jumping. I have seen many horses in FEI jumping classes that use a bitless bridle, but not many. It truly depends on the horse. I also believe that one day of each, with a bit and without can't show the true picture. But, as I said, this is a wonderful video idea!!

One of the smoothest walk to canter transitions I've seen

I would say it you who is the difference. In one you are working her towards warming up for jumping. The other you are riding after a treatment..Two different types of work sesession

She reminds me of my horse a little. We’re trying to coax him to bring his poll up at the trot because he looooooves to hang a little more on the bit and have a lower head set (which he looks amazing still, but you can feel he’s not engaging like she should and is taking the easy way out lol). I do a lot of what you’re doing with the halts and immediately picking up the trot and switching between gaits to keep his mind going and making him sit on his hind end. I’ve only ever tried a fuzzy hackamore with a low shank on him, but maybe he’d appreciate a dr. Cooks or something!! Thanks for the video. 🤩

She looks better bitless, the posture and everything and the way you ride just looks a lot better

I would say she looks 'relaxed' in the bitless rig because she's on her front end and being lazy in the rear. Horses usually like to mosey along like this, it's less effort. With the bit she frames up better between your seat and your hands, putting her in a place where she is reaching and driving from the rear.

My first impression: she seemed more tense in the bit and more relaxed without it, but my original look I see actually more in change in your riding actually! You look more relaxed in the bitless clip as well. I actually kind of like her frame in the bit for jumping, her frame without the bit is okay for flatting but would be too downhill for my preference when jumping.

Can't believe it's a same horse, so relaxed.

Great concept. I think I'll do something similar for myself after my young ones are started. I think a better/truer comparison would be riding 3days in a row, doing a similar pattern of movements- ie. one day with usual? tack (bridle with flash strap, bit & martingale), one day with bridle & bit but no flash strap or martingale & one day in the bitless. Walk, trot, canter in both directions, throw in some transitions & a bit of lateral work each day, then compare. For what it's worth I'm not pro or anti bit or bitless- I ride in bits since I do dressage, but also ride a lot in a halter & thus bitless because I'm too lazy to want to clean muddy tack :p

Me: It snowed in Belgium? 10 miliseconds later-Me:No dope, that's that awesome fiber footing (which we actually have at one of my barns that was imported from Belgium). If I had to say, I think the footing is a bigger thing. Many people don't realize how exhausting deep sand is to work in. That fiber footing is amazing! But regardless of what I see, ultimately it's your decision and you have to use what works for you/your horse. I'm curious to see her with a bit in the same environment :) But she looks AMAZING! She also looks like a power house! That stride!!

She looks a lot more relaxed with the bit less bridle but again we are not sure if it’s cause if the tacos it’s self or the factors of like being in a different place etc.... but overall you guys seem to be doing incredibly well 😭 ❤️

I think each piece of equipment is appropriate for the intended type of work. Relaxed work is lovely for the bitless and more intense work with the bit. She looks lovely in both.

I have a question. All the bitless bridles I've seen have this cross-over... so contact that would normally be from the left side of a bit to the left hand, on a bitless appears to go from the left side of the head to the right hand. What impact does this have? I ride with just ever-so-slight contact... literally could arch my horse around my legs and the tip of my pinky finger, but I always maintain just the slightest bit more contact on my outside rein to keep my horse upright and bending in the proper fashion. I'd like to try bitless, but looking at the mechanics of how the bridles are made, I don't understand how this will impact my training. I don't want to buy another expensive bridle just to find that it's counterintuitive to my training. Any information and opinions are welcomed! Thank you.

So I have a question. I dunno if it's a stupid question, but yeah. Referring to one of your previous vids, "After Exercise Horse Care Routine", when you were rubbing and patting Gabbana to increase blood circulation, I was wondering if there was something that might have the same effect. Specifically, something similar to the Tough-1 Rubber Jelly Massage Mitt. With the rollers on the mitt, I was wondering if it might have the same or similar effect to increase the blood circulation, or maybe it just has a completely different use.

She looks more relaxed bitless and is way more willing to drop her head. It could be that it’s in a different country and that work she had done had helped. But she seems very relaxed. Same thing happened with my horse too, one day I brought a hackamore out and rode him in it, and I won’t go back.

I recently went bitless as well due to the breed of my horse (standardbred pacer). She enjoys it a lot and there is no confusion, no shaking of her head, better communication, thinking after each request (licking her lips) and so relaxed. Being an ex- Amish buggy horse, she didn’t understand woah, so I found out by accident one day that all I have to do is sit back in the saddle and she slows or completely stops. She also backs up now being bitless with little pulling on the reins. With a bit, she would shake her head, stomp, or go forward in a circle. So we are more safe and relaxed bitless 💗

Honestly. To me. It just looks like shes happier in her work in the new place. Plus all this shows me is that you ride incredibly well and shes happy with you.

What bitless bridle did you use

Because the environments that the horse is worked in are quite drastically different, the comparison may not be accurate. From what I can tell, she works well in both bitted and bitless, but her hind looks more engaged and head set is more consistent while in the bit. She looks more relaxed in bitless but not as focused. Overall, it is up to what your horse works and responds to best in. :)

i want to look into the effects of different bits on a horse (showjumping type bits and such) anyone have info on that??

She looks way more relaxed throughout her whole body while bitless, especially in her neck. You two look great! Have you decided if she is going to compete bitless or will you only do bitless when doing flatwork?

I may be wrong but I don’t think you’re allowed to compete bitless. I know that is how it works over here in Canada, you typically Aren’t allowed to ride bitless in shoes

Claire Stella this will vary on region and your chosen discipline.

I think both options are great, it just truly comes down to rider and horse, and what works best. Bitless can be great with a sensitive and aware horse, but not so great with an easily distracted, and ‘immune’ horse. Bits can be great too, and are looked down upon all too often because of the reputation bad riders have given them, and misunderstanding. People often forget how tough our horses are, and what hurts us, will not affect them on the same level. Bits are really good for highly excitable horses, especially during large events, or a new environment. Bitless is great, no doubt, but so is the bit itself. Whatever helps a rider and horse connect best.

I think shes awesome both ways!

I'd love to see a comparison that's more recent and when you are riding for the same activity and know that you've had time for more practice in the bitless option, too. I understand that it was a post treatment stretch but in the bitless she does seem more on the forehand than "stretchy" but obviously she will be pushing her nose into the pressure if she isn't used to it... she's such a dude though! Have you jumped her bitless at all yet?

Personally I prefer Gabbana ridden with the bit, 'cause her trot seems more powerful and the hind legs more engaged

Evi Marioli i wouldn’t say relaxed. What she was is lazy. In the first clip she has a working mindset. She uses her body properly and is warming up to jump some fences. In the second, she’s having a fun day. Sure, she still looks gorgeous. But her hind end isn’t nearly as engaged, and she doesn’t have enough energy. She often got a little on the forehand, and she couldn’t seem to find and keep a consistent headset as she often dropped behind the vertical. In both clips she was relaxed, but in one she was ready to work, whereas in the second she was being a little lazy, because it’s easier to carry herself like that. Nothing wrong with a lazy day every once in a while, but be careful not to mistake lazy for relaxed

Why is it ok to put a piece of metal in a horse's mouth, but not to other animals or even humans? a horse trained well and used to bitless riding is just as good. Y would you put a piece of metal in your partner's mouth. Just so you feel in control? Just for control? I don't think this is how a friendship or partenership works.

I feel like bit less shows others how much control you have over you're horse along with you having you're horse comfortable

I get why people say bitless is better, but I don’t think it is for every horse. Do I believe in using lots of equipment and harsh bits? No. But I used to ride a horse that you could only ride bitless on the trail. He didn’t like the kind of contact with the bitless, which is why we could only hack him in it. (When we hacked it was a relaxing time and he didn’t always have to be on the bit or in perfect frame. ) I ride him 2 or 3 times bitless in a lesson. Lots of head shaking, resisting pressure, and general annoyance was prominent. When in his normal bit (either a bit with short shanks or some sort of double jointed copper bit, can’t remember the names of the bits. He didn’t wear the shanked one when jumping), he was always seeking contact and seemed genuinely happy. I really think it depends on the horse if you should go bitted or bitless, but all in all, great video!

Interesting to watch but as Lauren said this is in no way a completely fair comparison. I don't really believe there is a way to do it 100% fairly, as you almost certainly ride with one more than the other, and regardless, it depends on the horse. Some horses prefer bits, and some prefer bitless. (And some prefer bitless but ride better in bits :D ) I think it should always be tested on your horse (and for some time) before you make a decision.

I feel like bitted bridles are better than bitless, because with bitless (More specifically bosals) I feel like they put more pressure on the nose, which for me, not sure about horses, I don't like a single bit of pressure near/on my nose, and with bitted bridles you sometimes have more control over the horse. (Can become abusive if the bit is not used properly, so im not going to say all bits are bad, some of them just are more severe)

where she breaks at the poll are very different between the two bridles. Her shoulders look much free-er in the bitless as well.

Important thing is tho how do you prefer her?

She looked like she worked better and more comfortably with the bit. The bitless was less consistent. Now let’s wait for somebody to comment how bits are abusive and you should never use one. 😂 it’s not what you want to ride in, it’s what your horse wants to ride in. If your horse prefures and works better bitless, fine. But don’t tell others to do it as well! My horses hate bitless, as they don’t like the pressure on the nose, and would rather have it spread out on the soft tissue in the mouth. But I know a person who had to switch to bitless because that’s what the horse worked better in. Nice riding, that lower leg is everything! 👏👏👏

I think they both look beautiful. This is just my opinion but I also think that she looked more rounded in the bitless and more natural moving. But I do think her frame was a bit better in the snaffle.

I think we should also consider her lifestyle changes -- she goes out more and maybe with other horses too ? she may be more relaxed in general too !!

I am getting a mustang from one of the US holding pens and I will be training the horse completely bitless the horse will never have a bit because I believe the bit is not a needed piece of equipment you can ride just as effectively without a bit as you can with one so why use a bit

I heard a trainer say, if you can lead your horse in a halter and the horse responds, you don’t need to use a bit. Some horses are extremely forward and I’m not sure if bitless would be a good idea. Each person and horse are different.

I would choose bitless because a horse's mouth is very sensitive and a bit adds a lot of pressure.

I guess if you want to change things up once in a while, ride bitless, to get a relaxed ride. But she seems to engage her hind quarters more with the bit.

Also this horse likes to lean and duck below the forhand, Im seeing that issue much more on the bitless

Couple things you cant decide weather or not to go bitless based on a single horses example, all horses are different and not all will end up thriving in a bitless like some will

Guys everyone who is saying its a different ride etc What do you expect when introducing a new piece of tack to a horse? Of course you start off easy. And I am not really pro bitless or anything let people use what they like. Who knows if bitless is suitable for what she does in a snaffle for her. An easy ride is perfect for introducing new tack.

Oh my lord the cottonwoods 🙄 They tore my butt up this year and it was horrible! Ours wasn’t even as bad as your arena!!

Honestly I think there is no need for a bit if somebody can ride a horse without a bit why ride with a bit it makes no sense you just put your horse through more discomfort. But I mean. I don’t get it the tack some people use on their horses saying it doesn’t hurt them or not I just still dont get it.

This isn't really a fair comparison. One ride shes being ridden forward and warmed up for jumping, the other you are just having a casual flat ride. I personally found bitless she was more relaxed but not working as correctly or as hard (but again, different type of ride).

She looks much more through and relaxed in her body bitless, her body swings more and her neck holds less tension

I personally believe in bitless riding. Sometimes when people switch their riding looks very different but you and Gabana look great bitless and she looks softer and more relaxed.

She is working so much nicer over her back bitless. She is so relaxed through her neck and is so round over the back. She has a lovely swing going that i haven't seen before! Really stunning. Bitless is obviously working for her! I have not ridden bitless bu the change in her is really amazing, very interesting!

Yes definitely would be interesting to see another session in her bit after this! :) Definitely could be due to the factors you mentioned. Like I said I’m not a bit less rider myself (not one of those people that really push for bitless at all!) but whether the change is due to the removal of the bit or other factors it’s still impressive to be able to have a horse this supple and responsive in a bit less bridle regardless. I doubt I would have this much control in saying that I have. It tried hahah. If you are able to go bitless with this much success why wouldn’t you! :)

doing that much aggressive shit with a horse kind of seems like abuse to me. more like an owner-slave relationship rather than a friend-friend relationship. I wonder if the horse is happy prancing around in circles every day so the rider can get some ribbons. I doubt it.

Bitless - more relaxed/calm and focused. Since you have been riding her she used to have a little bit of a looky loo every once in a while but haven't seen any in Belgium or Holland (wherever you are). There are a few times were her head gets too low and past the vertical (just my opinion). Transitions are ultra smooth. Bit - she is mouthing it a lot but not going against you. She seems to go past the vertical a lot more (just my opinion). Transitions are smooth but different. I would say BITLESS for the win. Can't wait to see the jumping videos. (If it were me I would still put G in her bit just for a tune up every once in a while)

Hmm.. it looks like it's in pain with the bit and noseband. Much better without😊

Of course she's not that engaged bitless, she's doing easier, not so engaging work , to me i prefer a relaxed horse who can engage and do the same as a bitted, more focused horse in the equal settings (it's a pitty so much has changed between the two rides, so it's not a great reference) .

It takes months to make a horse go perfect bitless if they go in bits normaly, not a fair reprencentation!🥰

She’s way way happier bitless

This is such heavy-handed riding. Is it dressage? Doesn't look comfortable fir the horse and it makes me sad.

She’s a gangly unfortunate looking horse. Very on the fore hand. Everything seems very stiff including your riding. arm seat chair position with stiff hands. Fight between you and her head. If you brought her for jumping leave her head alone. dont be concerned with how she looks. In my opinion she is too much horse for you (size wise and how she should be ridden) and your riding looks a lot worse when you ride her. She’s a big horse and nice soft bit that will get her siting on her hocks and off of her front where she looks very uncomfortable will do wonders for her and her back!

this horse looks miserable. His head is bowed down like he's tied down with no freedom to relax.

Kate you don’t even know if the bit was hurting her in the first video. Hell, the bit could’ve been rubber and you wouldn’t even know.

As Lauren points out, she’s not pushing her anywhere near as hard in the bitless videos so that might be why she’s more relaxed. And bits don’t hurt horses. Riders who misuse equipment do. Any rider with harsh hands could hurt a horse with a bitless bridle, so don’t be so black and white with your bits are bad stance.

The schooling sessions were different. The two clips are months apart so Lauren’s relationship has changed. Gabanna will have only improved over this time and become stronger. Lauren said this canter is better than yesterday, maybe she was more relaxed due to a treatment or just by coincidence. The different environment, gabanna may have been tense due to being excited around jumps. Lots of different factors influence both clips, pain is not one of them.
