Yeah I would always just kick with my inside heel when that would happen!

Years ago, my instructor told me to imagine that my whole body was a “Turning Barber Pole”. Follow 2/2 beat; turn-turn/straight-straight

YES! I recently had this revelation! If you turn your shoulders in the degree of your turn with your seatbones plugged in, your legs and reins end up in the correct position. The old Mary Wanless Barbershop pole analogy works. Bending and turning becomes pretty effortless!

Hi Alecia: I love the phrase " Turn the Saddle'. I practiced with my Friesian in 2013 trying turn him turning with my inner thigh and I literally strained my inner left thigh muscle. My current 5 yr old is bad going to the Right. I am constantly doing your Snowman exercise and have also been working on Turn on haunches moving his shoulders around. Thank you 😊

Great explanation. I ride an Irish Draught. He leans in on his bad rein. I’m tiny he’s massive and very heavy in the hand. Any help is appreciated.

@@colleenchartier3680 yes! The horse should bend in the body and look where they are going. So you will use your wrist and ring finger on the inside to indicate flexion and get the horse looking where they are going. You just don't actually make the turn from the inside rein.

Taught myself that when I had a contracted loan of a horse. He would nap, footplant, fall out through the shoulder, buck and that was while just being in the school. Best work I ever got out of him was on warm down and in walk riding him on the buckle. Just seeing how my bodyweight, a dipped shoulder, head turned a little more, pressure changes in my lower leg steered him. Chin above shoulder and shoulder dipped low down so all weight was to his inside and he could turn a very small circle. He would walk straight down a centre line, diagonal line, lovely serpentines, volte, teardrops. Loved working with him like that. Having to do a bit of that with new horse because he does some lovely work in trot and then leans and speeds up. Trying to figure out why he leans, because if I all of a sudden give him the reigns he doesn't suddenly reach down and forwards to find the bit to lean on again. The leaning isn't him, horses don't lean on the bit it is humans that make them do it. He is a work in progress for me. Only enjoying 35% of the riding but we will get there.

That instruction was fantastic. I’ve never heard that before. ‘Your seat’ yes, but not in detail. I’ve heard of turning my outside shoulder in the direction I want to ride, which in turn changes my seat.

YES!! I have the same issue with left lead canter. My horse immediately starts drifting out to right and it takes a lot of outside aid to turn. Riding a pentagon or hexagon is a great option for both of us - it allows me to use outside aids then relax and go straight. We've had many years of bad habits. Thank you Amelia!!

Incredibly helpful! Love that imagery. I struggle to prepare the horse I ride for an up coming turn without sending the message to turn to early, but when I wait I end up asking him too late to turn. I really want to be able to ride a nice round 20 meter circle.

I just realized I had been using the rein only when turning. And of course, the problem of balance arises all the time. Turning the saddle with hexagon can be my savior. Thanks a lot for the great tip!

Walk Quarter turn on haunches in a box is a great exercise. I do this most training sessions. Great walk work tool. Can do it at trot & canter with more advanced horses.

I had the best flatwork session tonight in ages. I concentrated on looking up and turning the saddle with an open inside rein at times and incorporatinga lot of deliberateshoulderfore fromwatchingyourothervideo. An earlier comment about thinking of the inside leg as a pole really helped too. I didn't think I was using my reins to turn but have been struggling with uneven contact lately esp on right rein and it just was a non issue tonight so I guess I was. Very helpful; thank you Amelia.

This is so helpful because This is exactly my problem. Can’t turn my mares nicely enough to canter to the left because they drift out too much. Thanks for this , I think I’m doing it correctly but obviously not! I will keep working on the turn and release and more outside aids! Thanks again for sharing this with us!

Thanks a lot! Very good exercise to horse and to student. I usually put the whip between my thighs to demonstrate to students who to turn the horse firstly by legs then by hands.

This was really helpful. I definitely have the most trouble turning to the left. Will try the pentagon/hexagon idea of turn, release. I also think some times that perhaps I'm doing something with my balance that is causing my horse to be confused about where we are going or for him to be unbalanced, which makes it difficult for him to turn on a nice circle. I'm trying to stay balanced as well.

Thank you so much Amelia for all your helpful advices! I was wondering if you ever considered purchasing a drone for having some top shots of your demonstrations. I've got the feeling it could be very relevant about the bending of the horse (personnally I've got some troubles figuring out it my head how the horse is meant to properly bend). Of course I know it surely is expensive and could be very noisy and frightening for the horses, but who knows :)

Thank you for providing such great content! I always watch your videos before my lessons and my trainer lets me try your exercises, makes sure I’m doing it somewhat correctly, etc. I like this exercise and also your Inside Leg to Outside Rein video was amazing as well. I grew up riding for years and then was away from horses for over 20 years and am back now… I only really started riding more regularly again a couple months ago. Although I felt at ease on a horse’s back again instantly, I completely forgot so many basics… so I’m relearning them now and I’m also brand new to dressage, coming from a hunter / jumper background. Wow!!! Your videos are absolutely amazing. I am also finishing two green rescue horses and am taking riding lessons regularly to help me with that. I’m teaching them dressage as well as myself. When I first watched one of your videos everything clicked instantly!!! I rode one of my green horses that evening effortlessly and he listened to every single thing I asked him to do and it was such a joyful ride because I wasn’t confused so neither was he. I am eternally grateful for your clear, concise explanations!!! Thank you so much for these. They are life-changing for me, truly. I can’t wait for my next lesson so my poor trainer can see the difference and hopefully will be pleasantly surprised, lol. 😂😂😂 THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!! ☺️❤❤❤

Oh my goodness Amelia this makes so much sense. I can see myself with using my reins, where I cross over the neck with my rein to assist in the turn 😮. I even did exactly that today several times, not being conscious of my hand movements. Poor LuLu she must be soo confused 😢❤❤

A lot of people forget the release! It is important to allow the horse to respond to the aid.

Both sides. To the left we drift off. To the right we drift inwards. Yes that's why i don't do alot of circles. Which would help me if i could i'm guessing.

looking forward to trying this tomorrow. The horse I've on use to be an Amish cart horse so he kicks his head and shoulder out and I often get caught up drifting sideways when trying to get a tad straighter. So much the learn, thank you for using simple terminology so us new riders can understand
