Hang on. Skyfall is not by Ian Fleming. It was written long after his demise by someone who didn't know anyone you mentioned. And Sir Fleming said he named James Bond after the book on his shelf at Goldeneye (his home in Jamaica, just east of St. Anne's Bay/Ocho Rios): Birds of the West Indies by James Bond. You can still buy that book on Amazon. It's in its fourth edition. It has hummingbirds on the cover, and if you've ever been in Goldeneye, you know the hummingbirds are all over the place. So I'm not sure where you got the intel Bishop Barron, but Ian Fleming has nothing to do with your interpretations of the movie Skyfall, and there is no Bond family in Scotland that has anything to do with the naming of James Bond 007. Sorry. =) It is a well thought out logic you have there, and very inspiring. Thank you for the other good stuff in there. I'm a gonna stay here though. Good luck there!

He doesn't break the water with the flare, he uses it to see where the hole was that he made when he shot the ice. But I still see your point. Also the storyline ideas are nothing to do with Fleming, since he never write a book called Skyfall or has any scenes in his books which are put into this film, it was an original plot line. But still, an interesting look at the film.

Coincidentally, I watched your The Silence commentary immediately before this. How interesting that, in Britain, in the same century, priests had "priest-holes" to hide in to evade persecution and death, while in Japan, Christian laity were dying for their faith and priests were apostacising!

Dear Father...Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing Father...Father I have two doubts? I was born a Catholic and I got into serious faith just 4 years ago (am 22 now) I tend to be more of a perfectionist and at times the term "Fun" seems to be contradictory to the faith...Father what does "Fun" really mean? The second is that when I watch a movie at times sexual scenes come over and I tend to feel guilty when I view it, what's the problem here father? and do they make u impure?

He's not calling it intentionally placed there. A whole lot of tropes that find their origins within Catholicism are so deeply ingrained in our culture that we use them without even thinking of their origins. It might not have been deliberately done (unless the world became Catholic last night ^_^), but it is still there, and it's worth pointing it out to show that the Church quite literally built Western Civilisation.

I can't wait for Fr. Barron's review of Deep Throat, "Well, what we have here are the obvious Christian themes of surrender and acceptance. One need look no further than the name of the lead character, Linda Lovelace... We know that Love is central to all Christian teaching, so the influence of Christianity here is undeniable." If he can turn a Bond movie into a work of Christian inspiration, Deep Throat can't be far behind. I've not seen either movie, but his reviews will suffice ; )

By order of his Bishop, Father Barron's job is to evangelize the Culture. Thus he has to engage in it as did Jesus himself and the 12 Apostles. They went into pagan towns to convert and preach the Good News, Father Barron too has to do this, go into the culture. However, unlike people of less courage, myself included and maybe you we stay in prayer and do not engage in mass culture, it would scare us. But nothing seems to scare Father, he can look the devil in the eye and call him by name.

Two problems here: 1. Scotland and England were totally separate countries in Elizabethan times (there was no "Britain" until the Act of Union in 1707), so Elizabeth I's police state had no say about what went on in Scotland. The English protestant reformation and the Scottish protestant reformation were separate and different historical events. 2. What is a priest doing going to "the movies"? ;-)

You do realise there is no connection between Fleming and Skyfall apart from Bond and M.. Skyfall is a 2012 creation by Mendes, Craig and Eon. Also Elizabeth I would have no jurisdiction in 16th century Scotland. They were two separate countries back then.Interesting theories though.

Well, baptism means literally "to overwhelm", and is considered a foreshadowing of Christ's death (going down) and resurrection (coming up). Hence why water is poured three times in Catholic celebrations (never been to a full dunk, so no comment on those). So, it actually does fit pretty well (and not being a Catholic, I'm not surprised you're not familiar with this sort of theological meaning).
@davidnaas836611 жыл бұрын
And... here's one he missed-- in the movie ELIZABETH staring Cate Blanchet (1998), Daniel Craig played a minor role as a Catholic priest sent to assasinate Elizabeth I. Anyone for irony here?
@lawwellsy11 жыл бұрын
You don't need a priest to answer either question. First up, fun is very Catholic. Anyone who says you can't have fun to be a good Catholic is just trolling you. We're all for the good things in the world, so long as that which is best, namely God, is always loved above all other things. G.K. Chesterton loved to do this sort of thing, and for a more modern example, check out Catholic Memes on Facebook, Tumblr and so on.

Father, I would ask you a totally out of context question: Is playing Card Games, Like Magic: The Gathering, a kind of sin? I am asking this because you seems to separate very well the Fantasy on the Culture to the reality of the Gods Teachings. I will be very glad to hear yout position on this theme. Thank you for your time.

@farore12311 жыл бұрын
Ian Fleming named the character after an ornithologist named James Bond, and not a catholic family that he knew when he was a child. There is an interview on youtube where he mentions it. Additionally, the character of James bond is an amalgamation of many secret agent types that Fleming had met throughout WWII. Indeed, much of Bond even comes from Fleming's own character. For example, both were Commanders in the Royal Navy... I feel you are grasping at straws.

As for the sex scenes, they don't make you impure unless you let them. Only when you accept the devil's hint that sex like that (i.e. unmarried one night stands) is OK do you sin yourself. Believe me, I've had the same questions on purity and sin (similar background, similar journey). If you've got a solid faith, I'd say you'd be fine. And you'll probably hear the same from a priest. After all, Fr Barron saw it, didn't he? ^_^

Small problem: Scotland is not known for recusant families and priests' hiding holes in Catholic manor houses. That was exclusively in England because of the way Henry's 'reformation' proceeded. The Protestant Reformation in Scotland had entirely different characteristics. No hiding holes - as far as I know. The great thing about these talks is that - like any university professor (which Fr Barron is) - he sometimes gives us some of his more relaxed reflections. It's good to be in his class!

Mind = blown. Also, I never realized Javier Bardem is in everything. Did you notice that?
You should do a review of Millers Crossing. There's some very interesting themes in that movie and I would be interested to know whether you picked up on them.
That's cool. I didn't know that about English history.
The full title of that book is "Catholic Birds of The West Indies".
I hope Father Barron does a commentary on Trigun.
Are many priests big movie buffs?

Depends on the priest, just like with laypeople. A chaplain I knew didn't like the very idea of watching movies, but then you have Bishop Barron here.
We are promised that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church Christ founded, but this old institution is getting closer and closer to the hell-fire. Thank God for priests like Father Barron!

Indeed! Ecclesiastical rank is never a definitive bar to gauge one’s friendship with God
The real name of the spy James Bond is actually Richard Fleming. A relative of Ian.
This video is infinitely more interesting and coherent than the movie was.
Wasn't there a shoot out in a small church (in the movie)?
Fr. Barron, Who was your favorite Bond?
You probably know this, but one of the Bond films is called the World is Not Enough. Just thought I would say. :^)
Not motto, Father, hobby. Bond: Everybody needs a hobby. Silva: So what's yours? Bond: Resurrection.
It took me awhile to realize that I am a 007 fan.
Hello Father; I'm just wondering, where did you get the bust of Dante? I've been looking for one.
He did not break the ice with the flaier he used it to se where the hole in the ice was
Fr Barron is simply musing on a few ideas that occurred to him seeing this movie. He's not making any outright claims for the various allusions.
2. What is a priest doing going to "the movies"? ;-)
Do one on The Godfather. That's a biggie.

They were seperate countrys, however mary, queen of scotts may as well have been a puppet queen.
You DO realize that Skyfall was a 100% original story from EON films, not based on the original Ian Fleming novels, right?
Father, why not do a commentary on the election?
Always enjoy your videos. I've stolen my best homily material from them. Have you seen Life of Pi yet? It wasn't on my to do list, but a parishioner recommended it, and I think you might find some grist for the mill here. Peace
And... here's one he missed-- in the movie ELIZABETH staring Cate Blanchet (1998), Daniel Craig played a minor role as a Catholic priest sent to assasinate Elizabeth I. Anyone for irony here?
Yeah but is there a cool chase scene?
Ian Fleming named the character after an ornithologist named James Bond, and not a catholic family that he knew when he was a child. There is an interview on youtube where he mentions it. Additionally, the character of James bond is an amalgamation of many secret agent types that Fleming had met throughout WWII. Indeed, much of Bond even comes from Fleming's own character. For example, both were Commanders in the Royal Navy... I feel you are grasping at straws.
You should definitely comment on Bronies. It's a thought...
Maybe it was the Cross of St. Peter. My name is Peter btw.

You should watch Death Note.
James Bond. An ornithologist. Not a Catholic. Great commentary though.
I love Catholocism. It's my favourite kind of clandestine global evil. - Stuart Lee
This entire franchise has gone down the tubes. It needs to be passed over to Mel Gibson for directing and Jim Caviezel for the new James Bond. :-) Return the Bond business back to its rightful owners, the Catholics :-)
to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
