In Defense of Bishop Robert Barron W/ Fr. Mike Schmitz

Father Mike and I respond to the flak Bishop Barron has been receiving on his recently expressed view that we may "Dare Hope" that all men will be saved. I share a story that I think illustrates the importance of Bishop Barron's reach and mission. We go on to talk about when it's appropriate to correct public Catholic figures and how to do so in charity.

And here I was thinking Barron was the best thing to happen in a long time. Then his inaction happened. He even contradicts himself while also quoting himself. He says we shouldn't calumny yet he chooses not to hack evil to pieces. Those two actions are described in two separate videos in his youtube channel. The first is about the Devil and the second is about the meaning of Violence in the Bible and HIS interpretation is that when we face evil we always TOY with it and never truly obliterate it. John Paul II call evil for what it was. I believe that is a Polish cultural feature, at least according to a Polish/American Jesuit Priest from Chicago who talks about John Paul II the Polish pope.

Bishop Barron has been incredibly influential in bringing me, my wife, my mother, and my father into Catholicism. He is a very gifted evangelist, and it's disappointing to me that so many over-zealous Catholics think that evangelizing has to be beating someone across the head with a hammer. Calm your zeal and let the Spirit work in people. YOU don't convert anyone; the Spirit converts. "You're going to hell unless you repent and join the Catholic church", is exactly the kind of thing that would have led me to shut the door in their face and look elsewhere.

There should be no shock over hope for universal salvation. This hope goes all the way back to the church fathers. St. Gregory of Nyssa comes to mind. A sophisticated understanding of hell tells you that everyone who is in hell actually wants to be there due to willful isolation from God. It is a logical result of free will. The hope and desire that all creation may come around to willful unity with God is a very Christian and loving sentiment.

  • @HolyKhaaaaan

And as free will is the sole cause of damnation, one is unsure as to how much effort God could or would use to turn the will towards Himself, or what He would consider coercive. Not to mention most people's wills - even the good people! - are motivated at least in part by bad reasoning. We're pretty stupid as a species. I someday would like to write a thesis about the evident stupidity of the human race and present it to God as evidence in defence of the salvation of at least most people.

We are commanded to use our words to lift each other up. I could be wrong (and often am), but this comment in essence appears to me as a reminder to take appreciation of the Bishop's teachings despite issues or controversies - taking a one-sided view and never seeing the middle ground always leads to division, and we certainly don't need more of that. That said, criticism should never be suppressed and nor should the ability respond and correct oneself where needed. But I really like your point. Not enough people are saying it nowadays, even in the liturgy where Mass has on occasions become focused on ourselves rather than the True, Sacred, Divine sacrifice and worship to God alone. But *many* doesn't mean most. The possibility is whether all go or not. Not the possibility of it's existence. @Cortney Nicholson To get very personal with you, I am 25. My first 23 years of life I had abandoned the church because of many traditional types that would condemn me for my parents never taking me to church, eating meat on Fridays and every other little thing I didn't know or understand about the faith. When I met my wife I decided to investigate the church because she was Catholic. And after watching Bishop Barron's videos about this, his wisdom and mercy gave me a new look at the Catholic church and I was confirmed & first communion within 8 months. If "Dare we Hope" can convince a stubborn anti Catholic like me of mercy and bring me back into the fold, maybe God willing we can hope that all will have the same fate. We can hold onto the belief in the possibility and guarantee that if we die in a state of broken relationship with God we will meet our just punishment. But we can hope that All can mend that relationship especially those who don't understand the right path, that is why the last words of the mass are "go forth and share the good news in every you say or do".

@@domhamai Are the photographs people keep of their loved ones statues of politicians and historical figures idolatry? No. Catholics dot worship statues they are there to help us focus on the original person and God our human minds sometimes wander when we are in prayer and we get distractions. Let’s get this right Catholics don’t worship statues this is made clear by the Catholic Church. The statues of Jesus help our minds focus on Jesus the statues of saints help us focus on their lives and good examples. Find in papal bull that does not make it clear that Catholics do not worship statues you won’t find one. Many Protestant Churches have images the Temple in Jerusalem had statues of Angels read the Bible Jesus attended the Temple not once as far as I can see did he say they where idols. Look at the way some people are ignoring Gods command to love God and their neighbour. I have broken Gods laws and commandments haven’t you? That’s because we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God. But if we where not sinners what then? Jesus came to save sinners he made that perfectly clear. What we are to do is follow Jesus his commandments and his laws not the laws of this world. How can Images of Jesus and his blessed mother be idols? Before most where literate images is the way that people learned of Gods message to man. Let’s Get another thing right no Protestant Church would have the Bible if the Catholic church did not preserve it. The Holy Rosary is a very scriptural way of praying it is a walk through the life of Jesus accompanied by His blessed Mother and it scriptural. The Catholic Church is not the Protestant church many priest and forget this fact we agree on many things and disagree on things also. How old are the Protestant denominations? The Catholic Church goes right back to Jesus and the apostles this is a fact. Bible alone without guidance causes division and error this is why God chose to appoint Peter as head of his church and the apostles to preach the good news. The early Christian church was rebuked by the apostles for their error because they needed the guidance of those Jesus appointed. The church is for sinners so we can’t be surprised when we find them in he Church these are the peopleJesus said he came to save. Nor is it surprising that the true church of got would come under immense attack as it is today. We must follow Jesus spread the good news as commanded us to and be prepared to suffer and fight lead by example and pray and forgive others and if necessary take action to protect the weak elderly the disabled and in the Catholic Church this means even to martyrdom.

@@ATLKing404 The idea that only baptized Catholics can go to heaven is not a teaching of the Catholic Church. Can non-Christians go to heaven? This is a complicated topic. To reject Christ is a grave sin. But, as with all sin, there are many things that can affect a person's culpability. For example, an aborted baby never had an opportunity to accept Christ. Does this mean that Christ will send all aborted babies to hell? Obviously not. You cannot reject something you have no knowledge of. For example, I personally hate broccoli. Some people like broccoli. But a person who has never heard of broccoli, or tasted broccoli, can not make a judgment either way. They are simply ignorant. Or suppose that my parents taught me that broccoli was dangerous. It could kill me if I eat it. This would make my acceptance of broccoli much more difficult. Similarly, a young child in Siberia who has never heard of Christ is in no position to either reject him or accept Him.

The Little Number of Those Who Are Saved by St. Leonard of Port Maurice Saint Leonard of Port Maurice was a most holy Franciscan friar who lived at the monastery of Saint Bonaventure in Rome. He was one of the greatest missioners in the history of the Church. He used to preach to thousands in the open square of every city and town where the churches could not hold his listeners. So brilliant and holy was his eloquence that once when he gave a two weeks' mission in Rome, the Pope and College of Cardinals came to hear him. The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin, the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus were his crusades. He was in no small way responsible for the definition of the Immaculate Conception made a little more than a hundred years after his death. He also gave us the Divine Praises, which are said at the end of Benediction. But Saint Leonard's most famous work was his devotion to the Stations of the Cross. He died a most holy death in his seventy-fifth year, after twenty-four years of uninterrupted preaching. One of Saint Leonard of Port Maurice's most famous sermons was "The Little Number of Those Who Are Saved." It was the one he relied on for the conversion of great sinners. This sermon, like his other writings, was submitted to canonical examination during the process of canonization. In it he reviews the various states of life of Christians and concludes with the little number of those who are saved, in relation to the totality of men. The reader who meditates on this remarkable text will grasp the soundness of its argumentation, which has earned it the approbation of the Church. Here is the great missionary's vibrant and moving sermon. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nGSoj9ScYsisZqg.html

peace be with you Bishop Barron was a respected teacher amongst Catholic. This is what makes His Excellency comment so terrible. It is far more dangerous to Catholics to have a respected bishop teach false than a protestant teacher we know teaches false. His does not merely say " Dare we hope" but that "we may reasonably hope that all people will be brought to heaven" There is no evidence for this hope. We may hope for this and pray for it because God wants all me to be saved (2 Tim 2L1-4) but it is no a reasonable one given Jesus's teaching. People have heard the truth from him and will assume this is true. This teaching is as bad if not worse than "faith alone" because it does not even have the requirement of believing in God. Both have a fruit of apathy to love and obedience. And whereas indeed he was the Son of God, he learned obedience by the things which he suffered: And being consummated, he became, to all that obey him, the cause of eternal salvation. (Heb 5:8-9) Bishop Barron has become the banner around which universalist gather to tell us there is no hell. And do not dismiss the carrot and the stick so lightly, Jesus seem to use this in Matt 25:31-46 When I left a comment on His Excellency Bishop Barrons page about the dangers of this teaching he flippantly dismisses me saying He will stop teaching it when the Church stops asking him to pray for it. When I asked him is the Church telling him there is a reasonable hope of it he stopped answering. It is though they what Christ teaching we must find our hope, not in invented ones. Bishop Barron needs to correct this teaching. Please pray for me God bless you

I'd be excited if His Excellency, Bishop Barron, would converse with TnT at some point in the future too, like you guys mention here. Bishop Barron is not an enemy, nor is TnT. The key is to have these conversations to "bridge the gap" between various Catholics, much like you, Matt Fradd, have tried to do with Michael Voris and Timothy Gordon, who are both excellent faithful Catholics. We need dialogue so that we can understand the Faith better ourselves. But certainly to refuse this dialogue and not converse with people who are only trying to defend the Faith, is harmful. With regard to the New Mass, Vatican 2, and His Holiness, Pope Francis, TnT criticizes only those things that are "un-Catholic" or could be seen as hostile to that Faith (such as erroneous statements). This would include desecration of Altar rails in the name of Vatican 2, or the use of Extraordinary Ministers of Communion even when they're not needed. These things are in fact counter to the Church's teaching, but have been pushed by people who misinterpret Vatican 2. With regard to Infiltration, there are actually renowned Theologians and Cardinals who agree with some aspects of the book - would you care to site anything specific in the book that you found obviously false? In that case I would have to do my own research. But it seems to me you may be trying to smear a few good Catholic Theologians (TnT), which would be unfortunate and rather uncharitable.

I converted to Catholicism at 18 and 50 years later still learning. ❤️ As long as we continue saying Yes to God it’s all part of His plan. Bishop Barron, Fr. Mike Schmitz, Fr. Calloway, and Matt Fradd are terrific people to learn from. Years ago I’ve even attended several RCIA classes and now I take Bible studies through Ascension Press. We are all a work in progress.

What if, in dealing with a difficult priest that day, he had lost some patience and had exceedingly scolded the priest, or some such pecadillio. Or if he had committed some other minor offence because he is so busy having to administer his Diocese and is in constant dialogue with constant opportunity to skip up, but with no time for fasting, praying and preparation. • @SowerOfMustardSeed

    @SowerOfMustardSeed

    2 жыл бұрын

@TruthSeeker75 we dare hope hell is empty is a spirituality, rather than a doctrine. Jesus clearly said that many will not pass through the narrow gate. So it is a fact that many died and will die in a state of dispositioning themselves fundamentally misaligned with God, in other words “in hell”. So what’s the purpose of this spirituality that we dare hope hell is empty? The significance is that this is to believe in the power, mercy and love of God that His plan is for everyone to be saved and no one is beyond salvation, even the monsters you mentioned, as long as they repent and accept our Lord before they die. This is the gospels. This is the good news we Catholics should bring to the world! What is the chance that Judas Iscariot, Nero, Hitler, etc. have repented and accepted our Lord before drawing their last breath? Very unlikely. It is because they dispositioned themselves in many ways contrary to God’s way all their lives. This “bad habit” - a habit of sin is never easy to overcome to say the least. So my opinion is that even if or when Jesus appeared to them just before they died, they would likely have grown more angry and repugnant to have found out that they had been wrong all their life. They would probably have been very mad with Jesus why have God made them that way. They would probably have blamed God that it’s not their fault that God didn’t make it clear to them. Et Cetera. Then they couldn’t help but to have freely rejected Jesus. Having said all this. The truth is I don’t know. No one knows except for God. And therefore I can still dare hope that hell is empty. It’s not a doctrinal or matter of fact statement, but a spirituality that strengthens our total reliance on God and our best effort to cooperate with God. I hope you understand now.

Bishop Barron strikes me as a highly intellectual person that is quite open to information and learning not just about the faith but about the world as a whole. He is effective because he doesn't build up walls. He isn't scared to pull in references from today's world to give examples or further explain the catholic position. There's two things. His abstractions are sometimes very theological, profound and require a mind attuned to that type of intellectualism. If you're not into very deep analysis and correlations, you may end up misinterpreting what he says. ALSO, as a species, we have a tendency to prefer the comfort of what is familiar and we surround ourselves with people who share our opinions and views. We end up living in a bubble (ie. confirmation bias). Any window to the outside, any introduction or study of an outside topic, any line of "modern" questioning is seen as the enemy. That type of behavior is contrary to the call to evangelize. In order to invite people in, you have to speak about things they are familiar with. Of course, always inkeeping with Church teaching. For one, I think Bishop Barron does a stellar job at that. His language is precise and he often uses words for their root meaning rather than the implied subtext society has tacked onto them overtime. His writing style is akin to scholarly journals. Also, everything Word on Fire puts out has great production quality. Something more catholic outlets should learn to do (*shutters at the cheesyness of some of our media) Overall, I have learned quite a lot from him and am grateful for his work. Pax domini!

Having read Balthasar's book, I feel compelled to mention that it BEGINS by saying we will all be judged. That is not a "get out of jail free" card by any means. We will be judged. For all their professed piety, Taylor Marshall & Timothy Gordon (neither of whom hold degrees in Catholic theology) will be judged - and who is to say what sins they will need to answer for to Jesus? Balthasar never lets you forget that Hell is a reality. However, his careful examination of Biblical and patristic sources makes it clear that it is God's will is that all will be saved. That is a powerful force to reckon with, and hard for any person to thwart, but it is possible. God will not force Salvation on us. We can still land ourselves in Hell. The key to Balthasar's analysis of the words spoken by Jesus in the Gospels is to distinguish between the pre-resurrection and post-resurrection message he delivers. If you proof-text without attending to the, context, and treat it all as the same, you are tacitly implying that Christ's sacrifice on the Cross had no merit - that the world did not fundamentally changed on Easter morning.

@@dominikpavelic5339 I think it is bible related, though I'm unsure of the scripture reference. It's not to say that God is masochistic, but allows us to be tested to see our true faith in Him. Suffering is one of those things. Many if not all the Saints experienced a "trial by fire" so to speak, (that is a reference from Daniel, when the three, including Azariah were thrown into Nebuchadnezzar's furnace...) Hardships can improve resilience and build character. God builds our characters much the same way. Ex: I want a house...I'm going to earn money, build credit, and save so that I can get the house. I finally get the house, but a pandemic hits and I lose my job, causing me to miss mortgage payments...I then pray for work and the end of the pandemic...etc. God doesn't want bad thing to happen to us, but He allows it, if He sees it making us closer to Him...

I can tell you what he said. I thoroughly challenged Barron on this garbage to the point that he disabled comments on his "hell will be empty videos" Not because imflammatory comments were constantly being made but because I made him look stupid using scripture and the words of the Saints. But his response to someone about Fatima was to attempt to discredit at least part of Our Lady's message by saying "you don't really think Hell is in the center of the earth do you?" Minute 4:40 of this video applies to B. Barron

Yet Mother Mary will teach us to pray the Fatima Decade Pray (O My Jesus), "... lead ALL souls into heaven ...". Somewhere in the cacophony of doctrinal dissonance lies the lost doctrine of the preexistent soul. Deny all you can without calling Our Lady of Fatima heretical.

When I offered my life for the salvation of all humanity, Jesus told me that there is no hope for those who refuse to confess Him before the angels (search the Bible yourself-I'm not your Mama) , and that is one thing He cannot mess with: Free Will.

This fact is conveniently not addressed by the Bishop's critics. Sometimes I think we overthink things. If I were to look any given person and someone asked me if I hope they be saved, I'd say 'yes'. If you extended your hand over 50, 100, 500, 5 million, 7 billion, people and asked me if I hope they be saved, I would say 'yes'. It doesn't that they WILL be saved, but that I pray they will be and I leave the judgment to God, who's judgments are just and trustworthy. I'm confident Jesus hopes and desires all will be saved as well because he died for all men, but He also knows He can't force anybody and out of love He respects their free will. Where is the sin in hoping that all people will drink of the ocean of God's infinite mercy? If they refuse, then we must respect their choice, but otherwise, where is the error in interceding for the salvation of ALL souls. Our Lady of Fatima told us to do it... "Lead ALL souls to heaven..."

Surfdude12 1 Bro you’re being completely pedantic. You may interpret these words this way but Bishop Baron has no obligation to reason according to your pet definitions and analogies. It’s clear from context that he doesn’t advocate dropping the ball on evangelism like a universalist might, so he’s not advocating that we sit on this figurative chair.

I have always understood Bishop Barron's underlying assertion - and this is only MY understanding - to be that the love and mercy of God is such that He could, in theory, purify all souls in a way after death that they would, most likely through a long and arduous process of purification in purgatory, be ready and open to His (Trinitarian) love. Truthfully, I think there are those who are so intransigent in their hatred and rejection of God that their salvation is unlikely. But impossible? Well, I cannot say anything is impossible with God.
