Birth of the Long Furby

Комедия

If you have any questions, feel free to drop a comment BUT please make sure that you read my pinned comment, and browse through the comments to see if your question has been answered, first. I will not reply to questions I have answered.
For clarification, her full name is Princess Fantasia Delirium. This project was heavily inspired by the works of furbyfuzz on tumblr, Strange Aeons, and Somerset Sews.
I bought the spine for my Furby off of eBay. The listing is no longer active, but the spine is listed as a “1/4’ teddy bear armature,” and is 34 inches long.
EDIT: There were some flaws in my build, especially on the construction side. This build was incredibly fast, so I kind of threw construction to the wayside in the process. Here's some comments on what I would improve or change in the future:
1.) Attaching the armature. I attached the armature to the body of the Furby with hot glue, which did not stand up to the test of time. I would potentially secure your armature to the Furby by attaching it to a disc of material first (foam/cardboard/whatever) for an easier time, and/or attaching it with a more permanent adhesive (Barge or Contact Cement).
2.) Additionally, the armature at the bottom of the finished Long Furby was a little awkward. I would recommend adding a disc of craft foam or something similar to the bottom for reinforcement and for a cleaner look.
3.) The seams of the body (specifically in the seam in the middle of the body) did not last over time, either. If you are planning on getting use out of your Long Furby (ie. posing the Furby for photos or anything other than a display item) I highly recommend finishing or at least reinforcing your seams in some way, especially on faux fur fabric. I only used a straight stitch on a regular length for mine, but I would probably use a short length zig-zag stitch if I was making it today.

After a few weeks of this being uploaded, I've gotten a lot of questions about where to buy a spine. The eBay listing I bought the spine from is no longer active, but the spine was listed as a "1/4 ' teddy bear armature," with a length of about 34 inches. CR Crafts also sells many teddy bear spines by the foot for a decent price, or you can check the eBay seller "morezmore," who sells a variety of spines.

@@croissant1631 I'm not familiar with that kind of thing, sorry! from what I've browsed through, loc-line tubing seems to be a bit more expensive, and I'm not sure what it's made of. The armature I bought was made of PVC and completely solid, and while it seems very similar to loc tubing in appearance and its jointed nature, I can't be sure. If you're able to buy the tubing in person and compare the tubing with what I described of the armatures, I would recommend that.

Anyone looking to do this in 2021 you might want to consider searching Etsy or similar for what they call a 'vegan' faceplate. ('vegan' as in no actual furby used, they are 3d printed plastics) Not only are they a whole lot cheaper (mine was like 8 bucks vs 30-50 for a vintage furby) but they are so much easier to work with. Also, they come in different sizes... I got one a bit bigger than a real furby for my 6-footish long boi.

I bought 1/2 a yard of 60" wide fur fabric, which was around $30-35 a yard regularly, so I believe it cost me around $18. I believe Princess Delirium is around 38 inches tall.

Brylee F You could, if you were simply looking for structure, not support. The perks of the 1/4” spine is its circumference, making it easy for me to stand her up and hold up the bulk of her weight. For a 1/8” spine, those seem to be a lot more lightweight, and wouldn’t stay up as easily.

Hey! I have a few questions for you (or anyone in the comments who would want to answer). I'm making a long furby. I found an all black furby with white feet on eBay for $40, and I think it's perfect because I already have black and white fake fur. I am getting a 2 1/2 foot long spines from crs crafts for $10. My questions are: - Is he too expensive? I can't find a cheaper one that's an old version, not a new furby - Is the spine too long/too short? I don't have a lot of money, so I can't afford an extremely long one (as much as I want a long child) - I was planning on painting his eyes like Yin Yang symbols and naming him Yin & Yang. Any other name/accessory suggestions? I don't love the name.

Hi! Thanks for the questions. I personally bought my Furby for $13. This may have been a chance for me, but most Furbies online go for about $30. I'd look around for some cheaper options unless you're deadset on that one. As for the spine, I'd say it's just a little short. My spine was around 32 inches. And for names, I think that's cute! As you make the Furby, I'd look for new names! My name came to me as I was creating Princess Delirium. Enjoy making your Furby!

@@mcmia thank you for replying! I've already chosen a whole new name (Little Sweetmeat, i know its weird lol) and I'm getting a longer spine. My spine will be 30 inches long! Also, for the furby, I need a black one. I need a black one because I already have black fur. So I will be getting the more expensive one (I just can't find any cheaper ones that are all black) but thank so much for ur advice!

I'm confused how you sew the furby to the body with the mechanism part there. How do you attach it to the furby?

  • @mcmia

    @mcmia

    5 жыл бұрын

This is a bit complicated to explain, please bear with me! On the bottom of the furby there is a zip tie held inside a channel of thin cotton, holding the fur to the inside mechanism. I separated the fur from the inner workings with a pair of scissors so that the bottom was independent, and then hand sewed the tube of fabric to that bottom edge. The separation process was meant to be a part of the video, but it was cut. Hope that helps!
