When I was younger my dad would whistle and sing this to me when I was upset or sick and every bad thing in the world seemed to go away. Today is his 52nd birthday! He’s my idol and my hero. One day I hope to sing this song to my son.

+iha asc From imdb / Erland Van Lidth / trivia: "His actual voice wasn't used for the song, "Down in the Valley" in the film. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in 1980, he wasn't able to record the song himself, so they used the pre-recorded track to which he had sung the song during the filming in the final print of the movie." Some of this is confused, even contradictory. Translation: EVL was singing at the filming, not on-mic, but along with a track that included the track's original vocal, to get a precise lip-sych. "His actual voice wasn't used...he wasn't able to record the song himself." The singer on the track, uncredited on the film: Dorian Holley, best known as a backup singer for Michael Jackson in 1987, but an unknown 24year-old when the film was made. (EVL was a bass-baritone, this performance is in the tenor, (Holley's), range.)

My mother used to sing this to me as a child. I've moved across the world and barely get to talk with her anymore and she suffered vocal chord paralysis a couple years ago and it's difficult for her to talk for long periods of time or sing at all. Sometimes when I'm feeling sentimental and missing her, I think back to when she sang this to me. I would have asked her to record herself singing it for me but obviously she can't. No other version I've found comes close to the way she sang it - this version is pretty much spot on and has washed such a wave of nostalgia over me. Thank you for sharing!

When this song was sung in the film, it was sad, peaceful etc. Then that was all crushed when the next scene was at the strip joint.

man, I was 13 when I saw Stir Crazy and THIS is the moment I most remember from it. Even as a 13 year old I remember being stunned to hear this beautiful voice coming from Grossberger and by this suddenly unexpected, poignant and hauntingly beautiful moment in that movie.

I was playing this tonight on my new Fender Accoustic Guitar My beautiful lady got me for xmas. When I finished, the phone rang. It was my father telling me that Gram just passed away in the hospital at 97 yrs old. Although I weep, and it is our loss, comfort comes in the thought that she suffers no more and is with the good lord! Rest in peace Gram, we all miss you already!

Great song and sung well I am 77yrs ole now but I lot me father when I was 7 and my mother when I was just 9 this song is sad but for some reason makes me think of those very short yrs I had with mum and dad. I sing along with it and even wrote a version using that tune about a lady I once loved. always I end it in tears but still I love it.

There are no disputes: Erland Van Lidth sang it using his impressive musical operatic background. 'Nuff Said

sounds like Gene to be frank. Think Willy Wonka boat ride, thats his vibrato, not Van Lidth's powerful operatic voice. It even looks as though he is lip syncing here, though that might just be for cinematic purposes of clarity and what not.

Great Voice, perfect for the tone and range. Some songs such as this, explains the one hit wonder curse! Like acting and the curse of stereotyping! The public can't see or hear the singer or actor, writers other works! The voice was perfect for the song!✌😎✌
