Birmingham is the largest city in the state of Alabama. With more than 1.2 million people in the metropolitan area, Birmingham is the cultural and economic heart of Alabama.
Birmingham is best remembered by Americans as the site of racist violence, bombings, and nonviolent protest in the 1960s, when the city was still racially segregated by law. Visitors today are often surprised to find a pleasant green city of ridges and valleys, with many attractive views and friendly, hospitable people.
Summers are very hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms. Spring and fall are the best seasons for long visits. Even within the city limits, the springtime displays of dogwood, cherry, azalea and other blossoms must be seen to be believed

Fun Fact: Birmingham was offered all of the things that Atlanta had (large airport, big business, corporate offices, designer shopping malls, six flags) but the mayors and leaders at the time turned it down even though birmingham was central to everything southern and they went to ATL, Georgia and they said yes

another fun fact is that walt disney consider buiding disneyworld in huntsville... birmingham, and alabama as a whole was hurt so much, much more than any of the surrounding areas by the civil rights strife.. and yes i know it was self inflicted..and add to that poor do nothing leadership during the 70's,and 80's even into the 90's...that it has just taken the state longer to shake off it;s dark past than georgia,,tennessee, florida,, or the carolnias

When I think of Alabama, it kind of reminds me of the civil right movements in history that took place in the state. And not only that, MLK lived in Montgomery Alabama. Since Alabama is right in the middle of the South, Alabama is what I would call the Southland. Birmingham is named after Birmingham England.

I'd love to live in a mid size city in the south where there's not a huge influx of outsiders. Recently moved back to NC but it's now become so diluted by people not from the south that its lost all its 'feel' in my opinion. People don't even smile at one another anymore. Wondering what B-Ham is like in that regard.
