Birding Winding Waters Natural Area (Florida)

In 2018 I (Derek) traveled to Florida to play a show at FAU. While I was there, I got to visit the Loggerhead Marinelife Center and had the chance to bird some promising locations including Winding Water's Natural Area. My target species include Snail Kite, Limpkin, Black-bellied Whistling Duck, and Purple Gallinule. Will this pristine habitat lead to a successful day or a disappointment?

Jacob Wixom they are amazing! What’s crazy, is that we actually had one show up in Wisconsin a few years ago. Some of the pictures used in this video are actually from that individual. It was a real treat for everyone in the state who saw it.

During my last visit to Florida, I was fortunate to see a common ground dove up close. It landed just near the pool where I was relaxing, and spent a minute or so looking around the patio. I couldn't believe how tiny it was compared to a morning dove.

Great video. I have limpkins in the marshy canal behind my home and they can squak/scream for hours and hours on end all night long.

MJ InFl thanks! Haha, that was not what I expected. How does it compare to Barn Owl calls?

Barn owl sound more like a loud insect where limpkins sound more like screams of something being murdered. It’s loud and high-pitched and goes on for hours.😁
