Bird Photography at Burnaby Lake, Vancouver
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
This is the forth and last of my films on bird photography in Vancouver, Canada.
I am at Burnaby Lake, which at first I was very disappointed with until I got to a short boardwalk out into the water. Here there were birds to be photographed in nice settings and from a variety of angles.
Green-winged teal were easier here than anywhere else I had been and there were even some waders in the form of Long-billed dowitchers. If there had been any light to work with it would be excellent for flight pictures too. Birds were flying back and forth the whole time I was there.

The most common gull I saw while in that area was the Glaucous-wingged Gull, but I really dont know if that was your mystery gull. It has some similarities. I had too much rain to get any good photos, so I'm glad that the sun made a showing for you.

Winter in the Pacific Northwest can be overcast a lot. The overcast is actually the hardest thing for people to get used to. I saw a Wood Duck in with the Mallards too. I love Wood Ducks. Even in fall when the males loose their colorful plumage and look more like a female they are still pretty. Pintails look very dabber to me. That is why when I found a male taking a mud bath I had to take a bunch of pictures of it. Seeing a mud covered Pintail just seemed funny. I didn’t realize that we could get closer here in North America than you can in the UK. I find this very interesting. I thought that it was common for a bird to get closer than your minimum focus distance. That is why I switched to a lens that can focus inside of 4’, just over 1 meter. Great video and I hope you enjoyed your trip.

Birds are much harder to get close to in the UK. British bird photographers discovered Florida in the 1980s and could not believe how tame birds were. The whole continent is the same.

Thank you, Mike, for another excellent video. I love photographing ducks, especially ducks in flight. There is a five-acre pond in a park very near our home. It also has some good wetlands around it to attract different types of wading birds as well several other species. Lots of photo opportunities there most of the year.

Another video to save in my Playlist. I thought you made an interesting observation. Why do you think that you can approach wildlife more closely in Canada and the States than the UK when there is so much greater hunting pressure and urbanization, encroachment on habitat here?
@MikeLaneFRPS
Жыл бұрын
No idea. Something British photographers talk about, but have no answer.
Smashing video Mike coincidentally I was photographing Teals in Wadebridge Cornwall yesterday. What do you think of the GH6 for stills photography accepting the fact that the bird capturing focus system is not so good? Have a good trip back.
@MikeLaneFRPS
Жыл бұрын
Never use it for stills. Only video. Hopefully the next OM camera catches up on video and I will sell the Gh6. For stills the OM 1 is in a different league, frame rates and focus.
Another great video Mike. Abit of an odd question but where did you get your camping mat from, been looking round for one for a while but can only find foam ones that don’t fold up well? Thanks Ian

@@MikeLaneFRPS Thanks Mike. I'm British not a Canadian but my reference is National Geographic 'Field Guide to the Birds of North America (2nd edition 1996, page 154), but it would be a rarity I think where you were. Seen more in Alaska.
Hello sir, what would be your recommendation for levelling base. I used to have leofoto butterfly style levelling base which honestly was too difficult to loosen and tighten in the field and now I'm thinking of going for bowl style adapter. Your thoughts?

Could you use some kind of spot metering for exposure instead of having to compensate quite often? I guess then the motive have to be centered in the frame?

Not an expert, but could the gull be a juvenile glaucous-winged gull ?
@MikeLaneFRPS
Жыл бұрын
This is the third species suggested and I think the most likely. Thanks
@comeraczy2483
Жыл бұрын
Yes, probably glaucous-winged, from location, black bill, overall body color, and gray tail feathers. Perhaps not because the glaucous-winged often has a lighter head. Other reasonable candidates include herring, short billed, and even western gulls - all these are similar but often expected to have darker tail feathers. Overall too dark to be the much less common Iceland gull. The only certainty is that it is an epic gull-bathing slow-mo sequence!
7:07 - any idea why that is? Is it because NA is more urbanized (or more densly populated) in areas that were traditionally bird habitats and so the birds had to either "adapt or perish" to the presence of humans?
@MikeLaneFRPS
Жыл бұрын
The UK is far more crowded and built up than North America. No idea why the birds arecso tame there.
@TatraScrambler

@@MikeLaneFRPS Yes, that's why I added "in areas that were traditionally bird habitats" because I realize this. It's a cognitive dissonance for me as well.
