Had a friend with a 22-year-old cat with that kind of sass. There is hope.

I used to work at an emergency vet, and whenever we had a picky eater, we'd put water in the kibble and then heat it up in the microwave for 15 seconds (while humming the song we made up about kibble stew, because that seemed to increase the success rate). 99% of the time, they absolutely loved it, but for the other 1%, a spoonful of wet food mixed into the "stew" before microwaving it always did the trick. The food always stunk like roadkill that had been rotting in the August heat for three days, though. Like, glad you're eating, but my nose has swollen shut in protest from how rank that food smells.

I think her repeating the same button is analogous to a person saying 'ummm' 'uhhh'. She reminds me of a couple people I know who'll 'umm' half a dozen times before they get to the end of a sentence :) It's great to see a cat her age still getting so excited. You take good care of her.

I don't really see it that way: she's clearly shown hestitation, by physically pausing/hovering, whereas she often seems to have definite desires/intentions, and if she is motivated and/or not getting the response she desires, she seems quite comfortable emphasizing her requests through deliberate and obstinate repetition.

I cannot get enough of Billi looking up at you when she presses the buttons, knowing she is talking to you and wanting to look at you to see if you understand. Sorry, I know that's not the topic, just she blows my mind. 😁 I would find it very difficult to doubt your ability to care for Billi! At 14 she is lean and healthy and full of energy, her fur is gorgeous and her eyes are unmatched on the Internet! My Lily is a few months younger, she's in good health but does not ask to play energetic games like Billi does. She invents games for us that she can play lying down. Also, I got her a food mousie but she insists it's MY job to make the food come out, not hers. (Maybe she's spoiled)

Thank you so much for contributing your professional opinion about nutrition in the description. I worked at vet clinics as an assistant for about 6 years and diet was one of the biggest points of conflict. I knew patients who switched from kibble/canned food to a homemade/raw diet and their condition improved, but I also knew patients who had conditions worsen on raw diets but improved on kibble. Just like people, every animal has individual needs. Also seconding the call to look into the NOMV movement; there’s a vet staff shortage and high suicide/burnout rates for a reason. Vet care is not a well paid industry, despite what people think, and it’s also incredibly demanding physically, emotionally and spiritually. A lot of people I used to work with have burned out and had to leave it, myself included. I miss many aspects of clinic life, but the mental strain wasn’t worth the crap pay/benefits and terrible treatment from clients and management. It was bad before the pandemic, but the pandemic made it so much worse.

@@BilliSpeaks I used to try mixing it with a dehydrated mix like I think the "water food" is here, and my cat would never touch it or the freeze dried mussel mixes for their joints either. A little TOO fishy. Edit: just read the description, so water food is kibble with hot water added, which is a great option, some people do raw goats milk or low sodium chicken broth or similar options too. For reference the dehydrated food I used to try was The Honest Kitchen which is... Good quality but low variety, and sometimes they just would not eat it. Good luck to all out there attempting to find the right food for their pet!

needless seringe oraly since they are babies 3mo+ for a year or so. I did it to mine in the 90s , mixed with calciferol (baby calcium) by vet's advice. My 😺 lived a long healthy life.

I have capsules with the liquid in them and I just break them open, and my cats LOVE it. They won't eat hardly any kind of meat, but they will eat the heck out of the fish oil.

I love how Billi waits for the middle of Mom pressing "Billi want look outside hmm?" to say "Billi want - Billi interrupts with "Bird" - as in "Billi wants bird" - making Mom do all the hard work pressing buttons! such a smartie!!

You are absolutely correct. Dry food or ANY food someone recommends without knowing the medical condition of each cat is frustrating. And downright rude IMO. My cat had Feline Idiopathic Ulcerative Dermatitis, very rare and non responsive. He also had tummy issues and vomited daily. We tried EVERY food on the market and even homemade food, nothing worked. After thousands of dollars spent, we finally found a dry food that did not cause recurrence of his ulcers (after resection) and his vomiting reduced. Of course I would have loved a wet food to increase his water content, but vomiting daily loses more water than any wet food. When I took my cat to the vet, I was shocked to be scolded a few times by other patients who didn't know me...for buying dry food. *Sigh* At this stage in Billi's life, you know her best and I am positive you have her on the perfect regiment for her body.

Billi needs poultry now in the form of water food! She has found a new love, and you will have no peace until she eats it often enough to get tired of it. She was very patient and didn't "mad" you, so there's hope for peace in the future.

Loved the detailed description you wrote up. You're a good mom.

I get a lot of tummy ouch too from lactose intolerance and IBS. 😭 Sometimes I don't care but most of the time I have to drink a lot of water and pretend I'm eating food that I actually want to eat. 😂

Same here, although nowadays there are some good alternative products. Some nice desserts with coconut milk, or yoghurt with lactase already in it (altho my tummy didn't always feel to happy afterwards I felt like). A few weeks ago I found out that I can tolerate Greek Yoghurt without any problem, very happy about that. It's definitely interesting to look into the amount of lactose per product as they can vary quite a bit. Luckily most cheeses don't have any or only little lactose in there, one thing I cannot do without!

I was in denial of lactose intolerance for 20 years because cheese is too damned delicious. Also yogurt, i miss yogurt. Now I eat one dairy thing once a week and have a broad probiotic supplement with it (helps keep the symptoms mild). It seems like a reasonable compromise for now.

Ah, yes. 'Food water' or as it's called in my home: Kibble soup. My cats love that. I mostly give it to them on hot days, times when they need to drink more and/or when there's some old dry food leftover in a bowl I know they won't eat because it is no longer 'fresh' enough. Generally I just use room temperature water, but if I really want to entice them to drink I use warm/lukewarm water since the heat enhances the fragrance and makes it 'taste' better.

I've been fostering kittens, feeding them canned kitten food (probably a financial mistake considering how long I'm ending up having them due to all the rescues being full during kitten season!), and when a can is empty I swish it out with a squirt of hot water and put it on my own cat's kibble, and he LOVES it! I have always mixed a little canned food with his kibble for 2 or 3 meals a week (he knows what "Mommy's making it good" means), so I thought he might be disappointed with a little flavored water in comparison, but he gobbles it right up. On a somewhat related note, does anybody want a kitten? I've got 3... a smartie, a beauty, and a sweetie... the first two are torties/torbies (so female), the last one an all black male. I swear the smartie would be a good candidate to learn the buttons, and maybe the beauty too. I'm in central Pennsylvania. I posted a longer description a couple vids back.

I have certainly been where you are. From March 2020-November 2021 we were cat parents to a 19 year old with advanced CKD, and while she LOVED to drink water, she HATED all forms of prescription food, and she likely had untreated IDB/pancreatitis before she came to us as she couldn't stomach any kind of wet food. So we gave her what she would eat. Yes, that means a lot of junk, but at 19/20, we decided keeping her weight up would be most important for quality of life. Oh, and she liked fish but would throw up fish oil :/

My late Soren had borderline numbers for a bit. He liked the prescription dry food but wouldn't eat the wet, and I wanted him getting more hydration (though he was always a great drinker). I was able to find a low phosphorous food almost as good as the prescription stuff that he loved. Thankfully at his next checkup, his numbers were in normal range. He passed about a year and a half later, but from CHF.

Kendra, it's a shame you felt you had to take pre-emptive measures to ward off dietary criticism, but I'm glad you took the time to type out all that info, because people need to hear it from a qualified vet they already respect. Also, a little while back you mentioned not falling for the grain-free (ha, my autocorrect tried to make that brain-free!) diet craze, as it's just marketing hype. My own vet had said the exact same thing to me the day before that! I meant to tell you that at the time, but I don't think I ever posted.

Happens in human medicine, too. I remember a newish doctor being all excited about this wonderful "new" stomach med, probably after a visit from a drug rep. I pointed out to her that it was merely a combination of 2 stomach pills that had been on the market for years.

My cat's vet is amazing and supportive... Earlier this year we ran into issues getting my cat to eat enough food because she was insisting on begging for more wet food rather than eating her kibble. (She was getting a small amount of wet food as dictated by the vet at the time to help with a health issue.) I had to stop ALL wet food in order to coerce my cat into eating her kibble again. As the vet put it, "Cats are the only animal I know that will starve themselves with a bowl full of food. They're so picky!" We eventually got that health issue managed, and now we're working on overall health management with an emphasis on kidneys, but I still can't feed her wet food except as a rare treat without her going back to starve-and-beg mode. Cats are complicated and picky! Your best intentions don't matter so much if your cat has different ideas about their diet than you do. :P It's just extra hard for us when we have to manage their other health issues for them on TOP of making sure they're eating and hydrating properly.

The stare of enlightenment in that cat's eyes is like no other...

I truly appreciate all the information you gave in the description box... and addressing those 3 comments.😻 I hope you can find some type of food that agrees with Billi's tummy. My cat has tried over 25 wet/canned food and will not eat any of it. At least she likes her 1 kind of hard crunchies.

@@annother3350, very glad for your friend! One solution so often doesn't suit all the cats in the family. I'm currently feeding two who can't be allowed access to each others' food - not only would the one who needs it not get the right amount of their own food, the other cat would get sick and vomit. Any biologist can tell you - it's never as simple as it looks at first...no matter what "it" is.

If you found a dry kibble that works, that is great. Glad Billie enjoys her water food.

Hot water on dry food has been a thing for dogs since forever, I’m a little surprised that it’s relatively unheard of for cats.

We used to have to water-food our elderly cats bird-food, and then put it into the blender and blend it within an inch of its life. Even the pate style straight from the can was just too lumpy for her to cope with once she got ill, so textureless moosh it was. We never had to give her fish oils, thank god, she hated fish and would hiss at it.

Billi: I said Bird mom!! Pay attention or I’ll keep pushing Bird! Billi proceeds to press Bird 12 times 😂

Personally, I think that nutritionally balanced commercial cat food and good veterinary care are the main reasons cats can live to be 20 years old now. Fifty years ago the average lifespan for a cat was ~7 years.

Billi sure loves her birds.

I tried to feed my aunt's elderly cat the dry food he got for lunch mixed with warm water into a mash when he had a tooth come loose and he just looked at me like 'Why would you ruin my food like that?' and walked away. I didn't try that again even though it was like 2 more days before I could get him to a vet to get it pulled lol

You clearly care for Billi so much, and you're doing everything you can to look after her health and wellbeing. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

I used the hot water/dry food combo a few times a week. Sometimes as a treat, sometimes as a bribe to keep the boy out from under foot while cleaning. If I said "gravy" he would come running quicker than when he heard the catnip container opening.

It's almost scary how much information you and your little cat exchange with these buttons. It's like watching someone talking with their 2 year old, and I really love the dynamic you two have together. Also, seeing this makes me think about the clear implication that other animals probably also have an equally rich and complex mental capacity as what Billi is demonstrating here. This really makes me wish our society would start to think more about how we treat the animals all around us if it's so easy to see how far from "dumb beasts" they really are.

I think dumb was used to mean speechless, not stupid; as the phrase deaf and dumb referred to someone who couldn't hear, therefore couldn't learn to speak (before speech therapy was a thing).

@@akinpaws I suppose the word does double duty here in the sense that these animals clearly have an intellect (i.e. they clearly aren't stupid) and with these buttons to push they can now communicate with words (i.e. no longer unable to "speak"). With either version of the definition we might pick, I think it's fair to say as our understanding of the complexities of our animal friends expands, so too does our awareness of how truly amazing this world really is.

The cat gods are so kind and patient for the mere humans who are slow in understanding and slow in serving.

At first I thought Billi ate Bird Food like bird feed outside.. but then I read the description and realized it meant "bird food" like 'chicken', and in general her way of saying wet food. Billi being an older lady, she has plenty of ouch now, and I think you're such a great role model for being so diligent to care for Billi through all the very complex issues. Despite it seeming to others (and Billi too 🤣) as simple as just giving over what she wants to eat, It's never actually that simple. And you're giving Billi every day the service and care honestly on par for an actual queen. 😺👑

Yeah, I've never understood what in that food smells appealing to cats, but... they like it, and that's the important thing.

I always thought a good dry food(not meow mix) was better than wet so IDK. I don't care what you feed Billie. She's YOUR cat and YOU know what's best for her. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I personally see a high quality dry food as better than a cheap wet food. My orange boy agrees and will not touch the cheap wet food. (He gets a middle quality wet food as a treat). My rule of thumb…by the best food you can afford, fits your life and your cat will eat. Wet, dry, raw, freeze dried makes no difference.

No, wet food is better. Cats often pass from kidney disease in old age and that is frequently because of the dry kibble diet they have had for so many years. They tend not to drink enough water to make up for the lack of moisture in their food. Kibble is okay but it's best to only to supplement with it or free feed between wet food meals.

I just looked up LOMV. I think it’s wonderful to have a support group that truly understands the roller coaster of emotions that would obviously come with that job.

My heart melted - so much excitement for water food that she kept making mistakes! Never seen her make so many mistakes before, especially for food!! Seems most of her mistakes seemed to come from playing and she'd actually note that it was an oops, here she's too excited to even say 'oops'!

Aww she's so excited! We used to do that for our cat when she had tummy troubles, adding water to her food. She'd get so excited, and we were happy because it was something she was able to eat!

My cat Willow was enthralled with this video. I like to think that the wheels were turning and he was thinking about how to better control humans.

I just read the description and I am appalled by people’s lack of self control! What gives them the right to be mean? It is obvious that you love your cat! As a person with chronic illness, I feel for you and your fur baby! Just ignore the haters and remember that most of your viewers know you are doing what is best for YOUR kitty! Oh dw about all this nonsense ignorant people spew out no one knows bills needs as well as you and her dad can! Watching you interact with billi always puts a big smile on my face :)the level of understanding and love you and Billi share is totally inspiring to me I want to make one of these talking devices for my kitten Kurobei he's Burmese x Ragdoll and so clever already (he's only 4months) and although we already have great communication I think starting to teach him young about words could be very rewarding for both of us thanks for the awesome content!😊

I feel your pain with the diet situation and it’s 100% nuanced especially when facing chronic disease and/or a finicky eater. Most people don’t know that cats will stop eating when given food they don’t like and deprive themselves into a dangerous situation. Mine ended up in the ER with fatty liver from not eating enough; it’s a life threatening condition. It took us 6 months of liver enzymes and B12 shots to get him back to normal so I learned (the hard way) how to listen to my gut, my cat, my vet. Billi’s mama knows best.

How funny! My cat had to have her dry food watered down after getting her tooth pulled and she acted like it was some God sent food all of a sudden. She got to a point of begging for it and the whole time I would be "making it" waiting for the food to actually soak up the hot water and cool down she would be freaking out too. 😂 Also love your video description, so spot on as far as what should be said and now I'm curious as to the not one more vet movement 😆 You are one of the best cat moms I've ever seen 💯 and I hope you still always post food videos because they are fun.

Billi is already 14! Please get a kitten for Billi to train before we loose her. I can still see the impacts of cats teaching cats 3 generations down in our house hold. It is so satisfying knowing that Bruce taught Saki and I can see Saki teaching those same lessons to Daisy. Please give Billi a student.

I love your videos, and ones like this are what made me get a test button kit for my two cats. They communicate with me, but I can't wait to give them more options to be more specific with me. That all being said, I keep thinking of the "rage" video of Billi camping out on the mad button and wondering if I really want to know what my oldest cat is thinking. 🤣 Thank you for sharing!

This is the most excited I think I've ever seen Billi she was hounding for that water food also I've fed all my pets dry food. to only have a wet food diet would bankrupt us where we live. on occasion I will give treats or water down food. my cat Jinx has CKD and reading that the specific food we're giving him (dry pellets recommended by vet) has been scientifically proven (many studies, backgrounds to read) to increase his lifespan is all the proof I need. Nutrition IS complicated!

I can not thank you enough for mentioning NOMV. While my daughter is not a vet, she’s a LVT who loves her job but it takes its toll in her mentally and physically as well. She suffers from Lupus and Epilepsy which is impacted by the stress of her job, Sometimes requiring an ambulance ride to the hospital, yet there isn’t anything else she’d rather be doing. We’ve discussed the stresses of her job often, and how at Some point it will be too much. I see how it affects her mentally as well, and as her mom I worry about her. So it’s not just veterinarians who suffer, it’s their staff as well. We as clients need to be more mindful when interacting with them, especially when they’ve had an already long day. It’s the people that often make the job difficult by being demanding and insensitive to others. If we go into our vets office realizing that emergencies happen So we may have to wait, or there might not be an appointment available that week, or maybe realizing that we don’t know everything… everyone would be better off. They’re there for your pets first and foremost, so please don’t get offended when they prioritize them first. Our animals need each and every one of them!

Bless her...its so difficult to find a food they will eat that doesn't cause issues. I had a diabetic cat once who had to be taken off dry food..my vet and I worked together ( well, some head butting) and found a food he tolerated.. i wished then I could just throw him a bird or mouse ( natural prey) but imagine the screams from "people" then...

You do you! And we all know you know what is best for Billie. KZread can be a magnet for cruel and stupid people... And I'm sorry if they came your way. We all see how happy and content this smart kitty is. I'm glad it is working out for Billie just by putting hot water into the dry food.

Oh no. I am warning you - do not create a singing cat, unless you are willing to accommodate the cat's musical tastes and needs. I had one that figured out how to use the remote control to turn on the TV, because the default cable channel (which listed programming) played music you could dance to. He would turn on the music by himself. He would also leap from the floor into your arms and place his paws around your neck, so you could dance with him. (And yes, he would watch gymnastics and ballroom dancing on the TV.)
