Birchwood to Bluff - Te Araroa (Part 22)

My 3000km walk along the length of New Zealand continues. This video covers the final five day section of the Te Araroa trail from Birchwood to Bluff, through Southland. From Birchwood, I follow the Woodlaw Track over farmland and pine forest, before emerging at Scotts Gap. From here, I follow roads for about 10km to the start of the Longwood Forest Track - the final forest on Te Araroa. This forest was one of the worst sections of the trail, with endless, knee deep mud for two days! I stay at Martin's Historic Hut in the forest - not the nicest hut, but a good break from the mud! The next day, I walk out of the Longwood Forest to Round Hill Road and then on to the village of Colac Bay, where I see the sea for the first time in months. After a very slow beach walk at high tide, I cross over the final hill and enter Riverton, where I spend the night at the holiday park. The next day, I follow Oreti Beach for around 22km into Invercargill, where I stay at the holiday park. The final day of the trail, I complete the last 35km from Invercargill to Bluff - a very boring road walk to start off with, but then a pretty epic ending!
This channel is dedicated to my walk on the 3000km Te Araroa Trail, sharing my experiences and trying to raise the funds I will need to achieve this. Any financial help through Buy me a Coffee (www.buymeacoffee.com/onthetra...) would be greatly appreciated, but even a simple video like or channel subscribe will help. Thank you and enjoy!

Jared, do you have a clip about your hiking kit for Te Araroa and what food you recommend? @@onthetrailnz

Hi, no I keep meaning to make a video about my gear, but can't seem to find the time! In terms of food, most of the way I ate heat and eat curries (just from the supermarket) and rice, and for the longer South Island sections I took Local Dehy dehydrated food (I am vegetarian).

Congratulations Jared. Something of a pity that the last part of the track is a mud wallow, but you were excited anyway and you got some great views when you were out of the plantations. We weren't far away from your route a couple of weeks earlier - we stayed at the same camp in Riverton, travelled some of the same roads in more comfort in our campervan, and went through Tuatapere. It is a beautiful part of the country. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. Cousin John.

Well done! Woodlaw track - the steepest on Te Araroa? Look forward to your best-of and worst-of videos. For me Breast Hill and Waiau Pass were the best and the Longwoods wins the worst by a long shot! Well done again!

Thanks for watching! Yes the Woodlaw Track was definitely steep - it doesn't look like it in the video. It sounds like we've had a similar experience - Breast Hill and Waiau Pass were highlights for me as well and I don't even know how the Longwoods can be called a trail!
