Bipolar and Electroconvulsive Treatment ECT

Спорт

I've been depressed the last week or so, and I didn't feel like my meds were helping. So my Dr.'s and I decided to give ECT therapy a try. In this episode, I just wanted to ask for tips or advice for going through it. If you have any tips or advice, please leave a comment or send me an email.

you should research TCS because when you say it sounds intensive I think you're misunderstanding your Dr a bit, they're talking about something a lot milder compared to ECT and AFAIK doesn't have the side effects. TCS is a new therapy, like less than 5 years old. What they do is apply a small targeted electrical current to your head, so it passes through part of the brain. It's really almost just sticking a battery to your head, but a bit more scientific. They don't know why this or ECT works, the whole idea is mostly trial and error. But this has been getting attention for treating all kinds of things and even improving normal brains. I don't know if anything has come of it but DARPA was funding research that preliminarily showed that pilots in training learn to fly quicker and better when they have TCS (or TCMS?) during or after training. And since it's low current it isn't really painful, you don't need anesthesia, people say it feels like a fast tapping finger and a buzzing sound. So I'm guessing the 'intense' part described to you is the treatment schedule which is supposedly a lot of treatments over a short time and time consuming. But the visits themselves are less intense because you just sit down and feel your head buzz for a while, I think you can do stuff during too. Not sure though. Just felt I had to say something because you don't sound like you've done a lot of research and for something like this you should. Of course I'm not a Dr, I didn't even research this but I've heard talk of it around. Also, applying "targeted" electrical current is relative here because it's still kind of like using a machete for surgery, but in that comparison ECT is a chain saw - much higher current and not really targeted. But it also has a longer history so the side effects and everything are more known. There are also other new therapies, ketamine therapy for example is supposedly getting popular. Either way, it's interesting to see people's experiences so thanks for sharing, good luck!

Hey, thank you for all that info! That's super helpful and I really appreciate it. What I meant by intensive is that with TMS, you have to go 5 days a week for like a 6-week program. I'm a full time student with a ton of responsibilities that just consume too much time for me to be able to commit to it. The reason I chose ECT over TMS was time. I am starting to re-think it, but out of my options it seems like this is the best option. My biggest concern is the memory loss aspect. I already don't have the best memory, so it concerns me. Thank you again for your info, and I'll be doing more research and talking to my Dr again.

@@Bipolar_Thoughts yep that is very intense and disruptive to pull off. I'm sure there's stories around of people telling how it goes, like on reddit. Maybe it's possible to study while doing them Also have to consider insurance, they tend to be incredibly stupid and they might charge the same for each TCS treatment as one ECT which could become a big factor. Sucks to think that cost over best action might be the deciding factor but realistically that's US healthcare.

So an update for you, I decided to do away with the ECT and switched to the TMS treatments. I actually start today, which means I'm preparing for the next few days of me possibly being in a manic state. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for your information and give you an update. Wish me luck!
