Biosimilars | What is a Biosimilar? | Gastrointestinal Society

Innovator biologics are very specific, highly effective medicines that improve health outcomes in many complex conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis, psoriasis, HIV, multiple sclerosis, growth deficiencies, and more. Biosimilars are products that are similar to an innovator biologic, but not identical.

yes, a biosimilar is almost the same as the innovator, molecularly speaking. The most common organism used for producing these molecules are mammalian cells such as CHO. "Chinese Hamster Ovary" Cells and HEK "Human Embryonic Kidney" Cells. this is because these cells can add PTM "Post-Tranlational Modification " Very similar to human.

They are occuring for purely finical reasons. Insurance companies are unethically forcing people off the innovator durg with disastrous results.
